We went in as a group of 11 (3 families), non-tourist on Sunday 11.11, for lunch. The restaurant was fairly empty and we had called before. We planned for a full lunch meal, but ended up leaving the restaurant without ordering. Reason: A) The waiter insisted that order must be minimum 12 euros per head before he can serve us! B) The waiter insisted on us reading the menu again and again, even though we were asking how he can serve us better! We could have easily spent in excess of 20 euro per head plus tips, but no luck. I got to know this restaurant through a recommendation from a friend. She said so many good things about it. Thus, I just had to try it. Compared to the other Indian restaurants I already went in Munich this is one has simple but nice interior, not overwhelming at all. I was already two times there. On the first time I had a "Malai Kofta", which is the first one I always try, given that it is my favorite. It seems every Indian restaurant has a slightly different recipe for this dish: sometimes it is very spicy, other times not at all; sometimes the croquette balls are made with a cheese base, other times with potato base; sometimes with almonds, other times with cashews. Their version is with a vegetable-potato base with cashews and not so spicy. I found this version very tasty, but I still prefer the ones that are cheese based. The second dish I tried was "Chana Masala" which is usually made mostly with chickpeas. But their version is called "Alu Chana Masala" and this actually a mix of chickpeas and potatoes. I also tasted very good, but I really prefer chickpeas over potatoes. My next time there I am going to try the "Palak Paneer" (cheese and spinach). Since I don't Like rice so much, I always go for the Naan bread, at least two pieces. Certainly the Naan there is one of the best ones I had here in Munich: reasonable size, not to oily, and very fresh and tasty. Bad experience with this Restaurant. My wife and her parents visited wanting to have lunch ( 4 persons) and chose a menu. The guy wanted a minimum order of 4x12=48€. He wouldnt accept an order of 44€. They walked out in disgust. read more

American living in Munich now over a year. Have eaten here 5 times. The food is superb. Always beyond expectation. I usually choose a lamb dish but vege options also are very good. The service is average to good. In Munich, really good service is almost non existent , so just be prepared and if it is adequate, you've exceeded the norm.. Really though if you are into Indian cuisine this place has exceptional dishes at reasonable prices. I've never been dissapointed. read more

Ate here last week and was less than pleased with the whole experience. LOCATION: 4 STARS - Location is great, on a pleasant, small sidestreet/alley just a stone's throw from Viktualienmarkt. The place looks nice from the outside, and is a pleasing oasis of calm and gentle (read: low) lighting once you step inside. The tables are set nicely and laid out in such a way that every place appears to enjoy a small, intimate feeling. The music selection, which I find rather important to setting atmosphere, was a questionable assortment of pop, so, minus one. SERVICE: 1 STAR - We had a waiter and a waitress seemingly competing to mismanage our table. The waiter was quite unwelcoming, and the waitress had a neutral air at best. It also took quite an effort to flag them down. FOOD: Inconsistent 2 STARS - APPETIZERS / SIDES: My friend ordered the pappad, which came out inexplicably quite slowly. The three sauces, which I cannot name, were quite flavourful. The green sauce was favoured by both of us. The red sauce, not so much. In appearance, it came across to me a little bit like sweet and sour sauce from a cheap Chinese restaurant. My friend claimed it was spicy, but I didn't notice any. The third sauce can only be described as a very bitter Indian barbecue sauce. Quite interesting to eat, that was our second favourite. I ordered some naan as a side to go with our food. It was not very good. Additionally, I wanted just plain naan, but they had slabbed some spices on to it. Naan is such a basic and crucial element to a nice Indian dinner, that this alone could keep me from giving them a second chance. MAIN DISHES: My friend ordered the Mutton Vindaloo, and that came out pretty good. It was nicely spiced, and plated well too on a sizzling platter. I ordered, as I always do on my first trip to an Indian restaurant, the Dal Shorba. It was bland and, in my opinion, not at all spicy. However, I am one of those extreme cases that can literally drink habanero sauce from the bottle. My friend found a little heat in both his dish and mine, but we did agree that my Dal Shorba was quite bland. NICE TOUCHES: When we paid, they brought out some complimentary shots of some sort of Indian liqueur, the name of which I can never remember. It was quite tasty, and always a welcome touch when being presented with the bill. On that note, this place is moderately priced, so if you're just looking for a quiet place to eat and don't care too much about the negatives I listed above, this would be a good choice. I would give 4 stars for the food and 1 star for the service. Went in on a rainy day and was greeted by a grump guy who spoke only Hindi or Bangladeshi. No English! He said we can stay there just for an hr only as the table is reserved! Since we didn't want to go else since it was raining so we decided to stay. He sets up a table and disappears. He showed up when my little kid was having her own water! And he came to stop that saying outside food wasn't allowed! So I told him to go get us a bottle. The food was really good unfortunately besides the attitude. Then comes the owner who seems nice, I casually asked is it a busy day and he says no not at all. Apparently no one showed up at our table until 10:30pm!! Then comes the desert which was kulfi but turned out be rock solid and stale. Now it's the owners turn to refuse to accept that it's old and rocky!!?? Something strange with this people seriously. Poor chef stuck at a wrong place. Go there for food, and ignore the nonsense around. Don't talk or engage with the people...it's good for you. read more

This place has a crappy (and weird) customer service. We visited this place for lunch as a group of 5 people. We were informed that we must order food equivalent of 12€ per person! When we asked why was this policy, the server started giving strange answers such as how they have to spend 1€ for cleaning the table cloth etc. the food was not that great either and the server was ill-informed about the beers. The portion size was small and the dishes did not come with a side of rice or roti. This is very abnormal for a Indian restaurant in Germany. As per my experience, all other Indian restaurants have always served their dishes with a side. Overall, I suggest to skip this restaurant as there are plenty of other good Indian restaurants in Munich! read more

The Indian guy at the restaurant was completely RACIST. Firstly no one came to take my order for over 15 mins, when the place had only 5-6 patrons. Next the guy who came to take my order made some weird faces/gestures while taking my order. Avoid this place. It's weird coz I am Indian too (from the US) and not used to these things. I am talking about the half bald guy wearing a kada (bangle) in his right hand. Disappointing behavior from the guys who have an got an opportunity in life. Just walked out. read more

Ruined by one waiter. Would not recommend. I am Indian so was craving Indian food when I found this place on yelp. I ordered chicken kadai, naan and sweet lassi for dinner. My bill was 23€. Positives: Beautiful interiors, good lighting and pleasant music (most Indian restaurants get this wrong) The food was decent quality, made fresh and not adulterated. The German waitress was polite and attentive and frankly the only saving grace. Negatives: The sweet lassi had massive chunks or cardamom instead of powder so it kept getting stuck in the straw and I had to keep spitting it out. The male Indian waiter has a very rough and rude mannerism about him. He pretty much ruined the whole experience. He was loud and was staring at me while I was eating. He also hovers around making customers very uncomfortable, guessing because he has nothing much to do. I saw the same observations in the previous reviews and had a chat with him. He is from a small village in India I am guessing its just his personality, I don't think he realizes what he's doing. Then, it all adds up when the restaurant owner and his family walks in, they had the same mannerisms as well. The entire family was loud, disrupting the ambience. The kids playing loud video games on smart phones. All speaking very loudly. Ruined my dinner before Oktoberfest. Will definitely not be returning here or recommending this place to anyone. read more

After deciding for a period of time I decided to give this place 3 starts and not 4 I was considering. I enjoy Indian food and there is hardly an Indian restaurant in Munich I haven't been to. So, let me be fair about this one and start with the positives. I was hesitant to visit the place due to its location, but was pleasantly surprised not to find typical touristic crowd although this place is less than 100 m away from Hofbrauhaus. The restaurant has neat interior, not too loud and generally is nice. The menu has a huge vegetarian section, which positively differs it from other Indian places around Germany. Seems to be a heaven for ginger lovers like myself. I ordered a palak paneer and garlic naan and I truly enjoyed both. But, and here comes the negative part, all of my positive experience was ruined by bad and unattentive service. Hence 3 stars. Had the service been nicer, this place could easily get 4 or 5 stars. read more

I was in marinplatz area and after spending the day sightseeing I got hungry but wanted a sit down place not something to eat on the go so I walked around and eventually stumbled into this restaurant, it was about 2-3pm so it was mostly empty, the ambiance was nice and reminded me of some other Indian restaurants I've been to, the staff was good the food was fresh as I heard them cooking it after I ordered, since I was in Germany I kept with my personal challenge to have a beer everyday I was there, so I actually had an Indian beer which was just ok but my standards have changed since going to Germany, for food I ordered vegetable samosas which were good but not the best I've had, I also had the chicken tikka masala which again was good but not the best I've had, it came with rice and they even offered me more rice when I was done but I passed since I was full, I can't say I'd come back because there are so many restaurants I'd try around here first but it wasn't bad read more

+ Excellent selection of breads. Try the kulchas - they are very good! I wish that they would serve Rumali Roti :) + Very good Daal Bukhara. I'm not sure if they actually cook the lentils overnight, the way it is supposed to, and the waiter's response to my very specific question about this was ambiguous. However, the daal was very tasty, if a tad heavy on the butter. + Several dishes on the Chef's Special menu and the regular menu that were a refreshing addition to the standard Punjabi fare that one sees at most Indian restaurants in Germany - Dismal lighting. DIm does not equal intimate. - Pungent odors hanging in the air. This place needs better ventilation. I get that it is winter. There is a coat rack is in the foyer. Use it. o Service was okay. Not particularly pleasant but also nothing to complain about. Drinks and food were brought out in good time. Verdict: Garam Masala is not my favorite Indian restaurant in the city, but it's certainly an option I would consider when I'm around central Munich and have a hankering for Indian food. Saw a review here and decided to visit. I was warmly welcomed and the wait staff spoke good english. The menu is large and me and my companion took couple of starters and two main dishes. All of the food was amazing! The starters were big and it was difficult to eat the mains. We left a lot food uneaten so I would say go to Garam Masala hungry! Prices are low as a lot of ethnic places have. I will definitely go back when visiting München next time. read more

We found this restaurant to be very good. We travel and eat out frequently and the quality of the food and service was excellent. My only regret is ordering too much food 2-3 dishes is plenty for two. The duck with mango sauce was great and also the chef specials. I was visiting Munich and my friend told me about Garam Masala. So, I went there. When I got there I said party of one. The host prepared a table and then as he was seating me, he said you have an hour to finish your dinner. What a rude comment. He also never came to my table to ask how things were. Food was OK but the behavior was rude and unwelcome. I would never go there again. The meals and drinks were as expected and tasty. The waiter was attentive to special requests and they were honored by the kitchen. Ambience is adequate and more than you get elsewhere in Munich.
