National Museum of the Marine Corps - Catered banquet for promotion ceremony on 2nd deck.

National Museum of the Marine Corps

This is easily the best museum I have ever visited…read more The exhibits are epic in scope and absolutely stunning. The architecture is just as impressive--it's a fantastic homage to the iconic US Marine Corps War Memorial. Wandering the grounds is an experience in itself; they are immense and exceptionally well-maintained, reflecting the quality found inside. During my recent visit, a museum employee who overheard my dad and me discussing the landscaping nearby (not the museum's, which is pristine!) politely stopped to ask for feedback, eager to address any potential issues. That commitment to excellence blew us away. The museum also hosts events beautifully. My brother, who just transitioned from Gunnery Sergeant to 2nd Lieutenant after graduating from OCS, had his celebratory banquet catered by the museum on the second floor. The food was delicious and varied--we had fried chicken, pulled pork, mac and cheese, salad, crackers, fruit, and dessert, among other food choices, plus a small cash bar. The area was nicely laid out, and the banquet tables looked sharp. For everyday amenities, there are two spots to eat, including the iconic Tun Tavern, plus a fantastic, well-stocked gift shop (though be prepared for the prices!). This museum is an absolute must-see.

Marine Toys for Tots Foundation - All Aboard The Toys For Tots Train!!

    Marine Toys for Tots Foundation

Usually my work collects the toys every year at Christmas, and I've donated annually for decades! Or it's easy to find a place to drop one's toy donations off! I didn't realize "Toys for Tots" provides not only toys; they also provide books and emotional support to "those who need hope the most!" Because of "toys" in their foundation name, I thought this was a seasonal foundation. Was I wrong! They have year round outreach including: Foster Children, Native American Program, Youth Ambassador Program, Disaster Response and Recovery Program, and a Literacy Program. This breadth and depth of programs offered means Toys for Toys reaches so many deserving people year round! Well done, Marines! Do consider giving to Toys for Tots, be it at Christmas time or any time! They accept Venmo, Google Pay, PayPal or credit card, and at Christmas, they accept toys, new, and unwrapped as donations! Additionally, you can host a toy drive, apply for toys, and become a local Toys for Tots box donation site.

It's mission is to collect unwrapped toys to distribute to disadvantaged children at Christmas. The non-profit is governed by a Board of Directors and it's main location is just outside the front gate of Quaantico Marine Corps Base which is about 15 miles away from Washington DC. This organization is considered to be one of the top rated charities by "Philantrophy 400". I have enjoyed supporting the charity annually for years. I watch for sales and closeouts throughout the year and collect toys to be given to them in December. I mainly watch for toys for older children of either sex since most people think of little kids when giving toys. There are plenty of drop off locations and if you don't know where to find one you can Google for a local drop off site. I really enjoyed the year my husband's work collected for this charity. Whatever you do don't prewrap your donation as the Marine Corps, the ROTC Marine Corps, and the Reserve Marine Corps want to sort the toys donated. I hope you can find a new toy or two to donate for any age child and any sex. I think this is a five star charity.
