Some how Idylwilde had fallen off my radar. I used to drive there specifically as a destination store years ago. But now that I'm in Acton twice a week, right around the corner, why am I not going there? Idylwilde is part farm stand, part gourmet grocery store, part garden center, part cafe. You can walk in, get corn stalks and pumpkins for your front steps, a cup of coffee and a gourmet baked good for a mid morning snack, and bring home bread, cheeses, wine and fruit for an evening picnic. I stopped in over the weekend. I needed fresh, vine ripened, heirloom cherry tomatoes for a caprese salad. I was able to find them. $1.99 for a half pint. While I was there I realized what a treasure I was missing. I feel like Idylwilde is the type of place- you cannot walk into with a list. You need to walk in with an open mind and let the products speak to you. I hadn't planned on toasted rye with goat cheese and hot pepper jelly for dinner. But that is what spoke to me last night!

Great all around store. Extensive selection of flowers & vegetables in the Spring especially. Only issue: very pricey.

Wonderful selection, very expensive. I saw tomatoes (admittedly very nice tomatoes) for $4.99 a pound.

The shop sells cheese (and they let you have samples), wine, and imported foods, but it also a full deli that serves sandwiches, salads, prepared food, and more. My mom is vegan but was able to make a very good vegan sandwich (hummus and lots of veggies), while I really really really really loved their French Picnic sandwich (French ham, brie, apples, and honey mustard on baguette). It was the best brie (and soooo much brie) that I've ever had and just a perfect sandwich. There was a little wait to order - it's a popular spot - but once our sandwiches were in a brown paper sack in our hands, we drove over to Walden Pond and enjoyed them there. What could be a more perfect lunch on a first visit to Concord than a great sandwich from the Concord Cheese Shop enjoyed looking out at Walden Pond?! I'd return for that sandwich - and next time I'm tasting cheeses, too!

Perhaps it was just the day as the street sale was happening and the store was extra busy but I got attitude when I asked about a certain type of sandwich and came close to making a retort that would have been embarrassing for me and the other person involved. I ordered and waited for my food, paid then I left. Sorry to say that I was dismayed but there it is. It was quite busy on the day and it seemed that crowd management could have been handled better. Perhaps when the store has its remodel the traffic flow can be improved upon. I've always enjoyed shopping here and would like that to continue..

This store has a well-curated selection of hard to find items ... lots of $12 ice cream and $5…read morebottles of soda ... which appease the Concord-ites in their $2 million houses. You can find things here that you can't find anywhere else. The best ice cream in the world is Mitchell's ice cream in Santa Barbara, CA. I have never seen this for sale outside of Southern CA ... much less in Massachusetts. I don't even mind paying $10/pint. Do yourself a favor and try it. (Just leave some for me!) The Chip Shop Curry sauce in the Irish/British section is also a fantastic item. You'll never think of Ketchup with french fries again once trying this cardboard tube of dehydrated crystals. And their selection of beers and wines at about 20% markup are pricey, but good. Bananas Foster Milkshake IPA, Blueberry Muffin Porter and obscure French and Italian wines? I'm in. I am not necessarily going to complain about the absolutely insane prices. This sure isn't Market Basket. Shit, even Wholefoods rolls their eyes behind this store's back when they see a half a tuna fish sandwich for $14 or a $6 single wrapped non-descript oatmeal cookie. You know what you are getting into when you pass through town and see the perfectly landscaped 1700's giant houses with their 'activist' signs in the front yard, that look like they came out of a Pottery Barn catalog. You know ... Stop Global Warming ... yet consume ice cream that traveled 4,000 miles across the country in a refrigerated truck. What I don't love is the pre-made foods ... from the sandwiches to the baked goods to the entrees aren't that good. How can one go wrong with a $12 'authentic' Jamaican jerk pasty? When it is bland, tasteless and contains two small scraps of meat, that's how. In a moment of weakness, I splurged on a $8 piece of pie that tasted of little more than shortening and cardboard. Overall, it's clean ... it's immaculate ... and it's well curated for the well off. It's 20-something year old workers, who clearly would rather be at Dartmouth gathered around an ice luge made with Fiji Water, will one day be able afford the trappings of $40/lb. Stilton cheese and $12 per ounce pimento cheese spread. But in the meantime, they aren't that helpful or interested in customers. Who can blame them? Hedge funds and derivatives are so much more interesting than Naples tomato sauce and organic laundry detergent. Would I come back? Yes ... for the 5 or 6 really cool things I can't find anywhere else and cannot live without. A raging coke habit would be less expensive than doing one's regular grocery shopping here. But ... you never know what oddiments you'll find. Just keep in mind that a $20/lb. cold cut really is just a cold cut here and many of the crazy expensive deli, bakery or cheese items here aren't that amazing despite 70% of the world needing to take out a mortgage to buy a roast beef and asagio cheese sandwich on sourdough here.

They sell the homemade soups and salads and bread and stuff that they sell in the first floor. We actually stayed for lunch here on the second floor there's a little. Café that you can sit and have lunch in overlook the main part of the store. Everything is made in house and their dips and soups etc. Would like to come back sometime when we have a bit more time to look. I do have a great variety of food, though that I will say I think this would actually make a great trip to walk around and stuff with us a lot of historical things to see.

Their chicken sandwiches are good, but I always get a bowl with either chicken thighs or steak. They have excellent sauces and the food here is really good, albeit a bit on the saltier side. I stopped by Family Delicatessen on a Saturday and ordered the Green Goddess, a vegetarian option with hummus, avocado, apple, and lots of veggies. I will give them credit: they did not skimp on the veggies! However, there was not a whole lot of hummus or avocado so it kind of just tasted like eating veggies on a piece of baguette. A very good piece of baguette, to be fair, but I just wish there had been a little more flavor. The deli itself is very cute with lots of imported Italian foods, like unique pastas and sauces. Service was speedy and super friendly. I definitely need to go back to give them another chance!
