Cruise ships dock at Icy Stait Point and drop you right into an area to buy excursions and gifts. The museum is interesting with all of the antique canning equipment, but that leads you into more souveneir shops with a lot of overpriced items. The walk to Hoonah is pleasant and sometimes you may spot some wildlife. Once you get into town, there isn't much to do. read more

Cute little town of Hoonah at Icy Strait Point which is run completely by the native Tlingit people. Was one if our favorite stops on our cruise to Alaska, because it didn't have any of the typical souvenir stores that we saw at EVERY other stop. The tourist part of the town consists of a fish house, a small burger restaurant, a BBQ restaurant, a museum, a zip line, a small nature trail, a snack bar, a donut house, and about 10 small souvenir stores. The part of the town where the cruise ships dock is very "touristy" but you can also walk down the road into town where you will get a more authentic experience. We did a small whale cruise which we did see whales, porpoises and otters on but they were super far away and you really needed binoculars to see properly. We also did a bear tour where we took a small bus through town and into the forest to walk on a small path (about 1 mile) hoping to spot a bear. We didn't see any bears on our walk, but did see one in the road as we were driving up to the trail. Spectacular! read more

Icy Strait Point was one of the highlights on our cruise through Alaska. The town is a bit touristy (though it fortunately lacks many of the typical souvenir stores you find at every other stop), and the activities there are sensational. The town is run by the native Tlingit people. When you step off the dock, you can visit the information center and sign up for a variety of amazing outdoor activities (whale watching, Zip line, etc.) We saw whales right from the dock and went on a whale watching tour at Icy Strait Point which was excellent...saw many humpback and orca whales...just spectacular! The highlight for certain was the incredible Zip Line...it is the best we have ever encountered, anywhere, and I strongly recommend. It is billed as the longest in the world...and it does not disappoint. The views from the ride are incredible and the team setting you up are highly professional, safety conscious and friendly. The zip line is quite fast...so be prepared. You zip for over 5,000 feet. You board a bus at the base and then zip down, 6 people at a time. The whole excursion takes about 2 hours including the bus ride and wait time at the top. The ride down is exhilarating...and well worth the $150 per person. The minimum weight (which they take very seriously) is 90 lbs...and children can go (my 10 year old daughter went with me and LOVED it)...but they cannot weigh less than 90 lbs. Try to book an early run so that you can book another excursion -- Icy Strait Point is a beautiful place, but a very limited port of call. Enjoy the experience! read more

We stopped in Icy Strait Point on our cruise. The Cooking in Alaska's Wildest Kitchen "excursion" was described as an immersive cooking experience where we would get to see the daily catch filleted and get to learn the history of the tribe from a fisherwoman. Instead, we got a recipe for salmon dip and burgers from canned salmon "demonstrated" by a 19 year old from Florida who spent the majority of the "class" talking about his upbringing in Florida. I do not blame him in any way, but whoever is in charge of this tourist trap is doing the absolute least. We had a local kid as one of the assistants who we learned more from just chatting for 5 minutes after class. It was such a waste of time and money. Others in our group went to the tribal dance experience and the bear experience and left calling this place Scamsway. Hoonah itself is lovely (we had a delightful time at the brewery, and the walk there provided great views of the bay) but Icy Strait Point is clearly just there to take tourists' money. Don't waste your time and money on their experiences and walk into town or take yourself on a hike instead. read more

Our family decided this probably was the BEST port out of all of the Alaskan ports we visited. You get a taste of the Alaskan wilderness, but yet easy access through the forest (a very short hike/walk).. I wouldn't even call it a hike, more like a stroll. If you time it right, you can see humpback whales no more than 50 feet off shore. We flipped out when one appeared right near us as we walked along the shoreline. I highly recommend this port (per my 12 year old son). Bald eagles can been observed all over. We watched two fly over the Landing restaurant. read more

This port was nice as they only allow 1 ship at a time and less than 150 during the whole season. This stop is not one that many Alaska cruisers get to enjoy. Keep in mind that there is not much of anything else to do (that can't be done in two or so hours) aside from excursions. I went on the combo Whale and Bear Search tour. I choose this tour because of the reputation of Icy Point for being one of the top 4 whale/bear sighting areas in Alaska (though some would argue it is absolutely the best). The same exact tour is available WITH LUNCH for around $251 if you book directly with a local vendor but there was no availability for independent tours the day we were in port. So, unfortunately, due to late booking, I went via NCL Pearl's excursions and paid $289 (with no lunch included). I saw 3 whales (1 within 10 feet of the boat), otter, bald eagle & 5 bears. read more

I did it! I rode the zip line. It was a bucket list thing for me. I am terrified of heights but I was able to do this zip line. You will regret not doing it if you cruise to Icy Strait Point. The little city of Hoonah is so fun to walk around and get a real feel for life in Alaska. We loved our time here. read more

My husband and I had a fantastic time in Icy Strait! Our guide on the whale watching expedition grew up in the area and was very knowledgeable, as was our hilarious bus guide up to the (awesome!) zip rider. I appreciate that the tourism proceeds go straight into the pockets of the local tribe members in the form of annual dividends. One member in our group went on an excursion to find bears. They did not see bears and they felt it wasn't really designed to see bears. Others member of our group saw the tribal dance experience. They hated it and started calling icy straits "scam island," because none of it seemed real. I did the "cooking in Alaska's wildest kitchen experience." It was awful. It was advertised as a way of learning Alaskan culinary secrets from a chef, including watching a fish being filleted. That did not happen and the guide who showed us how to make very simple recipes for salmon dip and salmon burgers was absolutely not a chef. The "Chef" was a nineteen-year-old kid from Florida who was half polish and half Puerto Rican. The reason I know this is because all that was talked about during the experience was HIS life story. I did not learn much at all about Hoonah or Alaska in general, especially not food in Alaska. I learned more about Alaska form five minutes of speaking with another member of staff. The experience also promised talk about culture and history from a fisherwoman. That did not happen at all. They are really phoning it in at this cruise ship tourist trap of a destination. It's disappointing because they can do sooo much better! Even if it was the same thing, but with a kid who lived there his whole life who talked about himself the whole time, that would have been better. Four people from the tour group got up and left during the demonstration. That's how bad it was. I learned NOTHING. The best part of icy strait was walking along the coast and whale watching. Also got a beer at the brewery in hoonah. That was pleasant as well. Do better, Icy Straits! You can do SO much better. read more

This is billed as the world's longest zip line. It's a very fast and dramatic trip through the clouds, down a mountain for 5,330 ft. You board a bus at the base and then zip down, 6 people at a time. The whole excursion takes about 2 hours including the bus ride and wait time at the top. This is run by a local Tlingit group, who are, sorry to say, not the friendliest, but the trip down is exhilarating! The cost is about $150 per person. Check weight minimums if traveling with young children. Try to book an early run so that you can book another excursion -- Hoonah is a beautiful place, but a very limited port of call. read more

My family and I were in Hoonah last year and loved it. It was not your typical cruise ship stop. There was a small shop, a museum, and a couple of places to eat. Food was good, but the service was a bit slow. We went on a van tour of Hoonah with our tour guide Howard. Howard was friendly, informative, and fun. We had a great time! Visiting Hoonah was the highlight of our trip! We are now planning on moving to Alaska in 2016. Thank you Howard and the people of Hoonah! read more

I would like to commend the people that run the zip line! I recently traveled there on a cruise ship and I'm disabled in a wheelchair! I was skeptical That I'd be able to participate on this feature but we visited with Who we were told by others was the boss and he worked with his people to make it happen! The people that helped make it happen went over the top to accommodate me and to make it a good experience for me! They even thought about saving the front seat on the bus which many times throughout her cruise didn't happen at other outings we tried to do! My wife and I very much appreciated their efforts! Cruise stop they is just for tourists. There is a nice waterfront and forest walking trail which is beautiful. Jellyfish and purple starfish can been seen in the shallow waters. Shells and interesting rocks fill the beach. By the pier is a shopping plaza with souvenirs but also a selection of Made in Alaska crafts and products. Restrooms are clean. Not many food options, so we just went back to the ship for lunch. Free wifi outside of the only bar, so you can sit on the logs and benches and upload your photos while taking in the beautiful view of salmon jumping from the water while a couple of local cats and dogs stroll by. read more

We had a great bus driver on the way up and a heart pounding zip down. I think my start off scream may still echo the Hoonah mountains.

The day we came into port it was overcast and raining on and off so we did not walk into town. We had a zip line ticket for 1:45 so walked over to visitor center, right outside ship, to check in. The young girl who gave us our ticket was very helpful. The girls actually checking us in were not as helpful. Our bus driver was very nice and informative. He gave us a narrative of the area the entire bus ride, about 30 minutes. Once at the top, he dropped us off and had to walk down a steep windy hill to the zip line platform. Had about a 20-30 minute wait up top. Unfortunately, began to rain more so had to wait about 10 more minutes once in the seat. It was cloudy and raining going down...so not ideal. I felt like I wasn't going to stop at the end...comes in very fast. Unfortunately, do not feel it was worth $159. read more

There isn't much to do in this port besides excursions (most of which we've already done before this port), eat, shop in a couple stores, or take the shuttle/walk to the town of Hoonah. It's very much a tourist trap in Icy Strait Point and the town of Hoonah is very tiny, also with little to do/see. We went to Hoonah for a bit, then back to grab a drink before getting back on the ship. We chose the Duck Point Smokehouse (no page yet for reviews) since I'd seen pictures somewhere online of a good sangria there. The menu caught my eye on the way in and I ordered the halibut quesadilla (very sweet, so I was a big fan, my boyfriend not so much). I wanted the sangria, but the container was almost empty (and it looked pretty disgusting with a scoop in there for the soggy fruit and the bartender would use dirty hands to touch the scoop, then drop back in), so I got a different blue cocktail off the menu that was pretty gross and hard to force down. It is VERY pretty in this port, it just didn't impress us. read more

This was one of my favorite stops on the cruise. It is definitely a small port town but there is a lot to do. They have an incredible salmon river where the bears come to feed in July and August (we missed them as we were too early in the season and the Salmon were not running yet), whales everywhere (we even saw a pod from the dock and one came up right under the dock), and the zipline. I wished I had more time to attend additional tours. We chose to do the ATV and zipline tour. I saw more bald eagles and bald eagles nest than I could count. I would like to go back and spend a few days in the real town and whale watching. The town where the cruise drops you off is very touristy. My son (13), husband and I all loved the zipline. My only disappointment was it was over so quick. read more

We ported here on our cruise for a day. It was a beautiful sunny 80 degree day. Immediately when we disembarked we saw 4 whales in the inlet. They stayed in the area for around 30 minutes. We then walked to town which is about 1.5 miles away where there is nothing to see or do. If I had it to do over I would have not wasted my time with walking into town. There is a pretty cool fire pit right beside where the ship ports that we sat at for a couple of hours. Overall we could have skipped this port and not missed much. read more

I cannot recommend the ZipRider enough!!! It was the most fun I've had in a long time and made me feel like a kid flying through the air. The ride up the mountain was full of interesting facts about the wildlife and area. I have always been a little afraid of heights, but knew this would be an unforgettable (and safe) experience...and it was! Wonderful staff that were very professional and with a great sense of humor. Super friendly natives of the Tlingit tribe who are able to tell visitors so much about the area. Had a great time on the zip line and bear watch. Saw 4 bears, too many eagles to count, a Sitka deer, and a whale while we were here.
