They are a leather making school which I think makes it even better. They have a showroom full of different items from purses, wallets, belts, and jackets. Everything is carefully crafted and handmade. No two are alike. I was looking for a crescent brown shoulder bag which they did not have at the time. I ended up going with a different brown bag which I love!! I also purchased a belt for my boyfriend. Any product you get there you are able to get initialed. If you pay for your whole order in cash you can also receive a slight discount as well. I personaly know the product is a little bit more but for the uniqness and quality I think it is well worth it and the best souvenir!

So leather goods are very popular in Florence. The best place to get leather items in Florence is from Scuola del Cuoio. The leather is from Italy and the leather items are made on site by the artisans. The school was started by a family during WWII to help orphans from the war learn a trade. The school is still run by the same family and family members work at the store. The great granddaughter of the founder helped me with my purchase and was wonderful to work with. There are many leather market stalls around town that offer cheaper items but they can't beat the quality of the leather at Scuola del Cuoio. It might cost more at Scuola but you can rest assured that you will have the best quality product. I ordered a custom handbag so I could pick the type of leather, color of leather, color of hardware and also have it embossed inside with my initials. They estimate that custom orders take 5 months but mine arrived in 4 months. I also purchased a wallet and a crossbody bag off the shelf while I was there. They help with all the VAT paperwork so getting the VAT refunded was very easy. When we go back to Florence, this is a place I'll be visiting again!

Several of the designs in their window caught my eye so I returned first thing the next day. Their shop has 3 unique leather techniques I have not seen at any other store. I love the feel of soft smooth leather, but usually find leather heavy, especially if it has a basket weave pattern since that doubles the weight. BG has 2 patterns that look like a weave- one a geometric square pattern, the other a raised "pinch" pattern, but are actually cleverly sewn from a single piece of super soft, thin leather. Their 3rd weave pattern creates these gorgeous optical illusions of 3d circles/waves. I was blown away by the craftsmanship, thr lightness of the leather, and the gorgeous colors- classy greige and powder blue, rich burgundy, evergreen, and navy, and luxurious gold and bronze. BUT I didn't want to get carried away and blow my budget before checking out the rest of the city. So I left and started looking. Basketweaves were all over Florence, of varying colors and qualities. But nothing like the 3 I saw at BG. I went back this time w my motherinlaw who has much more experience in high end luxury names and products, and she immediately declared the quality of the leather and uniqueness of their patterns a definite buy. Paulo was so helpful, quoting her an amazing price (similar to many prices we had heard from sellers of products at the mercato stalls without the same quality, workmanship,or guarantees. In fact, she decided to custom order her bag for the colors of her choice in the design she wanted. While she was deliberating, I wandered into the back and found- their amazing leather coats! A super classy reversible 3/4 length deer suede/leather jacket w an intricate mandarin collar and cuffs using an alternating basketweave. Gorgeous! flattering! Buttery soft and light as a feather! But then... Paulo showed me their piece de resistance, this gorgeous buttery white/greige 3/4 sleeve cropped jacket w this mod funnel collar- with their special geometric square pattern detailing the cuffs and collar. So gorg!!!! Yet again, I wanted to make sure I wasn't just being a rube from america... And I spend the next day checking out several recommended shops around Santa Croce, high-end stores near the Ponte Vecchio and... I even found a store that had attempted to knock off their pinch-weave and their optical illusion weave- but couldnt nail either look. The leather was too thick and bulky, the stitching on the pinch pattern was easily visible, they couldn't carry off the 2-tone weave so they did single color, etc. And believe it or not, they were asking the SAME price as BG! I also found another store that knocked off their black deerskin coat, but again they just didnt get the leather or the fit right- little details kike the pockets being way too shallow, and tightness at the elbows w movement.... And yes, asking the same price! So today, I ran back to BG ready to use up all my vacation allowance on clearly the best shop in town.... Sadly Paulo has left to attend his daughter's exams, which I thought was incredibly sweet, but his nephew was there to help me place my order. I had hoped to let Paulo know how much I loved the beauty of the design and quality of their family store, and how much I had appreciated his enthusiasm for showing all the products to my motherinlaw and myself even when we weren't ready to commit earlier in our trip. He was so kind and classy, and their products are really so gorgeous and incredibly fairly priced, that I'd easily be convinced to buy maybe one more thing if I wasn't literally leaving town before they open tomorrow! I am incredibly happy w what I ordered and we had been so enthusiastic, we convinced several of the people in our tour to come take a look and make purchases too!

What a fantastic leather store! We spent five days in Florence, looking around, visiting and…read morecomparing leather shops trying to find a medium-sized duffle bag for me and a small purse for my wife. So many shops with pushy and aggressive salesmen trying to pawn what seemed to be lower-quality leather products, but we avoided most of those. Some of the shops we visited based off previous reviews, and others we just walked into because they seemed worth checking out (and didn't have anyone aggressively trying to usher us in). We went into I Medici mainly because there was nobody outside the shop trying to drag us in--and the shop was located well away from The Leather School (be very wary of most of the shops in the square near The Leather School!) and boy were we in for a pleasant surprise! The salesman we saw the first day (we returned to actually purchase three days later) was very laid back, friendly, and basically just answered our questions and made a few recommendations based on what we described. He provide a pretty detailed explanation of the materials and process they used. I am not a leather expert, by any means, but the quality of leather here seemed on par with even that of The Leather School--but at half the price! The only difference we could see (and feel) was the bags at The Leather School were actually lined in leather, while the I Medici bags are lined in canvas with their emblem stamped all over it. I personally prefer the canvas lining. When we returned on day four, this time there was a friendly woman to meet us, and she immediately went and found a bag and purse that matched the sizes and descriptions of what we wanted. She was very patient and friendly, and explained the VAT tax refund process at the airport (only residents are required to actually pay this tax). We used the duffle bag to pack souvenirs we had already accumulated, and continued to add to that for the last ten days of our trip, and so far it seems very sturdy, but will follow up down the road with a review on durability. I highly recommend this business.

So I was delighted to see that they have a shop in Florence. As someone else noted, it's a nice small store, not a warehouse or whatever is shown in the business photo. The sales associate was super nice and not pushy at all. The Mister ended up with a gorgeous computer bag, and I snapped up a smaller version of my beloved travel bag as well as a few gifts. They do have more "modern" styles with bright colors and textured leathers but my advice would be to stick to the more classic designs and the muted colors - those are done with natural dyes and will last you a good long while. There's a lot of leather on offer in Florence and a lot of it is crap. The prices here are moderate and the quality is really good as my 10+ year old bag attests.

I love my stonewashed dusty rose hand woven leather bag. It honestly looks just like the fancy $3K Bottega Veneta bags. It's a medium parachute bag, that's super light weight and very durable. It's a good size, I can throw in my wallet, phone, a water bottle, and still have plenty of room for other stuff without any bulk! Roberta's brother is so passionate about designing the bags and helpful. He patiently answered my questions and explained to me to the process of stonewashing and distressed leather. He was really humble and not at all pushy, finally a shop owner that I can trust! I was able to haggle a little bit by 10% and paid about $150 or so. It was a steal! All of the bags are high quality with unique styles and vibrant colors. There are only a handful of shops that carry hand-woven leather bags and colors like dusty rose or mustard yellow (I was so close to getting another bag!). While everyone raves about Benheart, they are seriously missing out! You are paying for the brand and nice show room than really the product. Roberta's also offers a much more authentic experience and better styles for a fraction of the cost! Given that there are over hundreds of leather shops in Florence, the fact that Roberta's comes up with 4.5+ stars on Yelp, Google, and TripAdvisor, is a true testament of their brand and high quality products. He is an awesome dude, he knows his stuff and he was a great deal of help to wife in finding the right fit and style for her. He genuinely wanted to guide her to a selection she loved, not just liked, and he never once pressured us into a sale. We spent maybe 20-25 minutes and having my wife try on jackets, and ultimately she came away happy with a handsome black-colored jacket. The jacket itself is quality leather ("baby lamb" as Johnny said) and is a traditional black with two solid green lines traveling down each arm. It is very soft. Zippers, pockets and lining are intact and functional. On top of everything I mentioned, the jackets were ticketed a certain price (~1200 euros) but we were given - and ultimately paid - 65 or 70% off of that. I thought it ended up being fair for the value of the product. It's all the real deal. If you're in the San Lorenzo area and are interested in finding a high-quality jacket with a store that has PLENTY of styles and sizes to choose from, I HIGHLY recommend you stop at Jimmy's.
