Indian Lodge Motel is the easy, convenient, choice for lodging in Joseph, Oregon. If you want to stay in town and avoid the family-fun-center style chaos of the South end of the lake, this is a good spot. It's right on the end of the downtown strip, close to the North end of the lake (with the better dock and "beach") and otherwise super centrally located. This is a classic motel. It's small, the reservations are made via phone, and the prices even at high season are just over $100/night. Normally this would be spendy for a motel, but at peak season in a place like Joseph demand is high. So I felt lucky to get a room with only a few weeks notice over the 4th of July. Here are a few handy things to know about Indian Lodge: 1. Reservations are by phone or in-person only. 2. Rooms are okay size, but very dark. This helps keep them cooler in the winter, but they're also kind of cave-like. 3. The motel is only semi-pet-friendly, and only in the off-season. Call in advance to check. 4. Rooms have A/C but the unit is right next to the bed, so whoever sleeps on the AC side of the bed may need to build a barrier of pillows to block the blasting stream of cold air that blows right out of the unit on to the bed about 1.5 feet away. Otherwise this motel is a solid choice since, well, when you come to a place like the Wallowas, you don't want to spend a bunch of time actually in your room. You want to get the hell out and see the world!

You get what you pay for. Super clean, well run and maintained, genuine nice employees, sweet as sugar, working owner. Worth every dime. We thought it priced more than fair. Only 16 units, exceptional quality,, they have to make their nut charging just a few bucks more, but still pretty much at industry average. Comfortable beds, TV and everything worked well. Nicely maintained property with beautiful views. Built by actor Walter Brennan around 1940 who owned the 12.000 acre Lightning Creek Ranch outside of town. It's a motel for cryin' out loud,,,,, not the Hyatt.

The Jennings Hotel - Room 10

The Jennings Hotel

I spent three nights in Joseph, primarily because I wanted to day hike in the Wallowa mountains…read more But I also wanted to be able to clean up at the end of the day and walk to nice restaurants to start and end my day. So I chose to stay at The Jennings. I thought it would also be fun to stay in an historic building. And it is perfectly located at the center of town. I would definitely recommend folks stay here, as long as they understand that this hotel is different (it is not your typical hotel) and they're ok with that and want what this place does have to offer. They have a Minimalist vibe going on here. Both in terms of the room decorations and furnishings. As well as with the staff. There is no staff on site! So don't expect to be pampered like a traditional hotel. Communication is by email and they send you the code for the door and you simply let yourself in after check in time. So that is definitely different. I'm not sure of that approach is a thing in the hotel business these days but I've certainly never seen it before. It worked out ok in my case. Fortunately, I never needed anything. I'm not sure what it would be like if I did. The other thing to note about The Jennings is that most of the rooms do NOT have their own private bathroom. They share a common bathroom. There is one shared water closet and another shared water closet with a shower. This is not unusual for hotels in historic buildings. However, a few rooms DO provide a private bathroom so read those room descriptions carefully so you know what you're getting! There's also a shared sauna with a cold plunge shower. The other big thing to note about The Jennings is that it is NOT a place for kids. Their policy asks to avoid bringing kids under 12 years of age. Best to respect that. They'd be bored here. They do provide WiFi but there are no TVs in the rooms. I think that is a plus! I stayed in Room 5 1/2. It's a great room for one or two people and it does provide a private bathroom. The bathroom is a bit small but well furnished. It also has a shower which I greatly appreciated after a long day hiking. Some early reviews complained about lack of air conditioning. They fixed that! My room contained units for both A/C and heat. It also had a ceiling fan and a small fan on the table. The bed was top notch and very comfy. I did not hear any street noise. Most of the rooms overlook the side streets, not main street. So that helps avoid the noise. I also had no problem with noise from any of the adjacent rooms. There is also a shared kitchen that provides a refridgerator, oven, sink, dishwasher, plates, utensils, and coffee maker. There is no microwave. There's also a large table to eat at. And there's a small couch to sit in front of a (gas?) fireplace Oh and don't forget the balcony! The hotel is on the second floor of this building. And there's a large balcony that looks over Main street and provides an awesome view of the mountains. Overall, the space and furnishings are elegant, nothing cheap about anything. It's just Minimalistic. And historic. And there's no staff on site. I wish them well!

One twin bed downstairs and a queen upstairs. Plenty of storage space. The ladders are a bit narrow to get to the upstairs but there are handrails to help. The bathtub is super cool but for me, I prefer a standup shower especially when I need to wash my hair. Other than that, this place was well stocked and clean for us upon arrival.

I won't go into the details of the chaos that ensued, but suffice it to say that waiting two hours for dinner was unacceptable, especially as we watched other people get seated, order, be served and leave before we had anything, Not even a bread basket or crackers for goodness sakes. The young man who was identified as the manager was sarcastic instead of helpful. When I asked him what the holdup was and pointed out that our dinner orders had been in place for two days, his snarky response was, "Well, we didn't start cooking them two days ago." No explanation and no offer to help. Afterwards, I sent an email to Jane, the woman I'd coordinated with for weeks asking her to just explain what happened. Her response? Crickets. Not enough professional courtesy to even respond to an email let alone offer an apology. Being ghosted after your group has been treated rudely and after spending hundreds of dollars is more than a lack of courtesy. It's the mark of a poorly trained staff. I'm sure dinner for two they can manage but don't take a group there.

At check in I was assigned a room on the second floor. When given instructions on the best stairwell to access my room I learned there was no elevator. Due to health conditions I find climbing stairs to be extremely difficult. I asked if he could change m3 to a first floor room and he said that would not be possible though it appeared to me that I was an early check in he should have easily charged room assignment. Apparently he was not authorized to make any decisions as I heard him tell other guests that he would have to call the owner or manager. I'm a loyal Best Western traveler and though this hotel was just "okay" I find that their sub brands are not nearly as nice as their core brand. The free breakfast while adequate was the same each morning, sausage gravy, biscuits, sausage links and sausage patties and pre fried eggs. No fresh fruit but three cold cereals and selection of breads.

The front desk clerk Andy was really nice and welcoming. Made checking in super simple. He explained all the amenities perfectly. And got us to our room in a hurry which we loved cause we were so tired. He explained that there was no elevator which we didn't mind cause we traveled light. When we got to the room it was exactly what we needed. Everything was clean and and in great working order. Only thing is the DirectTv left a lot of channels to be desired. In the morning the continental breakfast is from 6-10. I over slept so didnt get in till 7. When I opened the warmer they were out of eggs and biscuits. I was slightly bummed but knew it was my fault so I didn't mind too much. Well the day time lady (forget her name) came out in a hurry with a HUGE good morning and noticed and immediately asked if I'd like some and made me some FRESH! I ate alot and went back to sleep. Oops over slept again! It was 10 and check out is at 11! I called down to inquire about a late checkout and the super nice clerk gave me untill 12! What great service! PROS: Great service Good continental breakfast Great value CONS: No elevator TV channels lacking

The cabins are also cable ready, but the wifi is a bit spotty and you can only check email. However, you're on vacation, so detach from the computer or smart phone and take a walk to the lake to enjoy the other fabulous activities in the Wallowa Lake area. The resort is centrally located within walking distance to the lake, mini-golf courses, go carts, shops, restaurants, the marina, the tram up to Mt. Howard, and much more. The Wallowa Lake resort has a spa on the property as well, so bring your suit. Dogs are also welcome for an extra fee and you will be provided with a dog pack that includes a sheet, treat, and other necessities. Just be sure to keep fido on a leash while on the property or in a crate if you leave them alone. Otherwise, they're very accommodating here. I would definitely stay here again. The property is beautiful.
