We went to the India Gate last night for some birthday celebrations with a group of friends. We have all been here before on several occasions but this will definitely have been my last visit ever. The food took about 45 minutes to arrive, which I can accept on a busy Saturday night and for a group of 8, but the quality of the food was just abysmal. Amongst the dishes we ordered were a Lamb Dansak, a Lamb Rogan Josh, a Chicken Malai and a Chicken Sagh. All which vary in their degree of hotness with the Sagh supposedly meant to be mild. It became quite obvious that after our first mouthfuls of food that the dishes were far hotter than we expected, even the Sagh left us with a nasty afterburn and being unable to taste any of the other flavours in the other dishes. As I noticed that 5 out of 8 of us were struggling with our food I told one of the waiters that we were unhappy with our food as we weren't able to finish our dishes. We were offered a Kurma dish to cool the heat, which we weren't happy to expect for two reasons: a, it might just be another hot dish (which it shouldn't be, I know) and b, we just didn't want more food as our taste buds had been scalded but the fierce chilly burn of our dishes.
I then asked to speak to the manager who insisted that the dishes were perfect as apparently he had tasted every single one of them. He basically wasn't willing to accept that we were not enjoying our food and hadn't been given what we'd expected, i.e. a nice curry of acceptable hotness, which we had sampled before in the very same restaurant on previous visits. We were apparently the first out of a 120 customers that night to complain and he became quite rude and did not apologise a single time for the fact that we were not enjoying our dinner. What has happened to 'customer is king' these days? He again suggested some free drinks or desserts and I explained that we simply just didn't want anything else. After about 5 minutes of a rather heated discussion we settled for the drinks being taken off our food bill, still without an apology for the bad experience we had had. Before returning to my seat, I made it clear that I would not be returning to his restaurant upon which I was told by the manager that "he would not be serving me again anyway". I think that just says it all. read more
