I've noticed that in regional Victoria it is not uncommon to find a pub directly opposite the…read morerailway station. That is probably the best position for a pub because it means all of the workers will pop in here for a drink after a long train journey. When my parent's came over to Melbourne recently and stayed at my Uncle's place, it gave me a great excuse to come up here and have a drink. Mind you my auntie was quite surprised to find out that I knew that there was a pub opposite the railway station, but as my Dad mentioned, I happen to know where all of the pubs are. This was a pretty nice pub, and the cheerful welcome I received when I stepped in through the door goes to show, once again, that country pubs are quite different to their metropolitan counterparts (I never receive a hearty welcome when I walk into the Transit Bar). There is also a beer garden, but I would probably move away from 'beer garden' to describe it more like a backyard, something else that seems to be common with pubs out here.

With new owners and a few renovations, this is the best proper country pub in the area. A full bar…read morewith plenty of icy cold beer on tap will hit the spot nicely. Cameron and the team serve up the usual suspects you'd expect from good pub grub as well as seasonal additions and specials on the menu board. From the beef burger to the chicken parma or the amazing lamb shanks you're in for a treat. The atmosphere is great with 4 large screens around the walls so you won't miss any of the action from your favourite sports team. In winter grab a beer and warm up around the circular open fireplace, or head out to the beer garden. Weekly live music from some of the finest bands. Shannon Noll has even dropped in for the night! So drop in and say g'day to the manager Corey and you may even run into an AFL legend or two!

However, since at the time it was the only thing that seemed to be here (other than the railway station) I wasn't going to get off the train simply to visit this pub. However, when I had my hands on a car I made an effort to visit it, and it is certainly well worth the trip. Sure, Donnybrook is suddenly becoming a new housing estate, however this pub still seems to have a lot of old country charm. It has a lovely beer garden, as well as a really nice front bar. Mind you, the country atmosphere also tends to apply to the locals, so don't expect a trendy inner-city crowd.

Unfortunately they've failed to maintain the quality i saw when i first ate here. I ate here last night and my medium rare steak was as well done as it could have been. I sent it back as it was as tough as work boots too. When the replacement came out medium well, i just conceded to eating the chips and giving up. Their schnitzel is also a pre made freezer type situation, the kind of thing you'd expect from a dingy service station. Everything was dry and clearly not fresh. I hope ill be able to edit this in the future to say they've turned it around but right now i couldn't recommend the place to anyone. A real shame.

They appeared somewhat confused about whether they were in the right place or not. The server at the counter tried to help however there appeared to be confusion around whose name the booking was under. Anyway, eventually world order was restored and the party was pointed in the right direction. I stepped up to the counter and just as I asked for a table for three one of the elderly had returned to clarify some details. She didn't excuse herself or anything remotely courteous, she just began to talk over the top of me. The server then proceeded to answer the lady's questions about future functions, bookings and some basic pricing for a party. I found the whole thing quite annoying really. Especially when the server had already begun to engage with us. Perhaps it would have been much more appropriate to just direct us to our seats prior to accomodating the interrupter lady. It would have taken all of 10 seconds. We were eventually seated and given our menus. It was taken for granted that we knew the protocol, no explanation as to where to order, if there was table service, order drinks at the bar... nothing. A waitress came over after what I thought was an appropriate amount of time and asked if we were ready to place our food order. She was friendly however just left of centre in terms of enthusiasm but quite adept nonetheless. At least my question as to protocol was now answered. Our drinks arrived quite quickly and our meals soon after. We all ordered a chicken parma so unfortunately for the sake of this review I can only comment on one dish. The dish was nice, a decent sized parma with a generous topping of cheese and napoli sauce. The chicken was thick, I mean really thick as in a whole breast. I found it slightly unusual for a parma to be so thick however I must say it was cooked perfectly. It was cooked right through as chicken should be and it was moist. The accompanying chips were thick cut and quite tasty. The salad was actually quite a good salad with fresh ingredients and a nice dressing. In all, the meal as far as pub meals go was good. The place itself was ok, nothing stood out as being a feature however it was neat and clean. It is interesting to note the rather large car park was almost full. Upon arriving I thought we may struggle to get a seat however as it turns out about 95% of the visitors were in the pokey venue attached to the hotel. 'Conveniently' there were sliding doors directly from the restaurant into the gaming room. This was the first time I have visited this place and to be honest I don't know if I'll return. The food was ok, the service was ok and the facility was ok too however it just didn't press any buttons for me.

The restaurant opens for lunch and dinner daily, and a terrace cafe is available for more casual dining - the cafe also offers a daily breakfast for those early risers in the area. I've never eaten in the restaurant; however a catch up with friends over a coffee and a pastry is quite nice here. The Starlight room hosts all those dinner and show tribute nights - you know, where BABBA, or the legends of rock bust out the classics for a package price. It is also available for hire- I attended an engagement party, as well as a couple of 21st birthday parties here, and each time the room has been beautifully presented, and the service has been excellent. The finger food provided at all the parties has been delicious! So two thumbs up for consistency. Easy parking and a playground for kids makes the venue family friendly, and perfect for a nice evening out.
