    Sims Metal – Redwood City

    Sims Metal – Redwood City

My house had an old TV antenna. My dad climbed up and took it down for me, but then I didn't know…read morewhat to do with it. I Googled scrap metal recycling and came up with Sims. When I called them, the person that answered the phone simply said "Hello," so I was a little confused. After he confirmed that I had reached the right number, I asked him if they would take my old TV antenna. "Sure," he said amiably. "Just come by and drop it off." "Is there a fee?" I asked. "We only pay for bulk loads," he said. "I mean to drop it off." "Oh! No, just drop it off." You get there by exiting 101 at Woodside/Seaport and heading toward the bay on Seaport. Keep going past the Port of Redwood City until you see the Big Green Glass Office Park (I don't know its real name; everyone I know just calls it the Emerald City) - just before you read its entrace, you'll see a stop sign where you can turn off to the left. Turn left. Drive across the westbound lanes of Seaport and through the scrub and trees and hang another left on the road you'll find there; Sims will be visible on the right. Pull through the gate and onto the scale next to the small office building on the left. That's where the radiation detectors are. They won't take radioactive materials, so everybody has to go through the detectors. Then drive straight ahead and nice men in hardhats will help you unload your scrap metal. They took my old TV antenna, the metal pole it had been mounted on, and a random metal closet rod. One of the nice men in hardhats noticed an old broken halogen desk lamp rattling around in the back of my truck and asked if I wanted them to take it. "You'll take that?" I marveled. "Sure. Refrigerators, old microwaves, toaster ovens, old lamps. We take that stuff." "Yes! Please, please take that." If you get out of your vehicle you have to have a hardhat, which they'll give you. Really really nice guys, free recycling of scary scrap metal, appliances and electrical stuff that you don't want to put in the dump anyway - these guys are GREAT.

You should know that they no longer accept pick up trucks, you have to be driving a semi tractor…read moretrailer in order to recycle your metal here. They do have some blue donation bins near the entrance, they probably recycle whatever you put in there, hopefully.
