I love to cook so first order of business when I am here in Lucca is buy our groceries. We tend to overstock in USA but here just buy what you need for a few days so they are fresh. The chicken taste much better ; seems like not a lot of hormones and chemicals in their products. Milk are quart sizes not in gallons!! Prices are reasonable especially scondo/ sales items. If you are living from inside the wall it is a bit of distance if you don't have a car. You can go to smaller market inside the wall at Tambellini near piazza san frediano and anfitreatro. Smaller selection; that's all you need.

Good meal in the famous piazza…read more So many restaurants to pick from so it's hard to decide. This was a good pick tonight. We shared bruschetta and a Italian salad. Then our mains were a butter sage ravioli and porcini mushrooms pasta. All cooked perfectly and very tasty. Service by a young man was prompt and he was friendly. Second night in a row to enjoy dinner on the piazza so obviously we like the area. La Grotta would be a great choice to visit once again!

He guided us through a salami selection and made us taste different cheeses with assorted pairings. He then informed us of the different olives, tomatoes and breads. We walked away with salami, pesto, focaccia, mozzarella, olives, olive oil soaked tomatoes all for about 40 euros... we could not have been happier that we stopped in and were treated to his expertise! It was clearly a shopping spot for the locals and I loved that I almost never encountered a cashier who spoke much English. My intent during this trip was to practice my spoken Italian as much as possible and I was able to that here. The staff was friendly, accommodating and helpful. While Lucca boasts many small food shops and exquisite salumerie, there are times that a little supermarket like this fits the bill. The wine and beer selection was quite good. What was really impressive was the bottled water section. There were dozens and dozens of different types of "acqua minerale" con gassata or senza gassata...with or without carbonation. Italians take their mineral water seriously. There was the usual array of supermarket fare here, packaged meats, personal products, deli selections, cleaning products, canned goods, etc. If you had an apartment here, this would be one of your routine places to go. It was nice to have had this shop as an option for the few items we needed.

This is apparently a supermarket chain in this area of Italy. They have fresh bread, meats, fish, local wines and an area with cooked and prepared food to take home. While you can probably figure out most of what you're buying - if you can't read Italian - be sure to bring your translator. While most employees don't speak English, they were very helpful.
