I travel to St. Joseph for work at least three times a year and I come here every single time. Have been doing it for years. After today I won't be coming back. My work colleagues and I got sat and were informed of a long wait as there was only one server - cool. No problem. It happens. We are sitting about 20 minutes when a table of 8 gets sat next to us. The cook immediately came from behind the counter to bring water for them. We were still sitting there with nothing. Our server came over - apologized and got our orders and brought out our drinks. Our salads came out and all was well. Then we waited and waited. We were informed that one of the potato pizzas we ordered couldn't be made because they were out of potatoes. No big deal. We changed the order. Then the group next us - who came in 20 minutes after us and ordered after us all got served their pizzas(including a few potato pizzas). While we waited and was not served. Finally realizing that our diverse group of 5 was being shafted for the very non-diverse group of 8 we asked for our pizzas to go and we left. So if the intention of Il Lazzarone was to make us feel sidelined and "othered" - congratulations. Job well done. Because we left there being reminded of just how how bigotry feels. The pizzas was still great in my hotel room. But you will never see a recommendation from me or dime of my money again. read more

My hubs and I had a great experience at Il Lazzarone! The Neapolitan pizza was new to us. It's different than anything we've had. The waitress did a great job explaining and her recommendations were spot on! We started off with the bruschetta. It was very fresh and layered with flavors! We then ordered the Salsiccia Italiana (Mozzarella, Sausage, basil, olive oil, sea salt) and the Crepa (Mozzarella, bacon, basil, garlic, balsamic glaze, olive oil, sea salt). We both agreed the the Crepa was our favorite but they were both very good! The Italian sausage was very flavorful. We ate half of each pizza and saved room for dessert. Our waitress recommended the S'mores with added cookie dough. It was so yummy and worth the calories! We love supporting these type of specialty restaurants in St Joe. Super cute and intimate place with delicious food. I think it would be really cute for a date. We came with a party of six, got six different pizzas, and two appetizers. Not one item disappointed, everything was delicious. My favorite items were the Burrata, the Greco Formaggio, and the Margarita D.O.C. The server was great and the restaurant smelled wonderful. And since it's so intimate you can see your pizzas getting baked in the epic oven. This restaurant is an hour away from my home but I will definitely be coming back. read more

We were driving through St Joe and the request from the back seat was for pizza for lunch. I searched reviews and we decided to give Il Lazzarone in downtown a try. It wasn't far at all from I-29 and we were not disappointed. We were greeted by Courtney upon entering the business, quickly and thoughtfully seated in a quiet corner away from the potential drafts of the front door as it was cold outside. Her suggestions were spot on and we had the Ceaser Salad and Bruschetta to start. Healthy portions and fresh ingredients for sure. Then we had two pizzas and it was perfect considering we had a couple of big eaters and we were hungry. Prices are fair and reasonable for the quality and quantity. Plenty of parking off street, nice people, clean and hospitable. I highly recommend Il Lazzarone and we will be back the next time in the area. read more

Overall a pretty forgettable experience. We were greeted promptly, but not overly friendly or enthusiastically. The restaurant has a cool vibe, it wouldn't be until I tried the food that I knew why there was only one other table eating in the restaurant at 3 on a Friday. We ordered the bruschetta for appetizer. Probably the worst bruschetta I have ever eaten. It was all acid, my wife even remarked it was almost fizzy on her tongue. The only real flavor was a raw garlicky punch in the face. The bruschetta comes served on some pieces of their house made pizza dough. The dough itself is pretty good; however, it is a poor choice for a bruschetta vehicle. It becomes very soggy before it even gets to the table. Our pepperoni and hot honey pizza had ok flavor, but it was a little soupy in the middle. I'm familiar with Neapolitan style pizza, the crust had nice leoparding, but didn't taste burnt anywhere. Overall, the flavor of the pizza just seemed to be lacking. When I go in for Neapolitan style pizza, I'm looking for a soft crust, which has a crunchy exterior. Unfortunately, this did not hit that mark. Might try it again, but not until I give some other pizza spots in St. Jo a chance. read more

Il Lazzarone gave me some really great pizza. It's all fresh, the pizza is made right in front of you and there's a giant fired oven to cook it up. The pizza dough / crust was literally perfect, you couldn't ask for it to be made better. We ordered the Supremo and the Formaggio. The Supremo was my favorite of the 2. The only reason why I am giving 4 stars is because we ordered the La Rughetta salad and they forgot to dress it with the lemon and olive oil dressing, but our waitress was really kind and gave us a side of the dressing. But I will never come back here again because St Joseph is literally the scariest, creepiest town I've ever been to. Delicious! We ordered two pizzas and a Caesar salad. The Carne pizza and the La Rughetta pizza (we added balsamic glaze and goat cheese). Here's the run down, the crust was thin, but still had a soft chew, which was the perfect bite every time. The Carne pizza had plenty of meat with an excellent tomato sauce.This is a crowd pleasing pizza pie. I'm a sucker for prosciutto and goat cheese so when Hannah, our waitress, recommended adding the goat cheese and balsamic glaze to our pizza, I absolutely did. This was a smart move. The hubby and I opted to share the Caesar salad while we waited on the pizzas. The timing of the pizzas was perfect as we had just finished our salad. The staff was friendly and kept busy. The salads were fresh and delicious, the beer cold and pizzas ON POINT The staff was fun and engaging. We went during the day but I can see this industrial atmosphere amping after dark. I visited this restaurant with a group from work a couple weeks ago (3/19). The restaurant was pretty crowded and my group had to split up between tables but that was fine. The pizzas came out in shifts not all at once but that makes sense because I know the oven is pretty small. Our server was honestly probably the best I've had in a long time. She made us laugh, and stayed on top of things all night. She might have been the manager, I'm not sure. The pizza was pretty good. This would be a 5 star IF .... Getting there... We drove into what appeared to be an older part of town at around 6 pm on a Sunday night and saw that most all of the businesses we closed for the night. I commented to my husband that it looked like the streets were rolled up for the night. Looking around, I felt like I was in small town America with a small town population of 5K so imagine my surprise when I learned St. Jospeh boasts a population of over 80k. The Pizzaria... The inside of the pizzeria is cute with an open feel. The wood-fired brick oven is prominently displayed in the center of the joint for all to enjoy. We were seated quickly and had our beverages within a few short minutes. I think less than 5 minutes later, our piping hot pies arrived. I ordered the Carne (pepperoni, sausage and salame atop a San Marzano sauce). My husband ordered a pepperoni and sausage pizza. The pizzas are sized for one person and, although they look big, the thin crust makes them quite light, perfectly sized and well-seasoned. My only knock was that both pies were burned on the bottom which gave them a bitter flavor due to the blackened char. That said, the toppings were so flavorful and of high quality that I didn't mind the burn that much. And the sauce....Let's talk about this sauce. It is bright but not acidic, has a hint of natural ripened off-the tomato vine sweetness and a fresh flavor that kicks bootie! It is so good and it pairs beautifully with the cheeses and meats. In all reality, I should've had the pizza remade but I didn't. In fact, I didn't even mention the burned crust to the staff. So, IF the pizzas were not burned on the bottom, they would have had a solid 5 star rating from us. We don't get out this way too often but if we are ever passing through again, we WOULD stop. Every chef has off moments so I doubt we would get a burned pizza next time. Whether you live in the area or are merely passing though, put the address into your GPS and go get a pizza! Loved this place. We were looking for a lighter dinner option and decided pizza might be it. Glad we found Il Lazzarone. The interior was fun and hip with exposed ceilings and brick. It was an old garage so there was an old air compressor machine as part of the decor. We opted for pepperoni pizza and Caprese salad. Both were excellent. Great service! our waiter was super friendly and took the extra time to talk to us about their beers and wines as well as about their best pizzas! we were very excited with the service. the place is spacious and very hipster like, the vibe was very light and the place has amazing lighting super nice. Beer and wine, they have nice wine selections for all tastes even my favorite moscato was there, they also have some local brews and nice serving sizes for the beer. Salami and honey- amazed, not too spicy salami, not too sweet honey... the pizza dough was just perfect and the taste was very well balanced, this pizza was off the charts amazing. Crepa- the bacon is the nice and fatty parts, fried to perfection, the basil leafs could be tasted throughout the entire pizza ben though they were not overwhelming in green the basil was present and made its statement. I do wish they had at least one truffle pizza selection, but none the less their pizzas were impressive and I can safely say that I am in love with their flavors. Nutella- this desert pizza was pretty good, I do have some suggestions the you come and get it though, ask for bananas and strawberries on it, also they do place a lot of fine sugar on top of it and for sure the amount of sugar in it is definitely not needed, so skip the sugar if you want. this Special 10 dollars, any specialty pizza is 10 dollar, the special is posted right outside, I am not sure how often it changes but this special was worth it, cause this place is so goos they didn't even need a special. Awesome service, I am still super impressed with their service so I needed to mention it again! this place also has a venue in Kansas City by the market street so If you do not go to this one try the other location. We ate here twice in two weeks and had totally different experiences. Out first visit was great--which is why we visited a second time. Visit #1: Delicious River Bluff Brewery Robins Song wheat beer and, at our server's recommendation, the speziata mascarpone pizza (with added mushrooms). Divine! Delicious crust and toppings! Visit #2: We wanted the exact same pizza and beer; however, that was not to be. They rotate what beers are on draught, and we were out of luck. We had Summer Shandy instead...meh. We ended up with the margerita mascarpone pizza instead of the speziata, and it wasn't nearly as good. The crust was burnt on one half of the pizza. Our server offered us another pizza-- on the house--but we declined because we were traveling and still one day away from home.
