We came down from interstate and went out of our way to book a large table for 22 so we could…read morereconnect with family and friends from all over Melbourne -- and were absolutely shocked at how badly we were looked after. From start to finish, the experience was appalling. Staff were uninterested, unfriendly, and made no effort to accommodate such a large group other than setting a table and complaining loudly about being understaffed. The menu was a letdown straight away -- we went to order and were then told there was no roast of the day, no chicken nuggets for the kids -- and things only went downhill from there. The food was frankly terrible: undercooked chips, tiny steaks, watery sauces, gnocchi that tasted like it had been dumped in raw tomato paste. For the size of our group, not a single dish was decent. We felt completely dismissed and not cared for in the slightest, despite booking such a large table and bringing plenty of business in. Overall, this was one of the worst dining experiences we've had in Melbourne, and we will definitely never return.

Okay, I'm not sure why I do that, except that a friend of mine once agreed with me that sometimes it is really cool to go and visit a pub that you have never visited before - and then I discovered Yelp, which means I can record all of the places that I have visited (and share my thoughts on them). As for this pub, well, there really isn't anything special about it, other than being a pub that happens to have motel rooms. Now that I've been here I can set my sights for other places.

Needing a nice place to go big enough for our extended family to celebrate our daughter's fifth birthday, we decided on The Roxy. Booking at this place is serious business and you're required to pay a deposit of $15 per person which was a surprise to me, but I'm all for organisation so that was fair enough. I did get a bit frustrated though when I realised I'd missed a message from the booking coordinator, the week of my daughter's birthday to confirm if we were still going. I even had a timeline to get back to them, and frantically called them back a day after the deadline when I finally listened to the message. Considering I'd paid over $200 as a deposit, we were definitely going to be there! The staff are fantastic though and the place runs like clockwork. Pity my family and I don't. We were booked in for 7:00pm and bookings went for 1.5 hours so we had to vacate by 8:30. Unfortunately because there were so many of us and because we paid separately by the time we were seated it was closer to 7:30 so time was limited. The bistro offers a buffet style, International all you can eat feast. Being sceptical of large buffet's and how fresh the food is, I was truly impressed by the taste, variety, flavour and quality of the food. Not one of our 20 guests complained and we all went up at least three times. From pizza and pasta, Chinese, seafood, roasts, salads, Mediterranean dishes and then on to desserts, tea and coffee - The Roxy is the perfect place to please everybody's tastebuds! I was delighted to see how often the food was turned over and fresh food brought out; and each station was manned by it's own Chef and servers making the occasion even better. I must say we were all disappointed by the lack of time we had because the food was that darn good, we didn't want to stop! The only downside to the evening was when the Waitress brought out my daughters 'surprise' birthday cake right out in front of her before we were ready; which was a shame considering the same girl had done a terrific job hiding it all night. A magnificent place to eat, drink and enjoy the company of good friends and family. With a terrific indoor play area for kids and great promotions for special occasions such as Mothers Day and Christmas, The Roxy has become my local.

Okay, I could have just opened my review with that statement but if the guy who originally used that phrase in relation with this pub would probably sue me for plagirims. However, due to it's name, I simply couldn't resist the temptation to throw it into mine as well. Anyway, one time it was the first pub you would hit when driving into Melbourne from Sydney, and the last pub you would pass when you where leaving Melbourne (at least that is what they claimed). Anyway, this place surprised me a little bit namely because the pokies room have a wild west theme, so when I step in here the first time (and most likely the last) I looked into the pokies room and said 'wow, that's different'. Okay, it intrigued me, and I must admit that I thought it was pretty cool, but other than that this place was, well, pretty ordinary. Hey, they didn't even have a beer garden (and I like my beer gardens). Still, at least the wild west display was pretty cool.

We had organised late check in and they were pleasant and kind to deal with when I wS organising that over the phone. They also rang when we landed to check when we would be arriving. The place is so close to Melbourne which is a huge bonus for the price. There was a car park out the back so no street parking. The night manager was kind and helpful. When we got to our room we were impressed. The bathroom was large and lovely - free tea and coffee as usual, nice tv and comfy bed - what more can you ask for? The one complaint I can see people making but didn't bother us is the walls are quite thin so you can hear people around you. (At one point the bathroom coughed haha)

There are a few pubs scattered around the Preston area, and this one is by far my favourite. Being…read morea part of the ALH group means that there is always cheap beers available, and it is away from the main shopping area which means that it is also pretty quiet. Sure, they don't play all of the football games that I would like to watch, but then again there are other pubs I go to to watch the football. Being a suburban pub means that it is also going to have pokies, but that is not really a big deal for me (even though I really don't like poker machines - there are much more sophisticated ways of losing money than putting it into a machine with flashing lights and annoying sounds).

Preston Hotel is what you'd expect from a local "sports" bar. It has pokies, horse racing, weird…read moreATM machines ... and it is also soul - less. For a sports bar there was very little on TV but the races. We made the most of it but it's probably not worth visiting unless you're keen on gambling.
