The computer said they had seven in store. I looked in the usual places and then, I found a table of paperback classics. Not there. The woman running the registers calls someone for me to help me out. And boy! Does she help. She goes to where she thought it would be. Not there. She uses the computer so she can see what I had seen and takes me to a little table of hardback classics and there it was. It probably took 10-15 minutes to track down a copy but not once did she act like it was a waste of time. When I went to pay, the woman at register even asked if we were able to find the book. I've been to this location loads of times, and never had a bad experience, but yesterday's experience was just deserving of a review!

Unfortunately, this was on the weekend. This Coles bookstore is closed on Saturdays and Sundays. I've not heard of retail stores that were closed on weekends! Honestly, that's really inconvenient for a lot of people! And it closes at 5pm on weekdays, FYI. Anyhow, I ventured back again during the week and I was very impressed with this store (despite its abbreviated hours of operation). The selection of books was quite good (considering the store itself is not large), and there are some good prices to be had (especially on classics. They were offering three classic literature books for $10 when I was there). Most impressive was the staff: there was an engaging lady and a man working when I visited and both couldn't have been more pleasant or helpful. I could have chatted with them much longer, about books and Vancouver and the States (we just moved here from Seattle) and more, but I arrived at the store at 4:30pm and, well, there wasn't much time before they closed for browsing and lengthy chatting. But they were super nice and very knowledgeable about new publications and where I could find certain books in print and recommendations for me to find Stanley Park trail maps, etc. I also liked how they have a reward program and card, as I am a book junkie and plan on doing lots of business here and at Indigo.

I asked about trade in value and he sneered again and said he could "get rid of them for me" as if they were trash. A truly miserable resentful goblin I encountered - I will never go there again. I asked them the question if they had any signed books, and they had several, most that were local authors! It was my first time inside, having only passed by before to casually gloss over their outdoor book selection. Not long after I stepped in, I heard staff graciously welcome a new member to the team and it set a pleasant tone to my visit. I was on the search for a mystery novel and gravitated toward the ones with paper signs indicating a staff member's recommendation. The notes were handwritten and personalized, providing short summaries and/or reasons for why said book was recommended. As someone who can be incredibly indecisive, this helped a lot and eventually led me to my purchase: "The Plot" by Jean Hanff Korelitz. As I made my purchase, I was asked whether I wanted a stamp card so that I could get $5 off and be entered into a giveaway upon 10 purchases. I was also offered their store bookmark, which came in handy for reading afterwards at a nearby coffee shop. The staff member was so friendly and capped off what would be the first of more visits. If you want to support local businesses and are on the hunt for a good read, I highly recommend checking out Book Warehouse!
