Use a flash. It's very dark!

I reserved the tickets as soon as I heard of the presale. We selected our time for 7pm. We checked in and went to the line to get in. Our line was shorter but there was a huge line next to us. I thought we reserved a time so they would be able to control traffic. This was not the case and it wasn't enjoyable because there were so many people. Some of the areas are very small and they had people going in all directions making it impassable. Hubby smacked his head pretty hard and my oldest daughter took a spill because walkways are poorly lit and slippery. For the price I thought it was ok.

They did a great job of creating snow since it's been a really warm winter. There was plenty to do at the Ice Castles for all ages. I suggest going at night because it's even more beautiful.

This review is for the 2020 Ice Castle at Geneva National Resort and Club. (The address on this page is for 2019's Ice Castle.) Being so close to one of the handful of ice castles in the States is pretty neat, so I never miss a chance to see them in person! It's a highlight of the winter season for me. This year, the Ice Castles moved from downtown Lake Geneva to the Geneva National Resort. This change allowed for a lot more space. The castle wasn't as tall as I expected, but with our weather, we're lucky to have what we got, which was still a pretty neat structure! There were slides, towers, wishing wells and a lot of nooks and crannies to explore. Some of the walkways were a bit narrow, but if you're careful and courteous of others, they're no problem. There are fire pits and a few snack stations with small food items to purchase. A few tips: The best time to visit the Ice Castle is at dusk so you can see the hidden LEDs work their magic. We had to leave before it got dark enough, but next year, for sure, I'll be waiting to see the LEDs light up these towers of ice. Also, be prepared for uneven ground. Tread carefully if you have mobility issues. Another tip is to buy your tickets when they open up the pre-sale, which happened around November of 2019 this past year. It makes it so much easier to get your desired ticket times. Overall, I would highly recommend the Ice Castles to people of all ages. They're totally worth it!

WAY overrated!! I was expecting to walk through castles, but honestly it was just ice walls with a couple of attractions like a slide, and a few mini tunnels. This seems like an activity that would be more enjoyable for kids. I was greatly underwhelmed. If I had driven from far away, and paid a lot for tickets I would be very disappointed. The entire attraction takes about 5 minutes to walk through, with many photo opportunities along the way. The slide was fun, and the walls were cool to look at, but after that and taking a couple pictures there was really nothing else to do. You're not missing out if you can't get tickets!

Lots of colors in the Castles.

This review is for Geneva National 2022. Beautiful scenery with Ice Castles, a couple ice slides, and tunnels. I thoroughly enjoyed this experience with my wife. Kids would have fun here too.

was fun but i expecting more but worth the $19 free parking social distance great for kids

It was pretty but very overrated. Maybe some of it had to do with the weather, since it was warmer than average there was a lot of slush and melting/regrew zing. We went in the evening so it was pretty crowded didn't have pre bought tickets and had to wait a ridiculously long time. Someone ended up giving us tickets so our entryway free. If we had to have paid it would have been disappointing.

They were beautiful. My kids loved them. However, the large slides had a 1 hour wait to go down. That was the only downside.

The Lights Fest Chicago is ironically located in Wisconsin, as you do need an open field to launch a bunch of lanterns safely; you can't just light em up in the city itself. But it's in Twin Lakes, which is only about an hour away. The place/venue may vary from year-to-year, so check http://www.thelightsfest.com for specifics. This review is specifically for the fest in 2018 at Twin Lakes. Parking starts at 3pm and closes around 6. When you arrive, staffers direct you on where to park in the grassy field. Poor grass, all trampled on. Once you are parked, please take note where you parked, as after the event, we've seen numerous people trying to set off their car alarms as a way of remembering where their car's at. Once parked, there's really only one direction to go. Go to one of the check-in booths and grab a lantern kit and marker. Check-in was easy-peasy. Then, find a spot and make yourself cozy. Definitely bring some foldable chairs, but if you forgot yours, the Lights Fest sells one of those inflatable couches, which aren't the most comfortable things, but is cozier than sitting on the grass. While waiting for sunset, to launch the lanterns, several bands take the stage playing some decent music. There's also several food trucks, including Mexican, bbq, pizza, and a dessert booth. After the bands play, they'll make an announcement that its about showtime. They do a demostration of how the lanterns work on stage. Even though on opposite ends of the stage there are projection screens, they did not display the demo on said screens. Instead, you can somewhat make out what they are saying and demonstrating. There are tiki torches lined up, I would estimate, every 30-feet or so. With this year's crowd, I would say there were plenty of torches for people. Maybe 3-4 people per torch, which isn't too bad. The thing is, lighting your lantern takes about 10-15seconds... not too long. But here's the thing; after an evening of waiting for this moment, 10-15seconds to light your lantern is a big deal. After an entire evening of the MC warning us to not light our lanterns yet, and that releasing the lanterns at the same time will be "worth the wait", it's pretty anti-climatic when the MC told us it was time to light the lanterns. And then in less than 20-seconds of announcing that, the MC says, "OK! Time to release your lantern in 5..4..3.." Umm, I still have 2 other people struggling/trying to light their lantern, in which lanterns are already releasing. Music is played in the background as the lanterns were released, which was pretty cool. Pro-tip: It's probably best to have someone hold the top of the lantern while you're trying to light the cardboard that is located at the bottom/base of it, as I tried to do it myself and I guess I didn't hold the lantern completely straight, and the flame burned a hole on the side of my lantern. Release... and plop. It floated less than 4 feet away from me. How sad. After that, a mad dash to the parking lot. With over 100 cars funneling through an exit that fits one car at a time, it took over 45-minutes for us to get out of the parking lot. Rows of cars lined-up and we just slowly killed the grassy field with our cars bellowing carbon monoxide. Left the event at 7:50PM, didn't get out of the parking lot until well past 8:30PM. Will I go again? Not sure. I think it would have been a lot more fun if you go with a large group of friends and know how the lanterns work. More than half the time I spent alone because either I was waiting for the bathroom or waiting 45-minutes on a slow moving food truck line. I just felt it was a lot of waiting, just for a 5-minute "climatic" event. It reminds me of puberty and high school XD I get waiting before is part of the fun, but waiting to get out of the parking lot was the killer of the event. Not sure really if there's much that can be done. I know this venue also hosts "Country Thunder" and other events... curious to know how they go. But that's not the scope of the review. BATHROOM REVIEW: Plenty of port-a-pottie are lined-up at the opposite end of the entrance/exit. There are several hand washing stations outside of the port-a-potties. Sit or squat? Dude, its a port-a-potty. Squat.

The admission isn't bad and I think the parking was free, so go to the official lots, and not one of the places selling space if at all possible. I generally like to eat at one of the church or other organization booths. This year I got potato pancakes and they were quite filling. I got a lemonade from a stand selling it fresh squeezed and it was also excellent. I sort of avoid many of the carnival type booths, because my experience at those has been mixed. They have very decent entertainment, but the big highlight for me the harness races, which is the only horse racing near me now. This is a two hour free event, although there is no gambling, and it very worth the price of admission to the fair if you enjoy horse racing. There was a good crowd this year. This event also has a 50/50 raffle with affordable tickets. It's usually on a Saturday. They have some decent shops too. There was a T-shirt place that had shirts for 20 dollars, which isn't a bad price for a fair. Also, they have a really interesting used book sale that I would definitely recommend checking out. The prices are good and the selection is interesting. Books can be heavy though, so you might want to save that until you can leave. The things I would skip are the sterling silver, which was 80 precent off, but who would buy a sterling and dyed agate ring for 275 dollars? Honestly, I thought was on the still on the expensive side. Also, I wish they would move the Walworth County souvenir shop out of the log cabin and into a booth. It is too dark in there and smells like a damp basement. It was hard to see what was for sale, so I didn't get anything. Overall, it's worth a trip from the north or northwest parts of Chicagoland. The people are very nice and it's a good time.

I've never in my life left a Wisco fest after 40 minutes and been actively pissed off, but congrats to you Chocolate Fest for coming in well below my low expectations. Have you been to State Fair? Imagine that, but with all the good parts left out. Basically, it's the super sketchy Midway area, with the kind of people who hang out there. You have to pay to get in which is a joke considering there is literally nothing to see or do whatsoever. Parking is in a muddy field and is $5. If you're smart (we weren't) you'll take one of the local businesses up on their $5 parking which includes 2 beers. Once inside, you'll enjoy exactly no local food providers except LD's BBQ which is the one and only redeeming thing here. Where are the brats? The roasted corn? The Chocolate tent was small and though there were some good samples, I felt we didn't a good bargain paying the extra money for the samples. The petting zoo was fun and there were plenty of other food options and things to see and do. I just wish the name was different so you wouldn't have a different Idea in your mind when coming. You imagine Chocolate fountains everywhere and booths creatively using chocolate for different dishes and products and it just falls flat in that regard. However, it was relatively cheap to get in, parking options are ample and many closer to the venue give you free drinks as incentive to park there. We actually found free street parking a block or two away so that was even better. All in all we had a good time and would definitely return next year!

Five stars solely for the food!…read more First off, it's called rib fest, so expect ribs. Second, ribs are known as BBQ food, so expect a lot of barbecue. There are a couple other options, such as corn dogs and corn on the cob; there are even one or two nachos options, kettle corn and a few dessert foods. But you come here for the barbecue! Beer, and hard cider are available for $6, while soda is $3 and water is $2. There are platters and meals. I would classify a platter as a true sampling of the place's BBQ. It usually consists of ribs, brisket, some pulled pork and chicken, and some sides (corn bread, beans, coleslaw, or potato salad). A meal would be akin to a sandwich or one meat dish with some sides. Some places offer additional BBQ foods like greens and chili. 12-13 vendors square off in the court of public opinion for the People's Choice award, and also in a judged competition for best ribs, brisket, etc. People's choice is about best overall. There are other vendors here, of the street fair type, sellings various goods such as yard art, games, toys, pet supplies, and foods such as fudge and Georgia peaches. There is a small area for the kids which includes rides and fair games, and also henna tattoos. Not far off, in a quieter area, are pony rides. There is a huge tent which, in addition to providing some much needed shade, offers live music and some seating for eating. In another area, there is seating with table umbrellas and another stage. IMHO, this is not a fest you're going to spend an entire day at. There isn't much to do unless you're into (predominantly) country music. You'll fill up on good food and need a rest before you try another vendor. We ate at two places and picked up a third meal to take home. We didn't spend more than 3-4 hours there. The best thing is that parking and admission is free, so you don't feel guilty about not staying. I can't say that this is a fest I would insist people go to, but it definitely is worth checking out, if for nothing else than to expand one's BBQ horizons! 28/2018

The event is limited to 12 vendors from around the country, 4 of them are local to the area.
