I chose a fish dish, which came with two or three large pieces of fish, fried without a coating. I asked for the least spicy sauce, but it was still way too spicy for my tastes! It came with a huge portion of sticky rice. I love that kind of rice, but am unable to eat much due to carbs. My husband got a combo plate that had a nice variety of meat around the huge mound of rice in the middle. His came with a very spicy sauce too, but the main curry sauce was nice and mild. The restaurant itself is small and old. The workers were very busy, but also pleasant and friendly. It was a new, fun experience for us.

We found this place on yelp. We walked all the way from Surry Hills to Chinatown. We were deciding…read morebetween this place and Ho Jiak and decided to try here cause the menu looks more authentic. I wanted to bring my fiancé to taste more authentic Indonesian food. We got a lot of dishes to try. Our favorites are Pempek, Bakso, Mie Ayam Jamur, and Es Campur with Durian. The Pempek tastes really good. The fish cake, sauce, cucumber, and everything else remind me of how it tastes when I had it in Indonesia. Bakso comes with vermicelli and pangsit goreng. Too bad there's no Indonesian sweet soy sauce and chili condiments. They will compliment very well if mixed with the broth. The beef meatballs and pangsit goreng are good. Mie Ayam Jamur is good all around. Siomay Bandung is disappointing. Don't order this! The siomay itself is very bland. It tastes like an over-steamed bland tofu with a glob of filling in it. The only flavor we could taste was the peanut sauce. Last but not least is the Es Campur with Durian. Good amount of durian on the top and variations of jelly and nata de coco at the bottom. Great dessert. Give this place a try, but don't sit near the wall because a lady at the next table saw a small roach on the wall seat and freaked out. I sat on the wall seat too, so I quickly grabbed a piece of tissue and killed it with no hesitation. Don't know why I did that. Usually I am the one who is scared of bugs lol

I have yet another amazing Indonesian cuisine experience to share…read more Jimbaran is a reasonably high end Indonesian restaurant in Randwick, their main meal prices range from around $15 to $30, so you can spend a little or a lot. My dish of choice was from the $15 end of the spectrum, choosing the Ayam Bakar Anugrah, which is a grilled chicken dish. I am glad I did not spend $30 as what I was served for $15 was spectacular. It was half a chook, slow cooked in palm sugar and served in peanut sauce. Meals like this are so good to have in a restaurant, because it would be so difficult to cook a dish like that yourself and to cook it well is another story, so to pay for someone to cook it for you is a pleasure. And a pleasure it was.

After reading the reviews on Yelp I tried out this restaurant…read more Firstly the lighting is too bright inside the restaurant. Mood is all important and creates intimacy. I sat down but it didn't reflect that cozy atmosphere that is advertised on the restaurant website. Where was the soft music and candles? Turn down the lights and bring out your candles for a perfect ambiance like at Jimbaran Bali! The food here is wonderful in taste and is cooked to perfection. As mentioned in other reviews, it is in the moderate to high price range for such Indonesian dishes. Worth it? Yes for the taste but in some cases no for the portion size. For entree I ate Sate Ayam or Chicken Satay ($13.90). This Indonesian style Sate served to your table on a hot charcoal grill with side accompaniment of peanut sauce and pickled cucumber. A lovely presentation of an old favourite and so tasty. For mains, I ordered the Padang Chicken ($18.90) which was a good meal portion. It was half a chicken cooked slowly in coconut milk with mixed spices & herbs. The taste reminded me of a thicker version of "Opor Ayam" served in this case with a padang style curry sauce. I also ordered a dish synonymous with Indonesia - Beef Rendang. This traditional beef curry was slowly cooked in coconut milk with chilli and fine lime leaves until a thick mild curry was formed. The taste was towards perfection! I loved this dish but was disappointed with the portion size. There were only five small beef portions in a dish of Rendang sauce (see photo). Not good value for $17.90 but after all the taste was the highlight! The staff were attentive and very polite and I couldn't fault the place except for lighting and portion size. If management did this, your restaurant would be full. Three stars on this occasion.
