We had a few quotes to have a fence installed. They were all about the same in cost. Why we chose Ideal Fence. Mark took the most time to measure and look at the property. He talked to us about fence options and styles--the other contractors did not. We need a privacy fence installed around the back of the property, which is on a sloped hill. We also needed to have a surveyor out to mark the lines. Mark was great to work with. Once we had the property lines set, he came out the next day to review it and look for potential issues, like a tree in the middle of the line. Everything was worked out and they came two days later and put the entire fence up in one day! The gate is made to fit after the fence is up, which was installed a few days later. My parents had a fence installed by Ideal and it was disastrous. First the tops of the fence were first in stalled with panels different heights. I now live in their house a walk around the yard and see the shitty job they did! After about a month panels of the fence blew over!! All sorts of framing on the panel and they don't match up or there is none at all. Not sure just how long ago it was installed but within 5 years. I called them for another piece to be installed for more privacy about 5 panels. So they came and my intention was to show them the imperfections. I certainly wasn't going to let them do the work. When they arrived I showed, I think it was Ed. He first blamed his brother's crew and tried to say they didn't do that part of the fence!! Make a long story a little shorter! This was a $30,000.00 fence and the quote to extend it was $6,000.00. I know prices have gone up since but REALLY?! I would never use them again. Let me end with this. The manager came to our house 5 times and still had problems following our intentions. They did not mark where posts were going prior to starting the project and this led to confusion. When the error was pointed out, they handled it in the most unprofessional, belligerent manner that I have ever had with a contractor. I would not recommend them to anyone wanting to install a fence. read more

My first review! A fence company. Nice. Last year my dog was in the backyard, saw another dog up the drive and across the street, ran up the drive and across the street to accost the other dog, and got slammed by an SUV. Sniff. It was horrible. He's okay now (see my next review: Emergency Vet), but it was something I definitely did not want happening again. So I needed to fully fence in the backyard, including putting a gate across the driveway. I had no recommendations to go off of, so just called fence companies randomly from the phone book. Of the 4 places I got estimates from, Ideal Fence was not only the cheapest, but also the friendliest. Not a hard decision really. And it seems to have been the right one. Scheduling the work took awhile, because this was during the rainy season that was Spring 2006. Ideal Fence kept me updated all the way, till they finally came out and did the work. I never felt like they were putting me off. They worked efficiently, and again, were very friendly. They finished in the amount of time they had projected it would take. And the fence looks great. Horrible customer service. Upon installation did not have the correct gate. One month later, I had to call to ask when they were coming back. Clearly, it wasn't on their radar. I was told there was a five year guarantee and lo and behold a couple of years later I have a problem and I'm not getting any response from them. I set up an appointment last week for Mark to come out to a property I own today to give me a quote on a fence repair. We had it originally for 10 am, but he called me at 9 and asked to move it up to 9:30. I accommodated him and went out to the house just before 9:30. He leaves me a voicemail saying he can't find my street, that there are two streets by that name in Newton. (There, in fact, is only one street by that name in Newton; the other one in the area is in downtown Boston.) In a brief call, I confirmed the spelling of the street and gave him the cross street. He texts me to say he's sorry but he has to meet a building inspector at 10. No offer to reschedule. More context on this contact with Mark is important, and it echoes the experience of another reviewer posted here. When I contacted Mark last week to set up the appointment, he remembered having come out last December fresh after the tree damage to the fence. He never followed up at that time with the quote on the repair, so my recent contact was "Take Two" with Mark and Ideal Fence. I did this because another fence company had recently recommended them. I take it that they do great work, but it is sure disappointing and frustrating to recognize that Ideal Fence appears to treat fence repair as a low priority. I get it on a business level that they want go after bigger installation jobs but don't advertise yourself as interested and available to do repair jobs when you don't give that any real attention. I absolutely love my beautiful new fence from Ideal! I thought I had the smallest backyard in the world, and the fence actually makes it feel a lot bigger! The design is "neighbor-friendly" and provides security for my kids while simultaneously appearing airy and open. Out of all the companies I contacted (and there were many, initially) Ideal surpassed everyone else in terms of customer service. I am very glad we decided to go with them. Their team was also very patient and professional. There was an issue that arose during the installation their crew handled it extremely well and was very calm and helpful throughout. So I have many reasons why you should use Ideal Fence. But let me tell you what I learned after the fact of course. When you install a good wooden fence. You should understand where you're putting it. I installed 2 separate fences in different places. The one by my driveway and the other properties driveway. Is still in decent shape. But the one next to my garden and by the dirt walk way behind.. NOT GOOD! Especially on the side of the big tall building behind. So it was being held up with very strange objects! Lols! So at first I was like. No Ideal Fence. I talked to others. And the B.S. got spoken. This one company said his fence was special. Because it had steal or some metal under the vinyl. And Ideal was like I don't know about this. When I walked down the street I saw a Fence Man fence. And it wasn't very tall. And I just pushed it. And it didn't have metal in it. And Perfection fence. Gave all the promises. But I read the reviews. Nope! So then I was like I remembered what Ideal did a few years back. When the Gas station behind me did something to my fence. And then Ideal came over to fix it up. They didn't charge me for install. Just for the material. Now this project here. His men came over. And didn't rush around. They took their time and did the job properly. And they left the place very clean too! So I'm very happy to recommend Ideal Fence. $2700 dollars well spent. And if you message me I will suggest to you how I saved $300! read more

An update (from 6 years ago): I'm totally disappointed in Ideal this time around. I have since moved and wanted a new fence installed. I called up to have someone in to get a quote. The guy came in, measured, gave me a brochure, etc. He said I would have a quote in a few weeks. No idea why it took a few weeks, when it should really take a few days, but whatever. I'm still waiting for the quote, and that was 3 months ago (I even emailed explaining that I wanted to change something and never got a response). Thanks for nothing! We're going with a more "reliable fence" company. read more

Ideal came back to take out an old fence and replace with new to match fence they installed prior. All great. It looks like all the 1-star reviews on here actually never got a fence from Ideal - their issue is not actually about a fence but with NOT getting a quote or problems with appointment. I guess no one has problems keeping up with communications these days aside from Ideal and we should therefore try to 1-star them to death. I'd say 3/4 of my calls and texts to anyone under 30 these days do not get a response, so I am surprised hard-working good value folks like Ideal warrant this treatment. read more

Had to chase them down to get a quote and then when I wanted the work done they never got back to me. Go somewhere else, not worth the hassle So nothing overtly bad but just total lack of response from them. Ideal Fence was recommended to me from family. I called them to get my back yard fence repaired. After several calls I finally got Mark to come out to the house, see what work needed to be done. He emailed me a quote and I asked when we could do the work. He said he would get back to me. Several weeks went by and no word so I reached out again. Finally I got Mark on the phone and he said he was backed up with work and would get to it when he could. Called again, emailed again, no use. Still have a broken fence and have gotten no help. I believe you shouldn't have to chase someone down to give them your money. read more

Our wooden fence blew down in the wind from old age and rot. We decided to replace it with a white vinyl privacy fence and received multiple quotes to get an idea of pricing, so we knew we were getting a fair deal. We did not have a good experience with Ideal Fence. Our yard was 3/4 fenced in, but with a toddler we wanted to completely close it up. We have a small yard so this is not a big job. They were quick about giving us an estimate and taking the 50% deposit. They told us the fence would be up in 1-4 weeks, most likely within a week. After 3 weeks, we never heard from them, so we called to check in. They said they'd come the following week. We never heard back, so we called again and they said they'd come the following week. Finally, after we waited for 6 weeks, we called them again. "We can come tomorrow," they said. They did come the next day and the workers did a fine job. It took less than an hour. However, we were very upset that they took our money and kept delaying without even calling us to keep abreast of the situation. I'm assuming that since it was a small job, they kept throwing us to the bottom of the list because it wasn't a big enough money maker for them. We will not be using Ideal Fence again. It was frustrating and I felt we were treated very poorly. When we told them how we felt, they didn't really seem to care. Oh well. read more

I cannot evaluate the quality of this company's current work. It looks like others have appreciated the product. The fence we have was built 13 years ago by Ideal Fence, and almost all of the fence posts have rotted below the ground. In interactions with one of the owners (or perhaps he was only a hired employee?), I was very disappointed by the lack of service and the person's attitude and failure to respond timely. I had a white vinyl picket fence installed last year by Ideal Fence and a year later, I have to admit I am very satisfied with their work. We have a corner lot and the front yard is a little tricky with a double gradient. I had called up several fence companies and all their quotes came to around the same price, maybe a few hundred dollars here and there (barring Home Depot's quote, which was at least a 1000 dollars more than the highest quote I received from local contractors). I decided to go with Eddie (who I believe is one of the owners of Ideal Fence) because I felt he best understood the complications with my yard. I was not disappointed. His crew came in and did the work within a week of me handing them the job. They tackled the gradient and the corner very well and left me with a very sturdy fence.They even took pains to see that there were no openings left by which my dog could escape out onto the street. So, now I do not have to worry about inconsiderate people taking a short cut across my front yard or someone's dog pooping on it. But of course, my dog is free to poop on it as much as he wants! read more

I am giving Ideal Fence a 5star because of their followup/customer service. I have had them install fence in three different configurations around my yard. Each time adjustments needed to be made. They already had my money, they had already done the job, but yet they came in a timely manner and adjusted and fixed. They worked with me to make my requests seems reasonable (which might have seemed I believe a bit of a fixation to them!). Their scheduling is not perfect, but think of it as a collaboration - you have to keep checking in with them. It's worth it for their service. read more

I'm a bit surprised by the negative reviews because I had a great experience. I initially called Ideal Fence for a quote for a small back fence. I was afraid no one would want such a small job, but since my house is very close to their offices, I figured it was worth a try. The owner came to measure and give me a quote. Since it was a small job he didn't require a deposit but said they would then need payment on the day of installation (not a problem). The price was very fair. My driveway had just been re-asphalted, and he even mentioned that his trucks would be careful when they came. They came the week that they said they would, and the installation guys were very careful with the truck. They were nice guys, funny, and did a terrific job. Then we got to joking about fences being good neighbors and why didn't I want a fence on the other side to block some unsightliness in the neighbor's yard. I said I didn't want to be too boxed in (it's a small area), and that I wanted to be able to put some plants. He suggested a matching fence that could go only part of the way across and that would start a few feet off the ground so I could still have plants underneath. I liked that idea, so I had the owner come out and measure again. Within a few weeks they installed the other fence. Tonight I sat on my patio. Some people enjoy a nice view -- I enjoyed my lack of a view! My fence looks fabulous. I went to drop off my check the following week to their office -- you can walk around the factory floor and see samples of everything. Everyone was very nice to me. I was treated with respect, and I got a nice product and service at a fair price. read more

This company has done work for me two times so far, and every time has been professional and on time, at a price better than the competitors I called for quotes. They were able to install a vinyl fence that matched the wooden one that I had, that was rotting out. When they drove by today, working on a different job, the owner noticed that something on my fence needed to be repaired, so he called me and told me that he was sending guys to fix it. I saw this fence company on Angie's list and they had a great review so I called them and within a day they came to look at my fence, which had been slightly damaged from the winds of a hurricane. The owner of the company came to look and quoted me what I thought was a reasonable price for the replacement of posts, caps and bringing the fence back into good condition; this fence is 10+ years old... Honestly, I thought he would say it wasn't worth his time but instead he took my meager down payment and said that they would be back between 1-3 weeks depending on the weather, which has been rainy. I called the companies answering service, it was the beginning of the third week of the time frame set, last Tuesday and within an hour I had a call back from the owner saying that he would come by Friday if it didn't rain... Unfortunately, it rained on both Thursday and Friday and he called me on Friday to tell me he wasn't going to be there. Instead on Monday morning he called, showed up, and I have to tell you he and his assistant did an amazing repair job... The owner was actually working... He is a great guy, very personable and very thorough. I mentioned to him that his reviews on Yelp were not great which really seemed to bum him out. I told him that most of the comments where that the company did not get back to people within the allotted time set by Ideal and he in all earnestness said that they have been really busy and yet try to get back to everyone as quickly as possible, which was absolutely my experience. I had such a great experience with the Ideal Fence Company today that I made the commitment to come on here and say that they are great. I really highly recommend them, here is my advice... when the owner comes to quote your job and gives you a time frame for the job to be done by and if he isn't there by the third week or whatever he sets for your fence job to start by be patient, realizing that weather really affects the time frame that he initially quotes you, and do not be afraid to give them a call they are totally reasonable to work with. read more

I highly recommend Ideal Fence. I worked with Mark, one of the owners and he listened and was able to accommodate the design and installation for some unusual circumstances. The crew was top-notch: on time, polite, hard-working, meticulous and they cleaned up after the job perfectly. While I had been told that my job would be done in about six weeks after the deposit it turned out that they had an opening much earlier and they were able to come the day Mark called and complete the work. I heard great things about Ideal Fence, so I reached out to have an estimate done for our yard. It took four follow up calls over the span of three weeks to finally get something in writing, despite being told we would have the estimate in hand within a couple of days of the visit. However the estimate that was finally sent to us was incomplete--it was not the full scope of the project that was clearly explained to the rep on the day of the visit. Ideal Fence installed a beautiful white vinyl fully closed-in fence for my backyard and removed the old fence in 2 and half days. I only met them in the first morning before they started the job. Once they understand what I need, they installed the fence exactly the way I want. The price is good and there is no surprise when the job was done. They were very busy (summer 2014) I was told there are 5 weeks waiting period before they can start. I waited for more than 5 weeks, then I called Eddie, his crew came the second day. read more

Back around September I called Ideal Fence to get an estimate to completely replace my fence, big job. So you would imagine the comany would be interested in doing this. Mark came and showed me pics of the different possibilities. He came up with a great plan for my fence. I was really happy so I asked him to send me an estimate for that idea. We are now in February and I still don't have my estimate. Not sure what went wrong but disappointed after reading good reviews of this company. I wanted to stop by Ideal Fence on Saturday to get a price estimate for a fence. Their web site didn't show the hours, so I called them at 10:30am. A pleasant lady answered and said "We are open till 1pm today". Great! I hopped in my car and was at Ideal Fence in about an hour. A door marked with "For Customers of Ideal Fence" was locked. I thought maybe there is another entrance and walked around the building - nothing. I walked back to the door, pulled on the door knob again.. At that time a track came up the driveway. It had "Ideal Fence" sign on its side. I politely asked the driver why is the entrance door locked. He said, "I am sorry but we are closed on Saturdays!". I just stood there in disbelief. Maybe I misunderstood the lady? So I dialed the same number again, right from their driveway, and asked Till what time are you open? "Till 1pm today!" - cheerfully answered the same lady. Based on the review on Yelp, I called Ideal Fence for a gate to be installed in my alleyway. After a few tries with the answering service (you never reach the company itself), I got a call back and the man reluctantly agreed to come out and give me an estimate. Since he was so grouchy, I was cheerful and told him that I had heard good things about his company and was definitely going with him. He came at the appointed time, took measurements, etc. Said gate would be ready in about 4 weeks. Fine. Eight weeks have passed. I have left many messages inquiring about the status of the gate, but have received no call-backs, no news, nothing. Do I have a gate or not? I do not recommend this company. read more

We decided to go with them but now 4 weeks, 3 emails, & 5 phone calls later, we can't get a response from them. Not going with this company any more!! I called Ideal to replace a fence. The man was great in indicating it could be shored up for a few years and then replaced; he also took measurements to replace a gate. That was in the spring.. It is now the end of Sept. and although many times he said he would come... he has not. I am canceling the work request and would never use this company again. read more

I got four bids for replacing part of a backyard fence, and Ideal was the lowest (25% lower than the highest). Eddie was extremely knowledgeable and I felt confident Ideal would do a good job. The confidence was well-placed! Our fence was painted but we went with a stained replacement section. The stain matched the paint perfectly, and everything went super smoothly. The fence went up just when they said it would, the installation was professional and quick, and the result looks great. I usually don't write any reviews and this is actually my first review but I am so tired of calling Mark Nilan and getting excuses for not showing up to repair his extremely substandard job. We had several jobs done by this company including a $5,500 link chain fence job. The locking device was very poor in design so we have had troube putting a pad lock on it since day 1 but when asked, I was told that there were really no other options so we lived with it. Recently one of the posts came loose and i called Mark at least 6 times and he never showed up on any of the appointments and gave me an excuse every time so I have given up but I like others to know that when dealing with Ideal Fence, you are not dealing with a company that backes their job or even value their customers. The jobs have been very substandard with poor quality material and workmanship. read more

We had Ideal fully enclose our backyard with a white vinyl fence (they were replacing a terrible, falling apart picket fence). Weather delayed the process slightly, and we did call a few times to ask when the work would be started, but when the crew came they did a wonderful job.
