Idyllic spectacularly old wine cave tucked away around the corner from La Taverna di San Giuseppe (which you must make a dining priority, if, say, you have any interest in delicious food whatsoever) in gorgeous labyrinthine Siena.
On this dreary, cold rainy late afternoon it was a refuge. I sipped a glass of whatever red the proprietor felt like serving me slowly. I feel like this is a good place to perhaps come alone and plot your takeover of the world (or, at least outline the plot of a novel you're about to write). Two extremely cool Bad Seeds-esque men were pouring wine and controlling the tunes. I mention this because imagine my surprise when Diamanda Galas graced the playlist. Although I don't speak Italian and they didn't speak much English, mutual appreciation was expressed.
I could have stayed here all night, but we had a bus to catch back to Florence. read more
