We've all heard the comedians and men dragged around the store by their significant others joke, complain and moan about Ikea, in fact my husband and his best mate ring each other and say 'Guess where I am?' every time they get taken along to buy some home furnishings and whatnots.
My nearest store in Warrington. There's a good sized carpark that gets full at weekends and evening when I am there.
LAYOUT
Toilets as soon as you go in and a creche. You can either go upstairs and see livingrooms, kitchens, study, bedrooms and childrens (there's some fake room set ups to look round, handy for ideas, as well as smaller items in baskets to buy), or nip round the back of the stairs and you'll find the 'market' where basically all the items you can fit in trolleys or big shopping bags are. There are 1000s of items on sale, homewares, door handles, candles, cutlery, bath towels, bedding, window furnishing, plants, toys...not to mention actual furniture for every room in the house plus the garage... it would be impossible to list them so check out http://www.ikea.co.uk if there's something in particular you are looking for.
PAYING
The main complaint by the jokers and Ikea mockers (and me!) is the ridiculous sized queues. I have never ever been to Ikea, done the shop and gotten to the tills to find them all being manned. Even on bank holidays and sale periods. To me this is just ridiculous, especially if you get to the till with only a bargain can't leave it behind vase or candle, and the extra curtain rings you actually went for. Ikea have installed self service tills, but whenever I'm queueing or using them they flag up for the assistant which is very annoying and holds everything up.
COSTING AND RANGES
The plus side is the amount of items you can pick up on any budget. My sister was moving into her first home, and I went with her armed with a list of furniture she needed (and a teeny budget) and we got everything far cheaper than we expected- all things she liked too, nothing bought just because it was the cheapest. Sofa, coffee table, lampshade, tv unit, shelf unit, wardrobe, bed, 2 bedsides, dining table and 2 chairs all for under £1000. She had enough leftover to get mirrors, pictures, ornaments too. I personally buy from the leksvik range which costs a little more but is antique style on a budget, with pieces that can be used throughout the home so you get a sense of unity. The larger Leksvik pieces cost circa £100 each but last longer, are better built and as I said their are pieces for every room in the home. There are more expensive ranges, but as these were out of my price range I couldn't and didn't consider them, didn't tease myself looking at them, so can't comment on their value for money and quality obviously, but an educated guess I would assume they are better quality, more popular with the public and more stylish.
CONCLUSION
So if you don't mind queing and are like so many are on a budget, Ikea is a great destination. read more
