am writing to formally report serious misconduct by staff at the IU Kelley School of Business Alumni Association that I believe constitutes retaliation, unauthorized surveillance, and a potential violation of my rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act. I am a graduate of the IU Kelley School of Business living with a traumatic brain injury. Over the past several months I have made repeated, good-faith attempts to access basic alumni networking resources. My requests went entirely unanswered by Mr. Melvin, the head of the Kelley Alumni Association. When I took the step of notifying Kelley faculty of my concerns regarding how the alumni association is being operated, Mr. Melvin responded not with assistance, but with a threatening letter. Within that letter, Mr. Melvin explicitly stated that Mr. Eric Rodkin, Safety & Security Specialist at Hodge Hall, had been assigned to monitor and inspect all of my emails. I have a copy of this letter and am prepared to provide it as evidence. I must be direct: this is not a minor administrative failure. This is retaliation. A university alumni director used a physical security employee to conduct surveillance of a disabled alumnus's private communications -- solely because that alumnus raised legitimate concerns about the performance of a publicly funded university department. This conduct is deeply troubling and I believe it raises the following serious concerns: 1. RETALIATION - I was threatened and placed under surveillance in direct response to exercising my right to voice concerns about a publicly funded university department 2. UNAUTHORIZED SURVEILLANCE - Mr. Rodkin's role is limited to physical building security at Kelley. He has no legitimate authority to monitor the private email communications of alumni 3. ADA VIOLATION - As a person with a traumatic brain injury, using intimidation and surveillance to discourage me from accessing alumni services may constitute discrimination under the Americans with Disabilities Act 4. ABUSE OF POSITION - Mr. Melvin's use of a security employee to threaten and monitor an alumnus is a serious misuse of university resources and authority Mr. Melvin's Email Joshua, We are in receipt of your recent messages directed toward our faculty and staff. We have tried to address your issue multiple times and have clearly communicated that you will need to work directly with LinkedIn to resolve the problem. You still have access to the alumni group on LinkedIn. The tone and content of your most recent communications are unacceptable and have exceeded the boundaries of constructive dialogue and a professional code of conduct. This email serves as a formal request for you to cease sending any messages to members of my team, faculty, and staff regarding this issue. We are committed to maintaining a safe and respectful professional environment, and we do not tolerate communication that compromises the well-being of our faculty and staff. Please be advised that our Safety and Security Specialist has been looped into this correspondence and is now monitoring all incoming communications from your accounts. We will be forced to escalate this matter to the appropriate university officials and, if necessary, law enforcement, if you continue to disparage our team members. This review is regarding the East Asian Studies department. Starting with the good, I experienced a very well thought out training on sijo poetry that culminated in a lesson plan that I can use for work. Expectations were made clear up front, which is one of the most important things when teaching or training. It included multiple presentations from multiple speakers. I was quite impressed with all the work and expertise that went into it! It was fun and enjoyable with contests and gave me plenty of ideas on how to teach it. It was held on a weekend so that it was convenient to those with normal work schedules. It was hybrid, so that was convenient as well, with extra activities for those who were live. As a Korean, I really took a great interest in the topic, and thought it would provide me with an authentic lesson plan where students could learn this from a Korean. I had a Korean at the time who looked up to me since we shared the same heritage, and I also wanted to bring this to those who would not have had the opportunity to learn about it. However, I had a very different experience with a different offering. I was told that I had to buy a book and read one chapter each week. Another chapter would be read in a book club. But when I woke up early on a Saturday, got dressed, and logged into my email account there was no Zoom link or phone number in my inbox or Canvas. I emailed (there was no phone number provided), contacted all of their social media outlets, and contacted their IT department. LinkedIn was the one to respond, and gave me the link way after the meeting had passed. I was sent a crazy long list of things to read that was never conveyed to me in the syllabus, and my schedule is always booked with mandatory trainings and things for my marriage. I don't have four hours to watch two movies AND18 hours to listen to the rest of the curriculum I already missed, all in one week's time. Then I was marked down. I think it's very unfair to be marked with 3/10 points when I did everything I was told was expected of me: scheduled every single thing into my calendar, listened to the smutty 1st chapter in front of my mom of all things, and woke up early on a Saturday. Then IT gave me different contact info. This was a very bad experience, and I don't have time for something that will never help my career. This is not even a fun book club. If they have a course, the name of the teacher and how to contact said teacher should always be conveyed instead of making it look like the teacher is someone else. It should also match the information in the system. read more

I went for a master's in environmental science and policy from 2014 to 2016. I was treated very unfairly as a student in more than one class doing no wrong, and in hindsight don't believe the faculty possess the moral integrity to faithfully do research or treat others with different opinions in kindness and modesty without harsh disapproval, rejection, and hostility. My desire and objective to be an environmental leader ultimately led to a high pressure to conform ideologically to a dogmatic leftwing/intensely liberal ideology and the understanding that the program was morally corrupt, even in the greater scheme of environmental stewardship. I did not get mileage out of my degree. The education did not earn me more than what a Bachelor's degree would, and was overpriced, esteeming the wrong virtues for moral leadership. read more

My average rating is for the FYE (First Year Experience) orientation. My review is solely on their "Orientation" Pros: 1) Great info via mail and online. 2) Lots of swag if you like that. 3) FYE ap, but it needs room for real feedback. Cons: 1) No real organization of activities for the day before orientation starts for students coming in a day early from out of state. 2) Bathrooms not available for parents for long presentation at the beginning of the program. 3) Student led for parents. It got old. Give us some administrators to talk to. 4) Housing assignments still not available so unable to tour dorm. This is unacceptable for out of state families. 5) Herding us in to auditoriums like cattle. We are adults. Let us seat ourselves. read more

I'm basing this review solely on my visit here as a guest for two days - I interacted with adminstrators mostly. The campus is beyond gorgeous - limestone buildings, several built in the late 1800s. Woods right as you enter the campus gates. College town just outside the gates. Everyone was friendly. New students going through orientation. Very traditional feel to the campus and school, but I am unfamiliar with specific programs. Huge student union - somewhat shuttered for summer with limited hours. Lots of IU gear available. Beyond the campus and immediate town, small towns/rural areas surround the area. Worth a visit. read more

Dissertation Length and Focus: A significant indicator of the program's organizational issues is reflected in the length and scope of the dissertations produced. Ranging from 350 to 700 pages, these works often deviate significantly from the intended focus, suggesting a lack of clear guidance and oversight from the faculty. This can be particularly challenging for students aiming to specialize in a specific niche, as the program struggles to maintain a consistent research focus. Final Thoughts: While every graduate program has its challenges, the ones present in the Anatomy Education Ph.D. Program in Bloomington can significantly hinder your academic and professional progress. I visited many competing universities with my son (well, the whole family went). Indiana University is great for these reasons: 1) The staff and faculty seem to genuinely care about the students and their well being. Yes, I know every university makes a strong pitch to Mom and Dad. But look at IU's programs, offerings, and support mechanisms. They are better than we saw at Vanderbilt, Michigan, Northwestern, USC, UCLA, and Ohio State. 2) They have a HUGE offering of majors and courses of study. 3) The campus is beautiful, with lots of trees, hills, green-spaces, and stone and brick buildings, mixed with modern glass and metal. 4) Bloomington is a great city to host a university of 48,000. 5) Bobby Knight is GONE. If you are using Yelp to assist with choosing a college - then IU is most definitely for you. It is a great place to get crunked for 5+ years of your life. While most fans of IU never attended the university - getting a diploma will put you at the head of the applicants list for any Wal-Mart you may choose to work at. This may not sound great, but think about it - if you grew up in Brookston or Fowler, there are Wal-Marts everywhere. Living in Ft Wayne is not entirely out of the question!!!! This is a very nice campus spread out over almost 2,000 acres in southern Indiana. Since Indiana limestone is quarried just a few miles down the road, most of the buildings are built out of this beautiful material. Indiana University (IU) is a Big-10 school on an absolutely drop dead gorgeous campus setting in Monroe County Indiana...very close to the more famous Brown County. IU is located about 45 miles south of Indianapolis. But this is a big university and as such it has some goods and bads. The negatives are really just related to a few large classes where some may not feel they are getting the attention they need, and the fact that as a university with over 40,000 students one has to make an effort to find their way because it can sometimes feel a bit impersonal. But that said, the negatives here are really very few. A positive point in having a big university is that it can offer just about everything in the way of academics and athletics. If you can't find a niche you like here, you probably won't find it anywhere. About the only programs they lack on the Bloomington campus are a medical school (most people attend the Indianapolis campus for medical school) or an engineering program (which they are just starting now). The Bloomington campus humanities programs are broad and deep, its language programs can stand up to anyone's, its Jacobs School of Music is special, and its Kelley School of Business is a standout. They also have a top-50 law school on campus. All-in-all, you get a world class education at a reasonable price here in Indiana. Residence halls are very nice, the student union is a knock out, social/Greek life is abundant, availability of extra-curricular activities is excellent, and the caliber of the faculty is excellent. Another nice thing here is that the University is not resting on its laurels...they are constantly upgrading their facilities with a new building or school coming on line just about every other year. In the time my best and brightest has been there, they opened Hodge Hall in the business school, and opened the School of Global and International Studies. IU-Bloomington is very good now, and it keeps getting better. You'll never have to feel inadequate getting a degree from Indiana University. Highly recommended for your best and brightest. read more

The only "con" I can think of is parking (and the football team :) )... Ref Parking: That's an issue at any huge university, right!? Oh IU. I have grown to love you more than I can ever say. Sure, things didn't start out that great -- due to three roommates, one of whom liked to be up at 4AM blowdrying her hair while talking loudly on her phone -- but that is only tangentially your fault. But I can at least say one thing about that experience: I now am ready for anything given to me at 4AM as I try to sleep. You have a beautiful well kept campus. Sure, right now I'm a bit miffed at the construction going on at random points around campus, but that's nothing that a little bit more of a scenic walk can get me. All the professors I've had have been wonderful, though I'm well aware there are bad ones for every good one. And Bloomington? Bloomington is the perfect town for you, with delivery cookies, and a billion pizza places, and all kinds of food that you normally cannot find in Indiana. Hey I wanted to add comment that regards the Indiana University Memorial Union and give a special shot out to the supervisor there HOLLY WHO SAVED THE DAY ON THE DELIVERY OF SERVICES ASSOCIATED WITH THE UNIVERSITY FOOD APP HOOKED. First you should realize, that the use of this app can morph into quite a hairy deal when the advertised event is attended by many. Unfortunately, this transpired the first time I decided to participate in an advertised event with this app. Having arrived well enough in time before the expiry of the app I joined an incredibly long line at the Burger King that day for something on their menu I had never tried and was excited to experience through Hooked. Concurrently, next door was a line to Baja Fresh for another great Hooked deal. I was informed not to worry that we would be served even though the turn out was immense. I glided through the first line with no effort and they were perfectly organised to deal with the crowd. But when I went to to Fresh's line quite another thing happened...As I saw only one person order the app offer, several others in front of me began placing long orders for other non app items, mind you, my offer was still visible on my app in line. When I got to my turn I was smugly informed the app had expired (less than a few min) and I would definitely not be served!!! So arrogant was the bait and chaise style of delivery I received from the employees I asked to speak to a supervisor to vent my frustration which other non app users in the line felt with me... THANKS TO HOLLY AT THE UNION I WAS SERVED AND DISASTER WAS AVERTED. YOU HAVE HER TO THANK FOR SAVING THE POSITIVE EXPERIENCE AND DELIVERY OF THE HOOKED APP. I am currently a junior at IU and am very satisfied with my choice of universities. Our campus is beautiful, my fellow students are friendly and welcoming (as long as politics are not discussed), academic advisors are tremendously helpful, experienced and knowledgeable, and the professors in my experience with the exception of a few have been tremendously masterful in their content areas. For a university with a full time enrollment of 40,000 + it has been very easy to engage with professors on a personal level despite having had a few classes of 150-200 people. If you are a proactive student and seek out help and guidance professors are very willing to form a relationship. Bloomington is a great town with endless things to do ranging from ice skating to a plethora of restaurants and of course watering holes. I'm very proud to be a Hoosier. read more

Meh. It's a pretty amazing town if you're in school at IU. Generally friendly people, lots of really fine professors, cultural opportunities, restaurants, outdoor activities, etc. There's far more to do in southern Indiana than people usually give the region credit for. It's NOT all flat corn country. It's a nature lover's paradise. Drawbacks: the quality of undergrads has really gone down hill as part of IU's push to get bigger and bigger (not better). In some ways, you'd probably get a better education at a smaller school that wasn't so greedy. Twenty years ago IU was just a great Midwestern school. Now it has its coveted Princeton review rankings to protect, and big business interests are buying it out (in fairness, though, that's happening to every major university in the US). There's an ENORMOUS influx of people from Chicago-land and the East Coast, which can be a huge cultural benefit (without IU, Bloomington would honestly just be another crummy town - you definitely notice a drastic difference in the summer when students leave). I don't get snotty about requiring that every thing and every one be "local" (a short experience living in Madison, WI, taught me how annoying the "local food/local culture" movement can actually be), but the newcomers can definitely change the cultural dynamic. I grew up in Indiana and moved back from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and noticed more snobbiness in the Bloomington atmosphere than I remembered from my visiting here as a kid. Even seemed snobbier than Duke, which is the butt of the media but really a pretty friendly place even with all the old money floating around. Seems like a lot of reviewers get nostalgic about IU because they were in school there, then moved on to real-world responsibilities in big cities where there are actually jobs. They treat Bloomington like it's Eden because this isn't the town where they had to face the real world. If you're a student or have a professional job here, Bloomington is a really great place. If you're just trying to live your and work an ordinary a job, even a white-collar job, it's a pretty difficult town to make a living in. Bloomington: where you live on graduate stipends and financial aid -- sure it's fun! Otherwise, cheap for a college town. Always cultural stuff going on unless it's summer, then honestly... it's pretty dead. read more

Do you love the smell of nature and old books? I love the campus of Indiana University. We stopped by to check out this university because my husband had a possible job prospect. I was delighted with the nature paths and bridges that wind through campus. I can only dream of working in such an awesome environment. The old limestone buildings are gorgeous and smell of old books. I didn't attend Indiana University but it made me wish I had. There is a very old cemetery right in the middle of campus that was interesting to look at and study. The people walking by were very friendly and helpful with directions. The campus has some cool restaurants and stores nearby. But, you get the feeling of a small town out in the country - not the big city at all. It was my ideal place. A world class education for a good price. It's no wonder that IU is known as a public ivy. Even if you're not attending their top rated business, music, foreign language, or social sciences programs. You are still getting an amazing education. There are plenty of student activities on and off campus. The city is amazing and the staff and students are diverse. The student recreation facility is one of the largest in the world and the student union is also one of the largest. IU is also known as one of the most beautiful college campuses in the country. For an all around stimulating and quality education it doesn't get much better than IU. read more

It took me about 10 seconds to decide that this should be my 100th review! IU is exactly what a college should be, it's heaven. Like when you picture college or a college town, it's IU. A town focused pretty much solely on its students, gorgeous campus, fun people, laid back atmosphere, great professors, great old bars with cheap drinks and a lake nearby. Seriously everyone MUST spend at least one summer on campus! I soooo wish I could come back and try to fly back as often as possible. It makes me sad being 600 miles away! I miss you Bloomington! For a state school this place is a super nice campus. I love their Student Union. I went to camp in Indiana and I have a had a lot of friends go to this university. IU is a great place to be in the fall for a football game even though this is a basketball school. The campus looks great in the fall when the leaves are about to change over. I always seem to have a good time at this university and the town of Bloomington rocks. Bloomington is one of the best college towns in the country. I gave the university 5 stars because women at IU seem to like here more than at other colleges I visit in Ohio. Great place to be, I would recommend this university to any HS students that wants that big school atmosphere and a great education. read more

My teachers at Indiana University were sleeping with each other (Kelley School of Business), and one jumped off a parking garage. And all of us kids have student loan debt, the education, was no education. Nothing in which they teach transmit to a job. So much, that big companies know this. That they know that you've learned nothing, have debt and are slightly brainwashed. BEAUTIFUL Campus. Horrible school. I regret daily, into my 30s, spending 4 years at Indiana University. Its a low low quality of education. You'd be way better off using the internet and books. I'd go as far to say as IU is useless. The people who say Indiana University is great, are usually the brainwashed. Usually from small towns. If you go to an inner public city school, this is a step backwards in education. For the rural kids, its a forward step because theres more diversity. I really, really do not like this place. Nor the type of people that it produces, they usually go to law firms and consulting firms in Chicago, not because they're smart, usually because they're stupid and are easily given marching orders. I was a student here years ago, and still live in Bloomington. There is no doubt that after more than 20 years, there have been some up and there have been some downs. I was a grad student here, and even though I didn't really like my department, the University itself was and is pretty great. I have lived through the end of Bobby Knight and Miles Brand, soccer championships, and always awful football. There are still sports for those who love it. There is a great music program, some great art to see with the IU Art Museum and the Mathers Museum . problems? yes, because it is a big institution, and the city of Bloomingrton is getting too big and has more of the kinds of problems I want to avoid, like more and more crime and drugs. But I stil like IU, so many of the people I know work or go to school there. did I mention my daughter is 5th generaton IU student? her great-grandmother,both maternal grandparents,both parents went to IU. We love IU even in the summer when all the students leave and it feels like a much smaller town, but love it when they come back because of all the diverse restauraunts and other businesses that wouldn't thrive if IU weren't here. read more

Yes, the campus is beautiful. But education isn't really about the look of things -- the landscape and buildings. All of this is just window dressing. What matters is what happens in the classroom, and the dorm. I spent four years here and for me, it was the beginning of the end of innocence. I learned not to trust what higher ups tell me, but to always verify things for myself -- to do my own research. I learned that there's a reason they want everyone in the dorms for one year. Because they don't intend on treating you like an adult, even if you're paying for college yourself, as I was, but intend on treating you as a person who needs to be formed in their diversity-inclusion-delusion image. We were required to attend diversity lectures my freshman year (our whole dorm floor, as a group) and when I asked an innocent and totally honest question of a lesbian student, I was shouted down and sat there completely shamed and bewildered in front of 60 of my peers. I had to come up out of it all, and began to figure out what is going on at IU. Studying Soviet education helped. I won't let my son go here. I want him to grow up to be a real man. I'll probably have him work on an oil derrick for a couple of years, and then go to a Great Books school, or study with a privately hired group of scholars. read more

Camp IU. Beautiful campus - no where else in Indiana comes close. You must see the Student Union, landscaping is awesome and so are the students. Shouldn't these kids be in school?? Terrible place to work. They don't even pay enough to be off government assistance, except of course if you are in the sports department. They offered health insurance, but didn't pay enough to cover copays and coinsurance! Really, how badly organized can a University be? If they didn't offer health insurance at least people could get the coverage they deserve for the pay they are being offered. read more
