Food options abound. Small and expensive plates at the Cultural Village, with better options in the fair's center & back areas.

Have visited a number of state fairs over the years. If you didn't grow up on a farm they're interesting and educational. You needn't have a farm interest to enjoy a state fair, however, because plenty of free and paid entertainment is available. The Illinois fair is smaller than its neighbor's in Sedalia, Missouri. It offers two distinct benefits: family-friendly convenience and better proximity for St. Louis area residents. Most Midwestern state fairs can be easily covered in a day with a plan. The Illinois fair is closer for St. Louis residents--90 to 120 minutes away versus 3 to 3-1/2 hours to the western side of Missouri. That makes a fairly easy day trip. The compact layout of the Illinois fair packs a lot of family-friendly activity in a smaller footprint than Missouri's. That's helpful for families of small children. The distant Conservation World is a hike from the front entrance. A free tram cuts down in the walking and there are many activities there also for the kiddos. Lastly, fair costs are very reasonable and outside the for you'll find varying but affordable prices for close parking.

I have been to 8 state fairs in my day, including this one. Illinois currently sits at #3, tied with Indiana. It's vast and has a lot to look at, but here are the reasons it does not compare with the Big E in New England or the Wisconsin State Fair: -most of the food is that carnival food truck stuff that is at every midway and fair across the US. Its all the same. There was one place that did the unusual stuff like fried Twinkies and fried green tomatoes, but that was it. The little cultural area with foods from across the world was a little tame, I would have liked to see more unusual offerings. There was a tent that offered fresh corn and watermelon and that was great though. -buildings are sort of everywhere. Even with a map it is hard to plan out a good route to take and even though we went two times and took the little trolley around I still feel like I missed some things. -there is no souvenirs at all. Yes one building sold State Fair t shirts, but it was one design and pretty boring. -if I am not mistaken, Illinois is the #1 state for soybean production. And I saw almost nothing talking about that. It's like when I went to the Iowa State Fair - land of corn - and literally the only thing there that had anything to do with corn was buying a corn dog. Is this not an agricultural event? I dont get this. Pros: LOTS of horses, nice arenas to sit and watch the judging of animals, beautiful conservation park with a lovely pond, lots to see and do. Parking is very easy. Cheap entrance fee. Very clean and excellent service by the employees. People watching was fantastic. 8/10 I would go again for sure.

My family and I have been going to the Illinois State Fair for YEARS. It's a summer staple event for us but after this year, we will no longer be returning. The Fair has changed soo much. My FAVORITE thing here is the ENOURMOUS GIANT YELLOW SLIDE. The tickets are now $5 a slide and those steps to climb to the top are quite the workout but well worth it. Another favorite is the Whole ear of corn dunked in the hot butter $5 an ear, the tub of freshly fried mini cinnamon sugar donuts, walk and around to compare prices but either way you're going to pay either $17 or $18 for the tub, worth EVERY penny and the fried cheese curds, now this item you have to be really careful, some vendors say tub but it's actually a tray, an over priced tray. Besides my favorite items there is a good variety of food options from turkey legs, burgers, ethnic cuisine, corn dogs, fried oreos, ice cream, fried twinkies, fried candy bars, chicken kabobs and more. A hit around the fair were jars of tea, which come in multiple flavors as well as lemonade in a jar. Of course there is alcohol available wine and beer. The Illinois State Fair use to host waaaaaay more vendors, there were so many open areas where vendors were once housed. In addition to food, the fair offers a plethora of rides and various vendors selling t-shirts, wacky candy apples, hats, boots, a safety tent, a highway patrol tent, live auctions, tattoos, jewelry and more. My family really enjoyed visiting with the live animals, the cows especially, touching them, learning about them and taking pictures with them. Very beautiful and gentle animals. There are plenty of parking options from residential lawns to business lots that are reasonably priced. There are port-ta-potties available as well bathrooms inside some of the buildings accessible to visitors. Check out the dairy tent which houses multiple sculptures made of butter.

We had a great time at the fair. Ate a lot of delicious jumbo corn dogs, roasted corn, ice cream, turkey legs, and deep-fried Oreos. I must say deep-fried Oreos are deliciously sinful! I was lucky to pet many beautiful horses in the stables and watched the horse riding competitions. I was in love with the white goats with black faces and heads - White Sox colors! We also paid for grandstand seats to watch country singer Miranda Lambert put on a great show that evening. The 300 lb Butter Cow is a must see tradition since 1922.

The Illinois State Fair is not bad. It's actually pretty large compared to other fairs I have been to. The rides in 2008 were not impressive. A lot of kiddie rides for the most part. The food was typical of a fair, greasy corndogs, anything on a stick & other junk food. The exhibitors were interesting, but nothing spectacular. Overall, not much different since last time visiting over a decade ago. Don't miss the lesbian parking on the north end. They were extra friendly & cheap too!

Bathrooms are terrible. Extremely unclean and not well supplied. Dirty floors. The worst aspect of the Illinois State Fair.

The Native American artwork was one of my favorites. I enjoyed seeing the beautiful beadwork. They did not have the theater showing anything the day that we went. So I would love to go back to see their theater. They often have kids events, so check their website to see if there's any special items going on. The basement level is a hands-on kids area for kids to play and explore. They also take donations since admission is free. I definitely plan to go back again.

Review Visit: July 31st, 2012…read more A museum dedicated to more than Illinois. Matt and I had no idea what we were getting ourselves in to when we decided to check out the Illinois State Museum. We set our sights on this place while trying to do all the big Lincoln-y things in Springfield. We had assumed it was just your normal museum dedicated to the state of Illinois, corn, and Lincoln. It was all that and much more. It's hard to put in words how cool this place was. It's also hard because it's been over 8 years since we came here and my memory is a bit fuzzy on it. Who is to say the exhibits haven't also changed or been redone since 2012. Any who, I will say that if you find yourself in Springfield and love awesome museums, check this one out. There is a lot to see pertaining to Illinois but it's all so super cool and really well done. One of the best museums I've ever experienced. I know this is a shorter-than-normal post. If it gets even one person interested in seeing this place, then I feel like I've done a great job.
