The food is absolutely amazing! Felt very homey and the vibes around the place was absolutely positive. The food is so good, would definitely come back again! Plus, the owner himself was so sweet and generous and kept checking on us! I LOVED IT

If half stars were a thing, I'd give this place 3,5. I was in Munich and had a weekend of eating German food and crap stuff for dinners in the Alps. I needed something with intense flavor and found this place on Yelp. I was looking for something super cheap and it had the 'one euro' sign beside it meaning it was right in my price range. It was so easy to find as it was right off of the main road going towards the Isar. I picked a table outside since it was sunny and absolutely perfect weather. The waiter was quick to attend to me and gave me a menu. I was very shocked to find the vegetarian dishes were 10 euros. That is not a 'one euro' sign to me. In Frankfurt, a city known for being more expensive than Munich, I can get a good veggie curry for less than 7 Euros. Never the less, I ordered a Kerala curry for 9,95. It automatically comes with rice and I ordered a beer to the side. I also asked for it to come out spicy and I made sure to say this in English so he knew I wasn't German (no offense- Germans have low tolerance for spice compared to many other places). The curry came out in about 3 minutes. I found that to be a little strange... like a Tex-Mex restaurant in the US. I am all about being prompt and efficient, but 3 minutes or less makes me question things. Either way, I was hungry so it was fine. OH MY FREAKING GOODNESS. I have had spicy food in Indonesia, India, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Jamaica, etc.... but NOTHING was as spicy as this curry was. Holy freaking hell. I cried eating it. I drank my entire beer within five minutes. I have the highest tolerance of spice of anyone I know on the planet, so for me to say this- I mean it. My lips tingled for hours after eating this and it gave me heartburn- something I've never once in my life suffered from. I couldn't complain about it because I asked for it spicy, just never imagining it would come out at this level. The only recommendation I would have is to maybe use some fresh herbs or a splash of citrus on the Kerala curry. It is a sweet, coconuty curry that really needed some cilantro atop it, or even just a slice of lime with it. May not be the traditional thing, but it would have helped overcome the sweetness. But the chili did that anyways... Despite hardly being able to taste it, it was rather good. Good enough to warrant a 4 star rating on Yelp, I believe. The best thing about this place is the fact that they offer loads of vegetarian dishes. They have some chicken and mutton/lamb dishes as well. Most dishes are southern Indian, but they do have some options for lovers of the north, too. I was impressed by the selections on their menu, especially having three paneer dishes available to customers! If you want to order a dosa, you must call ahead 24 hours to place the order (just a side note). I was content eating here and would probably go back there if in Munich.

Friendly staff make the visit enjoyable. The dishes are prepared well and use good ingredients. I've come often and always greeted by the staff so I've made it a regular place for dinner while in Munich.

The atmosphere here is super relaxed, and not at all like the fancy dining experiences that most Indian restaurants offer.

As I hunt for the ultimate Asian / Indian restaurant in Munich, I have learnt, be prepared to be disappointed, specially with a name like Mataji, as it means Mother in Hindi and, I am sorry, nothing comes close to my mums kitchen lol. This place did surprise me and, I really enjoyed my meal here and, will definitely come back. The owner is apparently Bengali and that would also mean a Bengali chef in the kitchen. Bengali chefs are renowned for great flavour in India and, this place had it in bucket fulls :-)) The food was mild and well suited for the local palette but, the flavour was great. I would give the food here 4.5 stars. I ordered the Klassik Thali from the menu (a variety of curries and condiments to try). It's always a good way to sample the cooking across a range of dishes, when in an Indian restaurant. It also gives you a good sense of the place. I asked for Chicken Tikka Masala and Lamb Korma. They included some Raita, Salad and a vegetable curry. The thali came with rice and naan bread. This is the first restaurant in Munich where I devoured the Naan bread, it was so good - 5 stars for the naan :-) The curries were really well flavoured and the meat was of good quality. I enjoyed every spoonful. There was nothing about the meal I did not like. They have an extensive menu with most classic North Indian dishes and some vegan & plenty of vegetarian dishes also. The rassogull for dessert was my first in Munich and, I had high expectations. Bengalis are the dessert kings of India and, whilst this one was ok, it could have been better and more squeaky, which makes it soft and chewy. The mango lassi here was to die for and, I absolutely loved it - 5 stars for the mango lassi. All in all a great experience. Service was friendly and, the lady who served me also spoke Hindi, which made selection slightly easier. Food is little more on the expensive side compared to many Indian restaurants but, if they serve quality like this, I would happily pay for it. I am glad I keep persisting and trying new places, once in a while you get lucky :-) a nice choice for Indian food in the neighbourhood.

I had this stuff three times a day for 20 some odd years and, also learnt to cook it from my mom ;-)) As I suspected, I can do this heaps better myself but, for Munich, it is pretty good, hence the three stars. It really is 2.5 stars for me. The menu has a handful of South Indian dishes in it but it's not a South Indian menu. The main thing I wanted to try here was dosa. Unfortunately for me it lacked flavour and seasoning. The dosa itself had good texture and done well however, the taste let it down. The coconut chutney that came with it was made from powdered coconut and it was ordinary at best. The South Indian mixed vorspeise was a bit disappointing and lacked flavour. It's suited to the German palette and not an Indian one. Service was very friendly and the guy who welcomed us was very nice. The place is big with lots of outdoor seating and a nice way to spend an evening. I may go back here again but it's too far from home and I would have to really think hard before I do. I did not have high expectations when we decided to go here and my expectations were met. An ok place for South Indian food in Munich. Not really authentic but it will do. As a lover of South Indian food I will have to keep looking for a place where I can have this food made the way I like it ;-))
