After being a customer for over 15 years, unfortunately I will no longer be returning to Mouna's…read moreshop. This is now the second time I've spent hundreds of dollars on a hairstyle from this shop that I genuinely hated.
The first set of pictures is from my first experience. I paid over $300 for French curls for my birthday. I had never had this style before, and by the SECOND DAY the hair was already badly matted. When I spoke to Mouna about it, I was told it wasn't good hair. My question was: why wasn't that communicated to me beforehand, especially when I was sending pictures of the hairstyle I wanted? Had I known, I would have chosen something different. That experience was so disappointing that I stopped coming for over a year.
I eventually decided to give the shop another chance because I had been going to Mouna for so long. I booked boho braids and specifically chose Mouna as my braider, but when I arrived, Mouna wasn't there.
I purchased the hair directly from the shop. This was NOT outside hair that I brought in. They charge $80 per pack, and altogether I spent around $400 on this hairstyle.
I'm unhappy with both the hair quality AND the execution of the style. Most of the boho hair is concentrated at the top, while many of the braids only have one curly strand toward the bottom. My hair looks very thick at the top and extremely thin toward the bottom. It barely gives me the full boho look I asked and paid for.
I haven't even had these braids for THREE WEEKS and the curly hair is extremely matted.
This is not from a lack of maintenance. I regularly comb and detangle the hair, sleep in a bonnet every night, and use the recommended products. Mouna recommended additional products, so I went out, purchased exactly what was recommended, and used them. The second set of pictures shows the current condition of my hair, including pictures taken only a couple of HOURS after detangling and applying those products. The hair was still matted.
At this point, I don't know what else I could reasonably be expected to do. I understand that boho braids require maintenance and curly hair can tangle. But there is a difference between normal maintenance and constantly having to detangle severely matted hair that isn't even three weeks old, especially after paying $80 per pack for the hair.
I also tried numerous times to contact Mouna through calls and texts. The responses I received were very short, and I did not feel like the actual problem was being acknowledged. Eventually, I had to physically go to the shop to discuss my hair because I wasn't getting anywhere through calls or texts. Even after going there, I still left without a real solution.
I was told they have been using this hair for years and haven't received complaints. That doesn't change the condition of the hair that was sold to me and installed in my head, which can clearly be seen in the pictures.
What disappoints me the most is how this was handled. There was no apology, no acknowledgment that the hair quality could possibly be the issue, and no real solution offered. I didn't immediately leave a negative review. I called, texted, followed the recommendations, spent additional money on the suggested products, maintained the hair, and even came to the shop in person trying to resolve it.
I have supported Mouna's business for over 15 years and have referred people to her shop, which is why this is especially disappointing. I gave the shop another chance after my first bad experience because of that history.
After all of that, I'm left with a hairstyle that cost me around $400, isn't even three weeks old, is extremely matted, and doesn't have the full boho look I asked for.
After two experiences like this and the way my concerns were handled, I will no longer be patronizing Mouna's shop.
