As soon as we walked in, we knew we were in the right place. Right inside the door is a Ford tractor, probably 1954-57. My father-in-law owned a 1955. That was totally random. But also, it was the right place for dinner. Do be aware that it might be spicier than you expect. I got a saag paneer "medium" and it was pretty spicy, much more than my daughter's medium butter chicken. My husband got a chicken dish that was described as "mild-to-medium" and I tell you that the mild was not in the room with us! The food was great and the staff friendly.

The food here is delicious! I'm definitely not a connoisseur when it comes to Indian food as I've only recently tried it, but of the 2 places I've been to, this one far surpasses the other. The food is hot and fresh. Everything is flavorful and well seasoned. I usually get the butter chicken and even though this spot is out of the way for me, it is definitely worth the trip out. I will say though that one time I got medium spicy which is usually perfect for me, and it ended up being waaaay spicier than expected. I'll count that as a one off though. Establishment is always clean and well maintained. Bathrooms are also very clean. Only hassle is the parking, so to keep it simple we just park in the parking garage. Highly recommend this spot.

It's a well-decorated restaurant, very close to Sharp Mercy Hospital, with a very diverse menu and pleasant atmosphere. I enjoyed lunch here despite only two other parties being present during a rainy day. The Shrimp Biryani was flavorful and delicious, with lots of saffron rice that balanced the medium spicy shrimp. The raita on the side provided a nice cooling touch. The entree went really well with Rupee beer - a big improvement over the usual Kingfisher and Taj Mahal. Highly recommended.

We visited India Palace on Super Bowl Sunday, and since it was a quieter evening, we were seated immediately. The staff was very attentive, making our dining experience smooth and enjoyable. For starters, we ordered the pickled vegetables, pakoras, and a salad. The pakoras were large, flavorful, and paired perfectly with the accompanying sauces. The pickled vegetables were also really good. The salad, however, arrived at the end of our meal and felt a bit underwhelming--it could benefit from being either pre-tossed or chopped more finely, as it was mostly lettuce with tomatoes, cucumbers, and a small side of sauce. The highlight of our meal was the chicken tikka masala and fresh bread, both cooked to perfection and packed with flavor. My husband also enjoyed his alcoholic mango lassi, which was a nice addition to the meal. Overall, we had a great experience and would definitely return for delicious Indian food. A few small improvements to the salad presentation would enhance the meal, but everything else was spot on!

Overall Rating: 4.2/5 Ambiance and Atmosphere (4/5) * The decor is inviting, with lots of Indian decorations and some unique paintings, like Indian-style portraits of Kobe Bryant and Drake. * A peaceful waterfall from the ceiling adds a nice touch, though the TV playing Indian music videos disrupted the calm vibe. * Booths and tables are comfy, and photos of the restaurant at night show a festive and decorative look. Both of our visits were during the day. Food Quality (5/5) * The food is incredible--some of the best Indian dishes I've had. * The chicken tandoori was amazing, with a huge portion that's perfect if you're hungry. * The Lamb Tikka was excellent on my second visit. * My wife, who's Indian, loved all the dishes she tried, which speaks to how good the food is. Menu Variety (4/5) * The menu has a solid range of options for vegetarians, meat lovers, and everyone in between. * While the dishes are typical for an Indian restaurant, the flavor and quality are what really stand out. Service (3/5) * The service was good but pretty standard. They're friendly and attentive and all, but lack a lot of personality. They got all our orders right, even with my wife's custom requests. * Nothing really stood out in terms of recommendations or interactions. Value for Money (5/5) * The prices are very reasonable, especially for a Southern California restaurant. * With the quality of food you get, it's a great value. Cleanliness and Location (4/5) * The restaurant was spotless, and we even saw the staff cleaning before they opened when we arrived early one day. Bathrooms were clean and well-maintained. * Parking includes street options and a nearby garage, though the garage adds some expense it is definitely worth it. * Be cautious in the open lots nearby; we had an unpleasant encounter with a homeless man who made threatening comments. This isn't the restaurant's fault, but it's something to be aware of. Whenever we are in the area (on vacation) this is one of our go to places. The food is fantastic, and the reasonable prices make it worth visiting again.

Best Indian food I have ever had. Service always amazing and the ambiance cannot be beaten. I had the butter chicken, as well as the Lamb Goan Curry and it was hands down the best. You HAVE to order the cheesy Garlic Naan!!!!

A standard Indian restaurant. Had some interesting decor, in my opinion did not have a cohesive theme going on. Service was alright as they forgot one of our dishes, but then brought it out when we asked for it. Appetizers: Onion Bhaji: kind of addictive, but very very salty. Needs the tamarind sauce to tone it down. In my opinion just like a better onion ring. Just needs to reduce the salt since the sauces cover most of the flavoring. Entrees: Tandoori Chicken: Good flavoring and tender. Doesn't stand out from other tandoori chickens I've had but is very solidly good. Lamb Biryani: Lamb was good and tender, no smell, rice seemed different than regular basmati rice, felt way too wet. White yogurt sauce brings the dish together but that's expected. Butter Chicken: Solid flavors, maybe less than other places I've been to. A classic dish for sure. Garlic Naan: was good, maybe a little too crispy for me. Not very fluffy enough to soak up the curries.

Great Indian cuisine in Hillcrest! We ordered the Butter Chicken, Lamb Saag and some Garlic Naan. I've had better Butter Chicken dishes at another Nepalese restaurant in Chula Vista but the Lamb Saag was fantastic. I was also very happy with the Garlic Naan, maybe some of the best I've had in San Diego. Our server was great and made sure that our water glasses were full and kept checking in on us to make sure that we had everything we needed. We sat outside on a perfect sunny San Diego day and enjoyed the outdoor seating. So everything from the food taste to the outdoor experience made this visit an excellent choice and I would recommend to anyone who also enjoys good Indian food.

I've had some bites here before, but this was my first time having a full meal. We just decided to do a girls' night and I was first to arrive. It was pretty empty and I didn't even know who else was supposed to be here, so I just waited outside LOL. I noticed that they have a painting of Drake on the wall, which doesn't seem to match the waterfall entrance/decor. After everyone arrived, we were seated and browsed through the menu. We decided to just order a bunch of items and share everything. I had to have my mango lassi, which was thick and very refreshing. For food, we got the chicken tikka masala, 2 garlic naan, mango chutney, papadum, shrimp vindaloo, roti, lamb goat curry, butter chicken, and chicken hariyali. Everything came out pretty quickly in these small bowls, but they were surprisingly filling! The papadum was very interesting- they were crunchy lentil crackers that came with two dipping sauces. The roti was okay, but I thought that the food overall was enjoyable and very flavorful.

Several photos and images add to general ambiance.

A tough day! GPS wanted us to drive through the hospital on a road than no longer existed. Lots of traffic. So we decided to stop and eat a late lunch. Someone pulled out of a parking space directly in front of us! Perfect. And that was the kind of "it-all-fit" experience we had. The food was exceptionally good. Tried green peas and mushrooms and enjoyed. Naan with cheese and garlic was yummy. We also had chicken strips that were fully of chicken, not breading! All the food was tasty and lovely. A quiet relaxing atmosphere allowed us to enjoy our food and get rid of the stress of traffic. Good value with moderate pricing. Quick service with pleasant servers. I would definitely go back... if we lived in San Diego instead of Los Angeles!

There is no buffet at all---lunch or dinner. It is all waiter service and very nice.

Do they have a Sunday buffet?

Not that I don't love a couple of places down there, but it's just not the kind of neighborhood (or non-neighborhood, as the case may be) that inspires confidence in its chain-dominated dining choices. Among the endless traffic and endless-er strip malls, however, Tandoori Guys was a very pleasant surprise. I've dropped in three or dour times now for their weekday lunch special, when from 11am-3pm $12.00 buys you a generous plate of rice, naan, salad, and your choice of curry. I've mostly ordered the Peshawari chicken, which is wonderfully flavorful with a spice level that it always perfectly calibrated to my order (i.e., pretty spicy). I also enjoyed the mysteriously named "Chicken Curry," the flavor of which is much less bland than the name. The rice, naan, and salad all complement the curry well, with the salad notable for it's wonderful dressing and a generous helping of diced cucumbers and tomatoes. The place is clean and functional, albeit a not terribly exciting busy strip mall location. The parking lot is not the easiest to manage, but that's a minor concern for such delicious Indian food.

We waited for a few moments by the entrance, and then we were seated at a two top next to the raised tables on the carpet. We ordered samosas, Naan, Chicken Saag & Mango Chicken. Dal: We were gifted two small cups of dal (lentil soup) with fresh cilantro. It was not as flavorful as it has been in the past, so we added salt and pepper, and that brought it to life. Samosas: Delicious! They were on the smaller side, but the tamarind sauce was delightful. - $4.99 Garlic & Cilantro Naan: Great and reasonably priced - $3.99 Chicken Saag - Spice level 4 - pretty hot, very tasty. Chicken and spinach in a rich sauce. - $15.99 Mango Chicken - Spice 4 - pretty hot, slightly sweet sauce and very flavorful chicken. - $15.99 Basmati rice: fine :) Glass bottles of water were placed on the table immediately, and when we finished one, another one was brought over right away. We appreciated this! There is plenty of parking in the lot. The could-be-better: The service was rather uneven today because there were only two waiters for the whole dining room and they had to seat folks, bus tables, handle to-go orders, and wait on tables. They definitely need more staff on weekends. As a result, the service came across as a bit gruff and harried. Our table near the carpeted seating areas was a little too small for all of the dishes, and when our used dishes were not taken off of the table, it was quite crowded. Additionally, when families arrived who needed to sit at the tables on the carpet, we were surrounded by people taking their shoes off, and it felt awkward and uncomfortable for a few minutes. We were just about done with our food when the families arrived, so we left shortly afterward, but it could be a bit much if we were there longer. There should be a "please wait to be seated" sign by the front door so customers don't walk into the restaurant and stand around by the desk, and crowd the folks who are already seated in the dining room, or worse, pounce on a table that someone else is waiting for. Overall: The food here is good and reasonably priced. I will probably opt for take out more often than I dine in going forward (just to avoid the crowds), but I will be back. This restaurant feels authentic and genuine, and I like supporting family-owned businesses whenever possible. Mahalo!

I wouldn't expect to be so stunned by mushrooms of all things (I can only think of one other time and beer batter was involved then) but they're wonderfully seasoned and have unexpected crunchy bits. We completely cleaned the plate, scooping up all the spaghetti squash accompaniment. Our mains were also delicious, a fava bean and a lamb entree with cabbage and lentils as the sides. Since we were going to be in Hillcrest, we chose Khyber Pass - and wow, what an incredible decision. This was easily some of the best food I've had in a very long time. We started with the Bolani. Absolute perfection. It had a beautiful crunch, perfectly seasoned filling, and none of that sogginess I often run into with Bolani elsewhere. We could've ordered another plate and been thrilled. Next came the Aushak with ground beef: one of my all-time favorite Afghan dishes. Think of it like delicate leek-filled ravioli topped with savory meat and tangy yogurt. It hit all the right notes. We also shared the Kofta Kabob, served with grilled vegetables and fluffy basmati rice. The seasoning was spot on, and the meat was juicy and tender, similar to Persian koobideh, but truly memorable in its own way. Our server recommended the Afghan Yaghoot Chalao (Cherry Curry) with chicken. Yes, cherries! Sweet, sour, rich, bright. I had to resist the urge to literally lick my plate clean. And then: the Qabuli Palao with lamb. I do not like lamb. My friend loves it, so I agreed...and I'm so glad I did. I genuinely loved this dish. The saffron-coriander rice with carrots and raisins was aromatic and comforting, and the lamb was tender and flavorful. If you're hesitant about lamb, trust me, this dish might convert you. Portions were generous, we came hungry, and still left with leftovers. I also ordered the house-made Doogh, a mint yogurt drink. It's not for everyone, but it's pure comfort to me. We finished with hot tea infused with cardamom, black for me, green for my friend, and it was the perfect close to a perfect meal. I told our server that this food was even more delicious than what my mother makes. I'm Afghan born and raised in San Diego. That is not a compliment I give lightly. I believe the restaurant is under newer management since around 2020/2021. I last ate here in 2015, and even back when it was on Convoy in the late '90s, and this is the best it has ever been. I highly, highly recommend Khyber Pass to anyone: adventurous eaters, first-timers, comfort-food seekers, well everyone. I'll definitely be back, and next time I'm saving room for dessert.
