We came here to watch JR De Guzman. Tickets are super reasonable, however, I didn't particularly like the 2 drink/item minimum per person considering we just had dinner before the show. Not much has changed about The Houston Improv. They still offer great shows and great service. However the food, well, that might not be as great as everything else. The drinks are OK, not as strong as I would like for the price, but it will quench your thirst I guess. The food was not terrible, but edible enough so that you don't have a growling stomach during the show. They only offer bottled water for a steep price, which I honestly don't remember how much but don't expect a glass of free water! LOL Overall, of course, I'll be back to see another great comic, but next time I'll allow myself some extra time to go eat elsewhere. read more

Visited here for a Comedy Performance late on a Sunday night. I had driven by this spot for years and was happy to finally stop by and see what the building with the big IMPROV sign visible from the Katy Freeway had inside. The venue is spacious and has many tiered tables for groups of 2-4 to view the stage. I absolutely enjoyed Ralph Barbosa's performance as well as his openers. The lighting and acoustics were great. They have table service with waiters who quietly come throughout the performance. We were able to order a couple pitchers and wings for a late night snack, which tasted decent and came out hot. Overall, service was fairly prompt. I would definitely come back here for another comedy show! read more

My husband and I had a great time at the Ralph Barbosa show. We sat in the section close to the stage and the tables were a little crowded together, but there was still more room than at a traditional performance venue like Cullen Theater, where people are elbow to elbow. I didn't have time to eat before the show and thought I would have to "settle" for venue food, but the chicken strips (I highly recommend the honey sriracha sauce), fries, and fried pickles were all really fantastic. Everything was so crispy! I had a paloma and it was really good: generous pour and a decent size for the cost. The prices for everything was slightly more than what you would expect to pay at a bar but less than airport prices, if that makes sense. The service was also great. The servers deserve a LOT of credit for navigating through the maze of tables and keeping track of everyone's order. Our server greeted us as soon as we sat down, came to take our order quickly, the food came quickly, and he checked on us regularly throughout the show. A couple things could have been better but weren't a huge deal: the carpet in the aisle was really sticky in one area (I think someone spilled a sugary cocktail there at some point) and almost pulled off my shoe! They forgot to bring me a bottle of water but I was easily able to get one from another staff member. However, I guess they didn't communicate with my server so I was charged for two waters. The paloma was enjoyable but I wish they had more options for non-sugary cocktails. All in all, it was a nice time and I'm looking forward to going to another show at the Improv soon (so I can get more chicken strips and fried pickles haha). read more

Yeah!! The comedy club is back in business and they have some good comedians coming through. Ordered tickets online, so that was a breeze. Checked in and host took us to the table - again, very simple. Tables are currently more spaced out then they have been in the past - love it, but less tickets available for super popular comedians. Two drink minimum per person, so know that in advance. All drinks count, so even though my partner ordered water & soda, it was fine. I had some fun cocktails and enjoyed them - decent pricing too. Only bummer... we had "talkers" next to us and when we stepped out to ask if anyone could help with getting them to stop so we could hear the comedian, no one could assist so it made it hard to hear all the show. I understand you can't control the audience, but it did put a damper on the whole evening. (also - WHY does anyone go to a comedy show and then chat with your date DURING the performance?!) Came here to see Russell Peters. The doors open over an 1hr in advance of the show, and it's first come first serve depending on your section, so I recommend getting there early. The food and drink options are quite mediocre, and the service isn't super attentive either. There's also a 2 order/party minimum. I'm kinda sad Houston is so limited in comedy show venues. Aside from local bars that have comedy night for amateurs, this is pretty much the only location for comedy shows where you'll catch the more famous comedians. It's not that this particular location is terrible, it's more the practices. It's recommended that you show up 45 min- an hour prior to your show to check in and get assigned a table. It's first come first serve as far as how good of a table you'll get. The bad part is that they don't actually let you in til your show is set to start, which means you kinda have to hang out and wait outside for a good hour. Most people don't leave, since it's kinda hard to get good parking again. If you're a girl wearing heels trying to look cute, this is a big inconvenience. As others have mentioned, the fine print states that there's a 2 item minimum per guest. The cheapest item you'll find for food is about $7 and that's fried pickles. From my experience, and I've tried several things, the food is not worth it. Not to mention, service is usually quite slow and the food is usually barely warm by the time it gets to you. I usually go to dinner before or after and get 2 drinks instead. Mixed drinks are $10 and up and they're not super strong. Overall, despite the poor quality of the food, I would frequent this place a lot more if they didn't have the 2 item minimum. After you add the electronic ticket fee of $5 per ticket, you're forced to buy 2 overpriced mediocre items, pay a 18% service fee with your food items (not to be confused with gratuity), add an additional tip, and have to wait an hour outside, you realize there's way better options with that kind of money. The times I've gone, it's only because I'm a big fan of the headliner and suck it up with all the fees imposed. read more

Always have a good night at the Improv. This evening we came to see Jimmy O Yang of Silicon Valley and Crazy Rich Asians fame. He was very good as were his two opening acts Victor Tran (as MC) and Derek Keener. We had VIP section seats, which are just a closer section and still first come seating. This did come with a meet and greet after the show though. Several things to know: 1. There is a two drink per person requirement. Not a problem for us but FYI. 2. Seating is mostly four tops so if you don't have four in your group, someone else is likely going to join your table. Again, you can make the best of it or not. 3. Wow - Their standards for food have fallen big time! The drinks are spot on, with great taste and not just alcohol. We tried 4 different items, and only the dessert was of real flavor and taste. The real suckage came from the spinnach artichoke dish... A watery flavorless goop with some stale chips... REALLY!!! Come on, you can do better for $10+!!!! Then we tried the chips with queso and salsa. Folks, I know you can pick any salsa, but at least find something with a bit of heat... and cold queso doesn't work... So many of the people around me left soooooo much food behind, it was awful and sad!!! The comedy was outstanding!!! The opener was exceptional and even went above and beyond the expectations... There is a two order minimum, and drinks are pricey. We had the virgin strawberry daiquiris, which were good but $6 a pop. The nachos were decent, and my husband said he enjoyed the salmon, but if we had time, I would have preferred eating before coming and just having a snack here and not an actual meal. This rating is solely based on Improv theater and not at all on the performance. The couple of times I've been here the performances have been pretty awesome. Guy Tory was AMAZING and was hysterical the entire time.. Now for the Improv theater itself. It's just not ideal. Both times I have been here with one other person and they basically cram you where they can fit you. Most times it's at a small table with another couple and it just turns out to be super awkward. Everybody knows that I love me some improv comedy club. Overtime I have seen: D-Ray, Tony Roberts, The Plastic Cup Boyz and last night I intended to see D.L. Hugely. We got tickets to the late show 11:45pm after a long day of events so we expected for it to start on time considering it was so late. We saw the line forming while inside of Big City Wings and once it began to move, we went and got in the line. We came inside and waited an entire hour standing and finally had enough. You could hear D.L. Hugely still running his mouth on stage way over the time from the previous show. Lol. I was so upset with him. This was not the improvs fault at all. They don't even do refunds but the manager was nice enough to refund us considering the circumstances. We would have been leaving at like 3am . I don't hang out that late anymore honey D.L hugely would have been watching me sleep at the table in the front row. Lmao I'll be back for a show that starts earlier. All of my previous experiences here are great . I won't let this stop me from coming back to one of my all time favs. read more

Wow...it's been about 4 or 5 years since I've been to the Houston Improv Comedy Club and the quality is gone done A LOT. Let me start my saying I've advised my friend to dispute her credit charge-- because we were overcharged by $15. (and I'm not referring to 18% gratuity). I attended an event with a friend, and had 2 Gen Admin. Tickets for a "celebrity" event. We arrived about an hour before the show. As per usual, audience members are sat as they arrive. There had been a VIP option for tickets too... But, I was very happy with our center stage seats just a few rows back. The service was friendly but not attentive or skilled. I should've known I was in trouble, when I had to explain what a White Wine Spritzer was to the waiter. I am sympathetic to the venue being open during Covid times. However, the service, food, and cocktails were not good. I just expected more from this established business. Especially paying $98 for two tickets, and then receiving a bill for $96 for subpar food and cocktails. Their website advertises a full food and drink menu. We were only offered a very limited list of deep-fried appetizers. It was like some sort of nightmare from Restaurant Impossible or Bar Rescue. All of the food tasted like it it had been fried an hour earlier, sat in a warming tray, and then was zapped by the microwave before it was brought out to our table. I don't send food back -- but this was the exception. We had to send back the inedible, rubbery Chicken Tenders ($11) and cold Fries. The Coconut Shrimp ($12) was a disappointing serving of four overcooked shrimp on a bed of cold fries too. My Honey Tea/ Jack Daniels cocktail ($12) filled 3/4 of the glass and was barely served with any ice. Oh, and the aforementioned wine spritzer was also served in a soft drink glass with barely any ice?!? Thank goodness the show was enjoyable. I'm glad we attended. But I will remember next time I'm headed to the Improv to eat before hand somewhere else! read more

Four of us had a great experience there on a Thursday night watching Ryan Long (big fan, knew it would be a great show). Previous reviews had me dreading the food and drinks, but we arrived early to snag a good table, so we had dinner there, and it turned out the food was really good. We got the pretzel bites appetizer, the sliders, and the coconut fried shrimp. The pretzel bites were delish, the sliders were on some sort of sweet rolls and were very tasty, and the shrimp was also good. The fries that came with the shrimp and sliders were nothing special, but they were hot and salty and I enjoyed them. We didn't get fancy drinks, but the beers were cold and the glasses of wine were quite good, and I thought everything was reasonably priced. read more

The location is awful, uninspiring, the interior is not better. If that's not enough to turn you off of this place, make sure that whoever you come to see is someone that you absolutely love because you're going to need to get something out of the experience. The food is so awful I can't explain it. Everything comes out cold, it's extraordinarily expensive, and you have to buy a minimum of two things off their atrociously priced menu to watch the comic that you've already paid to see. Please let me emphasize you would be better off drinking the two items. And even that it's going to be so expensive. I went to see one of my favorite comics and the person I went with, we ended up spending $150. And that didn't include the comic. Imagine paying that much to break your teeth on their cold rock hard chicken strips. They added an automatic gratuity of 18% so make sure you mean to tip more if you do. The comic that I went to see made a joke about the club and then was super uninspiring. I could tell he did not like Houston or something because I just saw him in Arizona and he was on point. Also, super, super casual. We dressed up in Arizona and everyone else was dressed up with us, here it looked like people were going to eat at Chili's but with worse food. Visited the Improv for the first time to see Ms. Shirleen (The Christi Show). Due to Covid-19, as soon as your ticket is scanned your temperature is taken. You are allowed to enter and escorted to a table. The main area is nice with seated dining tables. The layout of the room allows for a good view of the stage from just about every seat. They have a decent food and drink menu (no vegan options other than salad and French fries. Waiters/waitresses are assigned to every table to take your drink and food orders. Masks must be worn while entering and in the establishment and can only be taken off while eating or drinking. There is minimal to no social distancing between tables. The show and experience overall was great. It was just nice to have an outing and be around people. Come ready to laugh, eat, drink, and have a great time! read more

We got in fairly quick (everyone else was already in 30 min before the show even started). We didn't have any food, but we did order drinks (2 min per person). I had a pitcher of shock top, sans oranges until I was halfway done. The pitcher is rather small for $20. My wife had a mojito which she said was ok $11 and a bottle of water for her second drink $4. Anjela Johnson was ok, her bit about he assistant went too long and kind of fell flat. This place will nickel and dime you, turn your pockets inside out and flip you upside down. This was our first time at a comedy club. We were honestly impressed with how nice it looked when we walked in. We were greeted very nicely by a gentleman as soon as we walked in. He directed us to the theatre. Again, we were really impressed with the decor and ambience of the venue. They were playing hip hop music which I LOVED. Thankfully it wasn't some boring old music. The place was nice, but we were went on a Sunday at 7 pm and they closed off half of it but we were at a tiny table right on the stage. We were there about 30 minutes we they said you would all be sharing tables, wish they said that ahead of time. It was a table for 2 and we had 4 grown adults crammed in. I loved Titus and his opening act Rebecca I think. Not sure being crammed in will have me return. Otherwise the show was great and mostly friendly staff though you have to order 2 things and gratuity is forced in, meaning they don't need to bother with you or be nice.
