This was really disappointing. People were not friendly, even kind of mean. What a shame.

    Ask the Community - IKAR

How comfortable a community is it for someone NOT in their 20s and 30s (which is how it's been described by many in their reviews), but for someone in their 60s?

It is totally comfortable. I am in my 70s and there is a very active group called the BOOMERS (formerly called the ALTA ROCKERS) and we are very involved in all sorts of social action, community organizing, green action and social activities. One… Read more

One of the most important aspects to us is seeing how much our children love their teachers! Every aspect of how a child develops is incredibly considered, thought-out, and seamlessly integrated into their daily learning. We are so proud to be a part of this one-of-a-kind, supportive community.

This burden is transferred to parents: we're…read moreasked and expected to provide classroom essentials -- pencils, paper, markers, cleaning supplies, etc. -- through teachers' Amazon wishlists. Each week, our daughter was asked to come with money to pay for school-wide events, usually to buy Dollar Tree junk food -- a transparent effort of the school to raise much needed money. Volleyballs (the only feature of the "athletics department") are misshapen, lopsided and ripping at the seams. What's more, every water fountain is broken and students are discouraged from using the restroom In groups as a way to avoid high water and power bills. Aside from the more obvious signs, the lack of funding is even clearer behind the scenes: the school holds a "Teachers Matter" fundraiser because the school can't afford to pay its teachers what they deserve, and we parents are asked to contribute even more to teachers' paychecks. In fact, almost everything about the school is a fundraiser: Parents Night Out, pep rallies, school plays and the Cultural Heritage Festival. The only thing more lacking than funds at St. Tim's is the school's leadership. We're so happy we finally left.

I thought this was my own unique experience but turns out, it's not! The Cheers analogy is a common one when describing Pressman. Pressman is a place you walk into and feel as though you're receiving a warm hug. You'll know your kids are being cared for and cared about, thought of, and raised in a way that feels like an extension of your own home. More than a school, Pressman is a community. Head of school Dr. Rothblum is a role model, and her kind, strong leadership and dedication to learning is apparent at all levels. Pressman was one of the first schools in LA County to receive a waiver to return to school onsite during the pandemic which was no small feat and took careful planning, imagination, and fortitude. She is involved in making carline run smoothly, ensuring adequate security around the building. She knows the name of every child. She's an inspiring leader for the parents and the kids. Watching her speak to kids is like watching a magical wizard. The kids are engaged, listen, follow directions, and learn. I remember being a kid and feeling despondent on Sunday nights, the "Sunday blues," knowing I'd have to go to school the next day. My kids do not experience this. Quite conversely, they ask if they "get" to go to school. They have developed a love of learning, an affinity for the classroom and for their community. My kids will look back at their childhoods with warm memories of school, which makes the money worth spending.

The teachers have been attentive, creative, and caring. My daughters also made wonderful friends and even in the midst of a pandemic our family had a sense that we belonged to a community.

--- As a child, I…read moreattended this school in third grade and had a teacher named Miss Killian (spelling may vary). She was the most abusive educator and individual I have ever encountered in my life. Recently, I saw a news story about a teacher who forced a child to duct tape their own mouth--a shocking incident that made headlines. That is exactly what this teacher did to me. She was a physically imposing figure, over 400 pounds, struggling to walk or sit, yet possessed a voice that could shake a room. If she caught me talking, she would unleash a violent scream and apply excessive amounts of duct tape over my mouth--sometimes as many as ten strips, depending on her level of anger. At times, she would force me to tape my own mouth while aggressively throwing my desk into the hallway. As a result, I developed a chapped ring under my bottom lip from the repeated abuse. I never told my mother because I feared I would be the one in trouble. This teacher targeted me specifically--I wasn't talking to myself, yet I bore the brunt of her cruel punishments. It became impossible to make friends after being relentlessly humiliated in front of an entire classroom. The psychological and emotional damage has stayed with me for life. I deeply regret not speaking out sooner, and I shudder to think of how many other children may have suffered at her hands. Given her age and health at the time, I doubt she is still teaching--or even alive. However, this serves as a crucial reminder: parents, pay attention to your children and their teachers. Educators hold the power to shape a child's future, but some, like this woman, wield that power to destroy. --- .

Rabbi Weinberg is also a Lawyer, and Rabbi Rosenberg is a very experienced Rabbi from New York which is always a good sign. The Cantor Brice Megdal was excellent--what a great voice and energy. And Dr. Sarah Sela, a Gastro. Probably the friendliest leadership you will find and very different than most of the Temples in LA that have elitist attitude and not very welcoming, especially if you are single. You will feel very comfortable here Single, Couple, or Family. Everyone is down to earth. What they are looking for are congregants that willing to be a participant as opposed to just paying dues--although they can certainly use dues. Instead of "build it and they will come," here you will help build it and participate. And they are open to all kinds of suggestions if you want to be a leader, a friendly open leader. Like a start-up. People come here from far away because of the comfortable atmosphere of collaboration and cooperation. All ages are represented from Teens to Seniors. If you email Rabbi Weinberg, get ready for a quick response from him--he is very "hands on." I personally had the opportunity to talk with him for the first time before services and immediately you will enjoy his company. He is not only well versed in religious rituals but experienced in law and life and very approachable. It's not easy to find someone like that in a temple in LA or really anywhere. The only thing is that at the Rosh services--too much Hebrew for me--I just don't have that skill, but I am eternally grateful that they invited me when no one else in LA would. If you can read and understand Hebrew--you will be right at home. BTW: If you have any social networking skills--they can use an update to their website as well as promotion to new members on Facebook. Facebook needs to be a key part of the growth of this institution IMHO. No problem parking on Crescent Heights--just watch for cleaning day. They also have their own parking lot. Nice building, great area.
