Bay of Bengal, as the name suggests, specialises in Indian and Bangladeshi cuisine which you can…read moreenjoy in the comfort of their restaurant or, if you so wish, in the comfort of your own home as they offer a takeaway menu as well as a restaurant menu. The choice of dishes is pretty large and varied, with the menu including a useful selection of chef's recommended dishes which are especially tasty, spicy and full of flavour. The dishes themselves are nothing particularly different from a normal Indian restaurant menu, but it is all made to a fairly high quality and can be enjoyed in a restaurant which is nicely decorated and set out. The staff are attentive and knowledgeable, helping you to choose a dish to suit your palate (as well as warning you off any very spicy dishes) and ensuring you to have a lovely dining experience whilst in their company. A very pleasant place to go if you fancy an Indian meal in a restaurant environment.

The interior is nothing exceptional, standard 'curry house' kind of theme but its clean and inviting. The staff received me warmly and were pleasant and polite throughout. I had chicken Madras with plain rice, Garlic Naan and Poppadoms. The food was beautiful, the Madrass was just how I like it, just hot enough and not enough to enduce dehydration! the Naan was fresh and flavourful and was a great accompanyment. With a couple of Cokes the bill came to around £15, which I think was pretty reasonable.

RIght, at the risk of being pedantic , again!!! ( I have been known to usher a word or two on this…read moresubject in my previous reviews) I must make you all aware this isn't an Indian restaurant but a Bangladeshi one. Yes, I know I get worked up about these little details but the devil is in the detail people!!!! Having put this littel fact to bed let us swiftly move onto the review. It does strike me as a makeshift restaurant with a design fault, isn't the waiting area supposed to be near the front? Isn't that why its called "front house"? Here the waiting area is actually at the back of the restaurant..hmmm !!?? The decor was also slightly strange. It was very modern and contemporary but had the feel of a corporate airport lounge rather than an "Indian" restaurant. It was a slightly surreal experience. But hey what the hell as I always say it is always about teh grub is it not. I loved the food. I just wish it was a thursday or a sunday because it would have cost me a tenner to eat as much of it as I could. Damn!!!! I do however believe it is a con, this, "all you can eat" buffet business. Fact is you can only eat so much at any given time, and it is a clever way for restaurents to cover average per head margins. In any case the food is priced well enough here all the same. You would probably pay marginally more than that on any other day. The food did carry that little bit extra umph which allowed me to bump it upto 4*s. Definitely a good addition to the Wirral dining scene me thinks, give it whirl I say why don't ya!!

My general understanding of the word 'Bengal' is that it is a region in India as well as a type of…read moretiger. Now I'm pretty sure this place doesn't specialise in grilled tiger, so I think it's safe to say their name is a nod to its Indian roots and that there is no need to get on the phone to the RSPCA just yet. Spice of Bengal in Ainsdale specialises in Indian and Bangladeshi dishes available either in a restaurant setting or to order and take away. Their takeaway menu is a bit sparse compared to the restaurant menu which is to be expected, but their eat-in menu is impressively extensive. Helpfully, there is also a section which breaks down what each type of curry contains and how spicy each one is, for all the curry virgins and n00bs amongst you. When I last visited I went for the lamb tikka chilli Bengal curry which, as you can imagine, was rather spicy. Despite how hot it was, it was still delicious as it managed to negotiate the fine line between being too mild and so hot it takes off several layers of your tongue. The restaurant is fairly pleasantly decorated and has a lovely dining atmosphere, with the staff being friendly and attentive at all times. If you're ever in the area, I recommend trying the Spice on offer here.

I remembered that our hosts at Tan Dinas Country House in Betws-y-Coed recommended Ty Balti House, so we headed there. Llanrwst is a working town and interesting to us because of our interest in Wales and the Welsh. The town is quite different from Betws-y-Coed, very tourist-oriented, but Llanrewst is interesting in it's own way. Somehow Llanwrst lucked out over Betws and has a fantastic Indian restaurant featuring Balti-style (Bangladeshi) cooking. Their focus is their tandoori oven and meat dishes, including lamb. We're fishaterians though but we found plenty to eat there too. We had tandoori salmon, mattar paneer, dhal and rice. Asha Balti has a full bar. A G&T was never more welcome. The food was excellent (really, not just because we were hungry!), the staff was friendly and helpful. Dinner was one of our best meals during our two week trip to Wales. It's only a few miles to the restaurant from Betws-y-Coed, so head to Llanwrst if you're in the mood for some great Indian food.
