It's no easy task to find a hotel in Hamburg a week before departure, right in the middle of Christmas market season. Most good hotels with reasonable price are booked and only the ultra expensive ones or 6-bed dormitories left.
As it happens, this place has a room available for us. It was a twin room (with twin beds), but I took it anyway, thinking that I might request to have it changed to double later when we checked in.
With 65 euro per night for two people, I guess you pretty much get what you pay for, although if it was an off season, you could probably find a better deal elsewhere.
The location: It's right out Steinstrasse U-bahn station. Choose the Markthalle exit and you can see the building right in front of you. It's also within walking distance from Hamburg Hbf, but we got our day ticket and we were carrying backpack, so we took the U1 instead (only one station from Hbf, toward Nordstedt Mitte).
The room: Upon check in, I managed to get my twin room changed into double, so thumbs up for that. Since we arrived before 2pm and the hotel (as expected) was fully booked, we couldn't check in right away. We could store our luggage in locker room (You have to pay for deposit that you will get back when you retrieve your luggage) next to the receptionist.
Once we checked in, the room was very basic - as I said - you get what you pay for. It has lighting panel on top of the bed where you can adjust the lighting and the room has separated toilet and shower cabin, that is definitely handy. The challenge is that the shower cabin is so small that there's no clothing hook inside and if there was, you would get your clothing sprayed wet too, so no other way around but to strip outside the cabin before getting in to shower.
It's obviously fine for couples, but I think it might be awkward if you're staying here with your friends. Just sayin-
We opted out for the hotel breakfast (it's an extra 7.5 eur per person per day) for what I imagine would be a continental breakfast buffet, and chose to go out instead. After all, it's just a stone's throw to the mecca of food near the Hbf.
But if you need a clean basic room and don't mind the things I listed out above, then this place is ok. read more
