Mumbai 27 - Kolkata Thali, Horin-Er-Mangsho (Venison)

One of the most unique dishes was the Horin-Er-Mangsho, a loin of local venison flame-grilled to medium rare and served with tamarind sauce on the side. The venison was super juicy, meaty, and flavorful, making for a delicious starter. For my main, I got the Kolkata Thali, described on the menu as "South East Indian Tapas." This metal platter came with a sampling of different vegetarian dishes including breaded paneer, aloo tikki (spiced mashed potato patty), stir-fried okra, shredded potatoes, dal (mixed lentils), chickpeas in tomato sauce, eggplant in tomato sauce, raita, rice, and plain naan. My favorite was the aloo tikki, which was nicely spiced--in general, however, most of the dishes on the thali were all toned down in spices to fit a more Anglo-Indian flavor palate. So while this wasn't the most authentic Indian food I've tried, the restaurant still made for nice trendy dining experience.

We had some fantastic food- Chicken tikka masala was tasty, and we also enjoyed the garlic naan, prawns appetizer, and Murghi Shashlik (chicken tikka with vegetables and mosala sauce). This was our favorite restaurant on our trip to London, Ireland and Northern Ireland!! Try it if you are in Belfast!!

I enjoyed my first visit to Safa. Service was excellent and wine good, in particular the Soave was…read moremoreish. But the wine list in-restaurant is different to that detailed on Safa's website. Would be good to see it updated. I visited with 3 friends and we started off by sharing crisp, crunchy, fresh poppadoms. Unfortunately the accompanying dips were a little lacklustre as there could have been a bit more flavour to them. My Vegetable Pakora appetiser was delicious and my main of Ponnier Bhuna good but with a slightly strange bitter taste. My side of Mushroom Pilau Rice disappointed as it lacked mushrooms, being more of a mixed vegetable rice. Probably room for improvement in food flavours required for me personally. One of my dining companions thought the meat in her Goat Korma tough. Another that her Vegetable Madras not spicy enough, though on sampling it I thought it had quite a kick but could have been more flavourful. A nice little restaurant visually, but very quiet on a Friday evening with few other tables occupied so ambience was low. Nonetheless, our visit overall was a pleasant experience, enhanced by the friendly staff and great service. Probably a 3.5 star spot for me personally.

The warm and welcoming L shaped dining area has plenty of room for groups, parties or pairs. Delighted to find cobra on tap it's so refreshing and great accompaniment for a spicy curry. Our visit was part of a group event, we where served poppadoms and dips while our meal was set up on chafing dishes for a buffet style service. I was disappointed to find basic options of foods to showcase Safa. Although what we did have - veg pakora, pilau rice and a chicken dish was nice. I was hoping to have a little more variety of main meat or veg options and maybe some sides saag aloo or naan to experience the offer. I would try here again as I know this style of event is different and sometimes difficult to cater for with so many taste buds!

Having tried the excellent 'La Tasca' last week (see review) we set off in search of bigger and…read morebetter food horizons and having heard some very good things about the Indian Ocean we were drawn toward to restaurant for an relaxing evening meal. First impressions? 5 star! We walked in the door, were greeted by enticing aromas wafting from the kitchen and were seated in the busy but not bunged restaurant. For some reason the waiter tried to place us in some corner seat near the entrance away from the rest of the diners, which isn't really my scene (I prefer being closer to the action) but once we were appropriately seated we found ourselves browsing through an appetising range of meals. We ordered a shandy and a pint (Tennents Ice Cold) to wet our mouths whilst deciding...well, I can admit, I've drank a pint or two in my time, and I can honestly say I've never tasted anything like this before (and not in a good way!) it just didn't even look right, a dark ale-ish looking colour which smelt like some sort of acidic nastiness and tasted like a bitter excuse for beer. Not a good start!! The waiter said it was because it was a new keg, but who knows! However, two fresh (bottled) beers later we were ready and eager to order. Sadly, the monkfish was off the menu (wish they could have told us before we decided, it would have saved a lot of hassle seeing as it was my boyfriends top three choices ...) In the end we decided on the crab claws and house tandoori mix to start, the highly recommended king prawn special and a chicken korma for mains alongside a plain naan, a mushroom rice and a garlic naan. All in all the food didn't fail to impress, especially the crab claws which were deliciously juicy and tender, the prawns, which *drool* were simply beautiful, they even looked the part and that's hard to do with prawns (see pics). It was a pity about the monkfish but the server said it wasn't good enough quality so fair play I guess, que c'era, another time. The breads were fresh, moist and well cooked (I'm fussy about naan so you know it's good!) and the rice was particularly nice as well. The service wasn't spectacular though it wasn't unpleasant. I'd say I'd like to either come back here, or try one of the other branches to test out the different qualities / experiences in each, but as far as the Odyssey goes it wasn't bad. I'm not raving about it but I LOVE Indian cuisine so as far as I'm concerned if you're going to do it, do it right! It's handy if you're about the complex, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here.

We had a bit of trouble initially getting seated at one table, they wanted to seat us at two separate ones. In the end they agreed to let us pull the two tables together. It seemed silly to have all that hassle though as i'm sure we're not the first large group they have had to accomodate. Service was good in that the staff were really attentive but they all seemed to be really unfriendly. Still we had a lovely night and the food was so nice i'm planning to go back with my boyfriend next weekend.
