5/5 Independent Dairy is an awesome old-school Monroe gem that has been around since 1934! You can feel the history as soon as you walk in, with the vintage look, old photos and classic ice cream counter. We stopped in with a party of six and the service was excellent. Everyone was friendly, helpful and incredibly quick. The ice cream was delicious with tons of flavors, huge portions and very reasonable prices. They have cones, sundaes, shakes, malts, floats, soft serve and more. They also have a drive-through and a small old-school supermarket selling milk, drinks, snacks and groceries. Such a cool and unique local place. Great service, great prices and great ice cream. We would absolutely come back! read more

5 stars since the scoops are scrumptious. They have been doing this for decades and doing it deliciously with extra nice staff that moves folks through the line and they even have a drive-thru. They will do your banana split in the traditional way or let you mix it up your way. Great prices. Love the old store venue vibe. read more

First time here because they're listed as selling bubble tea. When I arrived they don't do milk teas. They simply add boba bubbles to some tea. That's kinda lame. One star off for that. How does a dairy NOT do milk tea? Or milk cap? Cmon. It's so easy. And delish! So I ordered a strawberry banana smoothie and it was delicious. Real fruit. Very flavorful. No artificial flavoring. Real milk and ice cream. Perfect thickness. Hit the spot. I love that it has a drive thru. read more

Pretty good for Monroe. The location is a pain to navigate and find parking in. They only have one parking lot for both the commercial trucks AND retail customers. Needs a space to park the trucks off to the side when summer comes and people want to eat onsite. The ice cream is fine, the parking lot stinks. read more

The ice cream itself is great. But the banana splits contain no bananas. Not a sliver. Some dreadful looking old mushed strawberry but no banana. A bit of whipped cream but no banana. Three smallish scoops of ice cream but no banana. read more

When the only other person in a mask is a young lady behind the ice cream counter, you have the idea that their idea of good caring customer service has not caught up with the reality of the times. They do have a sign about social distancing on the door and some marks on the floor but that is all. The other employee didn't have a mask on. Too bad since their ice cream is so good. First place I have found banana ice cream in Michigan. Lots of other flavors that will make it hard for most to choose quickly. The prices are not bad either. But I will not come back. If you have a high risk person in your life, I wouldn't risk it either since when you wear a mask, you cut down on the chance of giving the virus to others. I came into this store and was very shocked at what one of the employees in particular did!!! Nicole decided to leave during such a busy time and seemed to not care about her coworkers whatsoever and then comes back and reeks of cigarettes and I get migraines due to scents. the worst part was she also did not wash her hands at all after being at god knows where! read more

Inauspicious outside reveals an amazing ice cream shop, around since 1934. Many classic and interesting flavors. Pleasant efficient service, and portions a good size. Very fresh and worth a stop if you are in the general neighborhood. The convenience store has minimal basics. read more

I went back a few days ago hoping for a better result and it sure was. This time I dealt with a pleasant upbeat person her name was patty. She was working on the other end of the store when she saw me she dropped what she was doing to help me. She was very helpful and friendly a much better experience thank you. read more

Talk about omg dairy options and flavors! There's a reason this place has been in business for so long. The hard ice cream is some of the best I've had. It is on the pricey side, I paid 9 for two cones. I wouldn't get it daily, but it's a must go stop when I travel to Monroe. read more

While the ice cream here is good, service has consistently gone downhill to the point of being awful. I went in a couple of weeks ago to get three arctic blasts, spent $20 on the ice cream and every single one was made completely wrong. I called to ask if I could get a refund and was told to come in to ask, and if I didn't want to come in, I was told I could have my ice cream remade. So, I went in to ask about a refund and was very rudely told no, and was asked if I wanted my ice cream remade, I said no not right now, and left. I returned about a week later and was told by the only EXTREMELY unprofessional adult "I can't remake your ice cream because I already threw the paper out after you asked about a refund." All in all, this isn't a business I'll be supporting again, learn how to treat your customers, and how to not be rude while doing it :). read more

Went here with my family and not a single dairy free ice cream option available. . There are dairy free pre packaged ice cream bars that you could at least carry. Won't be back as it's NO fun sipping water when everybody else is eating ice cream. read more

For an iconic ice cream place, it's not that great, surprisingly. I had a cookie dough blast (McFlurry type deal) and the cookie dough was definitely old, and had hardened. I tried it again about a month later and it's was about the same disappointment. Due to its proximity of my home, it's convenient to stop in and keep trying new things. My wife had their version of Rainbow Sherbet (her favorite) a few times last year in hopes that it was just an old batch but it's sweetness is just off putting for the expected fruity tartness normally associated with rainbow sherbet. I would absolutely not recommend trying the rainbow sherbet. However the "Superman" is a classic and tastes like Superman should taste! I will probably keep stopping in and trying new flavors, but so far I am unimpressed. read more

My family live within walking distance of Independent Dairy. They have a very large selection of awesome ice cream. My personal favorite is chocolate covered strawberry. All the ice cream rocks and at prices and portions that are very generous for the dollar. They also have a small convenience store inside as well with beer and lottery tickets if you are so inclined. Terrible service I just walked in here only one other customer and one employee. I was never greeted nor asked if I needed anything I waited for 5 minutes by the ice cream counter to try and experience what I was told was great ice cream. I will never know, and I will assume that it's nothing special. That's what happens when nobody cares about customers, and in business it starts from the top. read more

there are a lot of ice cream flavors available and i sampled the pistachio almond and birthday cake, but ended up sticking with the classic cookies and cream. the pistachio almond was really good, and i wish i would have gotten that instead because the cookies and cream ice cream wasn't that great. the ice cream was REALLY soft so it melted really quickly and just didn't taste as good as it could have. the portions are huge and a single scoop was only ~$3 with tax so it's definitely a lot of bang for your buck, but i'd rather go to washtenaw dairy in ann arbor for basically the same thing but better tasting ice cream read more

It was 19 degrees outside, and I was craving some ice cream on my drive home. A little strange, but Independent Dairy is one of the rarest ice cream shops to be open throughout the winter. The building is old and dumpy on the outside, with a crumbling parking lot. But, it's very clean and maintained on the inside. They have a smaller grocery section off to the side too, which is great if you want to just pick something up while you're getting ice cream. They have a ton of options, and it's very affordable. I ordered a large limited-time-only pumpkin pie soft serve in a cup (to eat easier while driving), and it only cost $1.85 for a huge pile of ice cream. read more
