I've been to the store at Macquarie Centre a…read morecouple of times, and have bought a number of items from a top to a bikini to thongs, but wasn't that impressed with the selection - there wasn't that much that grabbed my attention, plus it's such a cramped shop. That's completely different at the Pitt St Mall shop, with all of the huge ground floor plus much of the second floor being devoted to women's clothing alone, with easily twice of the floor space at Macquarie. The aisles are also wider, there's so many more eye-catching displays, and so much was so tempting to try on. Or not try on, given the huge queues for the change rooms (just like at Macquarie Centre) - it's probably easy to take it home and try on in comfort, then return (within 30 days) if you don't like it (well, I'm sure that's what the receipt mentioned). I made it as far as the Home section, where there were lots of great cushions, knick-knacks and summery bags. Most of it was organised by theme rather than item (so the cushions were scattered around), making it difficult to just look at cushions, say, but easy to see what goes together. I didn't make it as far as the top floor with men's and children's wear. Tip: Rather than queuing for the register at the ground floor, try those in the Home section for no queue.

First thing I stumbled upon was an 'educational doll' - a kids doll with sexual organs. Fair enough. I understood the premise, not necessarily their marketing strategy. I continued on to flick through the rack of girls clothes (sizes 000 - 3). Finding a cute jacket, I checked the tag for the 'certified organic' stamp. This I did not find. But I did find a $399 pricetag. On a jacket fit for a 6 month old baby. Burberry. Of course I bought it* - who can turn down a bargain like that? * I did not buy the jacket.

Whatever may be the reason, I found myself in Efrem Kids the other day and decided to indulge in having a browse. This Austrailan-based kids clothing store claims to "sell and promote exclusive designer products to the fortunate and promote charitable work to the less fortunate." I'm not entirely sure what they mean by this, but I DO know that they have cute ass baby clothes. Who doesn't want their arm candy, ehem, 1 year-old to look like a little rockstar? With honey-I-shrunk-the-hipster wardrobe, you will have people oogling over your kid all day long. And although you'll pay for it, isn't that what you had kids for in the first place? Ok, maybe not, but I do see how it makes it more fun.

Thankfully, things have quietened down, and these days you can (mostly) wander around the store without being cheek-by-jowl with other shoppers. But what of the stock? Well, it was never going to live up to the hype, nor its overseas siblings (as anyone who has visited one will assure you), but there's still plenty to like about our Zara. The range goes from classic to totally frivolous and moreover, it's seemingly fast-changing, which makes it worth popping in to see if anything takes your fancy. And now the insane crowds have abated, I'll definitely be stopping by to say Hola to Zara.
