As you can imagine, that avoidance resulted in my needing an embarrassing amount of work. After having another dentist refuse to root canal the tooth she filled that remained painfully temperature-sensitive for MONTHS after the filling, Dr. Chowning gave me my root canal and all was well in my world. I felt zero pain during the procedure, and was actually kind of intrigued by the whole process. I even got to watch the machine cut out my new tooth! Hahaha. But since then, I've had some other work done there and I never feel like I'm being taken to the cleaners. It's also worth noting that he's had the exact same staff the entire five years I've been a patient. They've added a few people, but I don't think anyone has quit. No one ever seems stressed out or unhappy, which speaks volumes of the boss man, if you ask me. And the relaxed atmosphere goes a long way when you're at the dentist's office; anxiety is contagious. The mint on the pillow, though, is that they give you your own tube of lip balm for pretty much every procedure. They're just too great. I no longer hate the dentist.

This was a refreshing change from other dental work experiences I've had in town! So I made the appointment online. I am very glad that I did. I had been having some problems with my right side of molars and come to find out I had a cavity underneath my old filling. The dentist was so kind about it. She was not harsh at all like some of the other dentists that I have been too. I was also told that my medicine could also be causing some bone loss and to find some mouthwash medicine to combat the problem. After years of unhappy to downright terrible experiences with various dentists, I finally decided…read moreto try a private dentist. Now, I know that depending on your priorities, there can be some downsides compared to the corporate factories many of us are used to. Things can take a little longer at a private dentist, from appointments to the labs. However, I'm quite certain I know exactly how I feel about the other guys and so, I gave this place a shot. I had it narrowed down to two places based on reviews, and the Yelpers here won me over. The waiting room is small, but seats about 7 and on our first visit for new patient appointments, we had plenty of time to look around. I noticed water and coffee available, and there is a small play room off to the side. There is also a computer, but I'm not positive if it's for patient use or another one for the office. There was an article about how the name of the business was chosen and how even the décor is chosen with that in mind. My husband liked that a lot, it made quite the impression. For our first visit, I was 2 minutes late due to a new construction detour. I hate being late, and I felt really bad, especially since I know Saturday appointments are coveted. However, when I was pulled back 25 minutes after my appointment started, I didn't feel too bad. Appointment times run long here, so I didn't get my cleaning on my first visit, because by the time it would have started, the appointment slot was over and I had to be available for my husband's appointment (short term memory issues, I always have to get his treatment plan details). The other factor was that I was informed they always do numbing with needles during a deep cleaning and I just wasn't mentally ready for that. The appointments running long were completely worth it though. Dr. Lan is very impressive! I have never seen a single dentist be so thorough. Before even looking at your mouth, he studies the x rays and has the assistant enter in all observations, including all the work you've had done in the past and what materials were used. Then he looks in your mouth to verify his findings and then he designates potential treatment versus what should be watched. I didn't have any cavities this visit, but he did identify an older crown that may not have been seated correctly the first time. He put it on the watch list to compare in 6 months. The only thing that wasn't perfect about the consultations was I asked if they had their own lab and pointed out that some of the work they designated down the line for my husband would result in the lab needing to make a new partial. The tooth was on the treatment plan, but not the partial. I brought it up on the phone with one of the front desk girls and she just told me to discuss it with the doctor. This put me off since I did bring it up with the doctor and they were putting the ball back in my court to remember to bring it up again in 6 weeks (our next appointment). However, that was the only time that happened. When working on my husband's root canal on the next visit, Dr. Lan was training several assistants. Since he was explaining everything he was doing and why and how he prefers to do things (and I've sat in on quite a few of these procedures) I could tell he was much better than the last three dentists I had been to, and much more careful. He's so good that any assistant will be a disappointment because they aren't Dr. Lan, lol. I'm sure they will grow to be as meticulous as he is under his leadership though. When fitting my husband's crown several weeks later, he continued to display that same level of perfection and then did something no other dentist has ever done in my presence: ask my husband what his plans are and what kind of dental work he would want in the future. My husband and I have been together 17 years this month and this was the first time that has ever happened, I couldn't get over that. Despite being very impressed, I had kept my review in draft until I had my deep cleaning. I am not really comfortable giving a 5 star review until I myself have felt how gentle they are and what the residual pain levels are. Unfortunately 2018 was one of those years where we would make an appointment and then various family emergencies pulled us out of town during that time. This happened on 2 occasions and then we went through an insurance change. The staff was extremely sympathetic to what we were going through and didn't make us feel guilty at all or threaten us with fees for the cancellations. So that means I have to post this review from our actual visits, but I'm still pretty comfortable with this rating from only my consultation and the work my husband had completed. Dr. Lan is the best dentist we've seen in Denton and I can't hold back a star because circumstances changed for us. If we end up with insurance that we can use at this office again, I will be running back here!

I immediately note 2019 ???? I've been going to Vanilla DDS regularly since 2015. During my visit on Wednesday, he showed me a big dark cavity at the base of my tooth, then he said the good news. No root canal needed. However, it does need a crown as the solution. I've been telling them for years that I've had a bad taste in my mouth, and they said nothing about the cavity they knew was growing on tooth 32 since 2019. They left that decaying tooth in the back of my mouth until it needed a $900 crown instead of a $50 filling. I've also had other major work done with them. Not a word. Stay away! Unethical at the minimum, evil at most. I literally don't know what to say. No, I have to add this to my list of ways to avoid being taken advantage of.

However, there are things that may make this worth it to some people. Your information will be in the system if you need to go to Great Expressions in different cities. That has to be a plus for people who travel a lot. Though they recently went down to only one a month, they do have Saturday options, which I initially found appealing due to my work schedule. I didn't enjoy my experiences here and won't be coming back, but that doesn't necessarily mean it wouldn't be a better fit for you. I was pretty surprised at some of the things I was seeing, so I researched other locations and see they run the same way with many complaints being repeated by patients in multiple cities. For me, that's not the kind of treatment I want. This location does have a great dental hygienist with a great bedside manner named Sam, a very nice front office person named Morgan and an office manager named Chad that will take care of things, fix them, handle complaints, etc in a competent manner. For that reason, and the potential convenience *others* may find in them being a corporation, I gave them an extra star. However, no one at this location (and I suspect any location) communicates very well, it's up to you to ask a lot of questions, otherwise nothing seems to make sense. As a company they handle insurance claims completely different from every other dentist and specialist I or my husband has been to in 16 years. For me, this was not acceptable and a very big factor for not returning. In order to avoid being overcharged or receiving incorrect bills I had to call constantly, and stand my ground depending on who I was talking to. Previous dentists have quoted and billed insurance the first time and that's what I expect. This one was initially billing as out of network because some other department wasn't on top of the details I suppose. I also dealt with some employees being extremely insulting and condescending to me on this issue and claiming I not only owed this additional money, but even more. Also in regards to insurance, they do not actually talk to your insurance when presenting you with the estimate. They also insisted my insurance covered an expensive treatment that I know they do not. They also tried to insist I would have to pay a fee on something that my insurance covers at 100%. Lying? Maybe. Negligence? More likely. Therefore I strongly recommend you be vigilant. Unfortunately, I know my insurance and normal dental procedures intimately, so I was able to spot issues very quickly. When I went for my cleaning I was there for an hour and a half and left without a cleaning being done. Unacceptable. When I declined to do the more expensive treatment and asked that they please do the normal cleaning that I was now several months behind on, the dentist refused and actually tried to cite legal reasons. Then the staff claimed my insurance would cover it at 100%. Both of these things are completely untrue. This is the only dentist ever who refused to give me a cleaning at all when I wouldn't give in to their high pressure tactics. Apparently, it's better to get no cleaning at all then get what I scheduled my appointment for and give them less money. I was also left sitting in the chair unattended for 30 minutes after this conversation occurred. That is just wrong and again, there was no communication to me whatsoever. This is when I knew I wouldn't be back after we completed the work we needed done. When my husband got his work done, I was shocked to see the dentist give him multiple shots immediately without discussion. I've never seen anyone administer that many, even for really serious procedures in really sensitive areas. I was wondering if it was safe, but mostly it was the lack of explanation that bothered me. When I went to get my filling, nothing was offered to me, not even a topical, and they ended up removing an old metal filling from 20 years ago which did not feel great. When visits are so inconsistent, it makes it difficult for me to trust the business. I'm sure there was a reason, but again with the lack of communication, leaving me to wonder what their deal is. There are more instances, three of which included an unacceptably rude attitude that should never be used with people, much less patients. However, Yelp only allows so much room. These examples were the biggest reasons for me personally deciding to look elsewhere, you may have a different set of standards. They were very poor communicators and I need to know exactly what is going on and their reasoning to be comfortable seeing an office in any medical field. Some people prefer not to know and just get in and out. I think a majority of these practices are by direction of the corporation more so than this specific location. However, I'm more than a number, so I won't be returning.
