Tonight I witnessed first hand how an ER can be run so piss poorly, that I would choose to drive 30 miles to a podunk hospital than ho to Trinity Rock Island as a walk in patient. A 40 year old male presenting with left side abdominal pains just below the ribcage, low grade fever, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, panic attacks, loss of appetite, vomiting blood, chest tightness, b/p of 158/98 at 180 lbs pulse of 100bpm, and fainting spells sits for 30 minutes when there are only 4 others waiting and an empty parking lot showing that there is no way that in an ER with atleast 20 bed could be full. The receptionist, who is lucky I missed her name tag or I'd call and raise hell tomorrow with their HR, was rude as hell. When taken in for triage to find out the chief complaints of the patient (I went in as a witness), patient was handed a specimen cup and told that if he was able to fill it once he was sent BACK to the waiting room, that would help speed up his waiting time, he filled it after another 10 minutes in the waiting room and passed it to the desk woman. After another 45 minutes he was called back for blood draws. Sent back out to wait again, and an hour later he decided to go to a smaller hospital half an hour away the following day, and just be in pain that night. He was wrong for leaving, but when you feel like absolute crap, you're in pain, haven't been able to eat, or sleep well, for 2-3 months, explain it to someone and get nothing in return, your anger can take over and you do counterproductive things. I'd rather be beaten half to death with a bag full of rocks than have to walk into that ER. Ambulance rides rule there.

I got my nurse right away and she took me to a private room, did some vitals and asked why I was there. She really listened to what I said. I then waited for the doctor to come in. Although it took an hour and a half for him to show, the nurse checked on my a couple time making sure I was okay. Doctor really listened to my needs and talked me through the next steps I would need to take in the morning. Overall a great experience (for an ER trip)! Wheelchairs up front, some are skinny, some are big. How can you tell ? I could not,,, There is a brake system behind the back top of the chair, or it does not work, you gotta see and read the small print AND instructions on it ??? Can you sit in it and operate it... Later that night of surgery they wanted to get her up to walk, it had now been around 15 hour and still no one had gotten her up to walk. also thru the night they only gave IV pain meds but the chart says to alternate between IV and oral. Also she left room to get a scan and when she came back to the roon no one hooked up her IV, we she to ask twice before some one came in. Everything just moves so so slow. There was minimal communication through MyChart, just barely enough and in technical (not patient friendly) language. One nurse was kind (hence the two stars), but it wasn't enough and I'd say most of the people I've encountered here, including the security guards at the entrances, were unpleasant. I definitely would not recommend this hospital unless you know or have a recommended physician or unless absolutely necessary. Even though it seems like a huge system with much invested into it, the patient focus and caring (at least from what my family and I experienced) were not there. The bills I received from urgent care for myself and family members also seemed excessive, more or comparative to other systems with much better quality (at diagnosis, speed, and patient care).
