I was traveling with a 97-year-old colleague and friend, and I contacted the hotel two weeks in advance to clearly explain that we would need extra assistance. Despite that notice, Marriott did essentially nothing to prepare or to support us once we arrived. From the moment we pulled up, we were treated as if we didn't exist. The valet and front entrance staff repeatedly failed to acknowledge us or offer help. I was left holding my 97-year-old companion's arm while managing two suitcases, trying to navigate doors and the lobby on my own. Occasionally someone would appear at the door, but most of the time it was just the two of us juggling everything. It was humiliating, and completely avoidable given I had warned the hotel in advance. The lack of care continued throughout the stay. When I called to have room service dishes collected, I was spoken to rudely and told to put everything outside the door myself--even after I explained I could not safely manage that while also caring for an elderly guest. Our room was never cleaned for the entire stay, even after an initial interaction with housekeeping. We also did not receive fresh towels despite requesting them. It was obvious that the accessibility/support needs I sent in writing ahead of time were never communicated to the relevant teams. On top of that, the Wi-Fi was unreliable. I reported the issue immediately, was told someone would follow up, and no one did. When I called again the next day, I spent roughly 40 minutes troubleshooting, only to have reliable Wi-Fi for about one day. Traveling with someone of this age requires patience, planning, and basic human compassion. What we experienced instead was disregard. Given how thoroughly the property failed to provide the most basic service--despite my outreach two weeks ahead of time--I am seeking a full refund. I would not recommend this property to anyone traveling with elderly relatives or anyone who needs accommodations or extra support.

However there are two things I want to point out: - In-room coffee is one of the greatest advances of civilization in my opinion. Who wants to leave a hotel room or early in the morning to satisfy a caffeine addiction? Yet time and again, you find that hotels provide a Keurig capsule machine, and only one capsule. Such was the case here, and even the friendly Dominican staff that I cornered was not able to supply any extra capsules. The front desk staff pointed me to the restaurant attached to the lobby - could they really be renting me a $250 room and going cheap on Keurig capsules to try and drive business to the restaurant? One hopes not. How absurd is it that I took 2 minutes to cross the street and buy a few capsules at the Ultramar gas station? Kind of absurd. - This is a completely smoking free hotel, which is also very civilised in my opinion. However, there are balconies at the end of each hall where smoking is apparently permitted. Definitely it is done, and it is a fact that the air intake for my room sucked up some of that smoke and deposited it inside my room, the stale smell of cigarettes and probably a little bit of their harmful chemical contents. Seems like a good idea to go 100% smoking free, 100% for real.

I was told no manager was available to help me and that I had to suck it up, so I went to a different hotel at 3am just to get a room to sleep because I was not able to deal with the odor. Completely unacceptable room to have passed housekeeping. I ended up being out of pocket for the second room. The manager then called the other hotel and gave out confidential details about my reservation that I did not consent to. Also completely unacceptable. When I came back in the morning, I was given a new room and the manager on duty at the time said he would investigate and get back to me. Now that I checked out three days later, I'm still waiting for that a manager to get back to me. Again, complete incompetence for a manager to not be able to resolve a customer complaint. Last, for the duration of my stay, I did not get any housekeeping despite asking for it and I had to run to the front desk multiple times to get towels and toiletries. A hotel should sell a room that doesn't stink, give towels, and resolve customer complaints in a reasonable time frame. Three things that this hotel failed to do. The manager I spoke to at checkout was also useless and continued to make excuses for violating confidentiality and made no attempt to rectify the fact that the first days of my vacation were ruined because of their incompetence, and that I had to go back and forth to the front desk at 2am to get toiletries and towels because they couldn't even do basic housekeeping. A completely incompetent team at a hotel that I will never stay at again. I hope you don't either. Manager had no discernable contrition over his team being completely useless.

For my three-night stay, it was just about perfect. Far more impressive than the room itself was the staff, particularly Evan and Amine who I encountered many times during my stay. While searching for a table in the dining area on my second day, Amine called my by name to escort me to a separate eating area the hotel opened up for overflow. Moments later, Evan came in cleaning the room, asking where I was visiting from, striking up a very pleasant conversation, and taking a genuine interest in my travels. Both of them turned an ordinary trip into something more special. On the third day, when I came down at the start of breakfast, the waffle maker supplies hadn't been set up so I asked Amine if they didn't offer them on Mondays. He immediately got the supplies and started to prepare waffles for me. As for breakfast, the buffet is good - yogurt, hard boiled eggs, breads, bagels, and fresh croissants, cereals, waffles, scrambled eggs, fried potatoes, and veggie wraps, along with bacon and sausage, and oatmeal with a variety of add-ins. All of the items I had were quite tasty and staff made sure that items were constantly replenished and that tables were cleaned. Finally, the location is great. Downtown Montreal is walking distance. There are plenty of restaurants, parks, and places to see and visit either in the immediate area or a short drive / ride away. While I was a little nervous about access to my car through the valet, it never took more than fifteen minutes for them to have my car parked in front. Overall, it was a great stay and I can wholeheartedly recommend the Fairfield to anyone visiting Montreal.

The TV in the room was disproportionately small and their streaming channel options were limited, but I made the best of it, as it's mostly background noise while I'm working anyway. The location is decent, only a couple of blocks from the Rue Sainte-Catherine shopping and dining area, which also has the Complexe Desjardins (a mall). There's a Metro station a block away as well. One standout was the gym, which is much better than what you typically find in hotels, with multiple treadmills, a stair stepper, ellipticals, and a solid selection of weights. They also have a two lane indoor pool and an indoor hot tub, which were nice added amenities. I especially appreciated that my room had a patio, it was great being able to get some fresh air. The only downside was the noise. There were very loud neighbours in the hallway with screaming and music playing until around 11:30 pm. I contacted the front desk and was told security would be sent up, but no one came and the noise continued past midnight. Overall, a solid hotel with great amenities, but the lack of follow through on the noise issue was disappointing.
