A great climbing gym in the KC area! In my time in KC, I went here and another location in KC (that was closer to me) - and IBEX was the clear standout, well worth the longer distance IMO. The staff were very friendly and incredibly knowledgeable. There's also a cool climbing wall treadmill in the upstairs area that was a lot of fun. The bouldering area was also very well cushioned. I'm not the biggest fan of bouldering but I felt very safe bouldering here just because of how well maintained and cushioned the mats were. As a person visiting the area, I didn't have a regular climbing crew - I came solo and the autobelays were more than enough to satisfy my climbing need. The autobelays covered a solid range of levels and there were more than enough to cover my climbing needs. The other routes also looked interesting - and it's clear that the route setters have done a very good, thoughtful job in their setting. I'd highly recommend to anyone looking for a climb in the KC area! read more

I was denied access to the gym because I smelled like cannabis. I work in a commercial cannabis grow my clothes smell like cannabis all the time and it is perfectly legal for me to smell like that. I was told it was a safety risk, but I have signed a waiver and was only going to do the auto belay zones. I was going to purchase 10 day passes with gear and now I am boycotting your establishment and telling all my friends to stay away from your gym. Discrimination on smell of a legal product is unsatisfactory, anyone who has a daily relationship with cannabis knows their proper level and there isn't a safety risk associated with it. Good call guys I'll take my money elsewhere. read more

Best climbing gym in the KC area, by far. I was spoiled on this gym and didn't realize it, and now that I've moved I come back as often as I can because gyms in my new area can't compare. Staff are incredibly knowledgeable and helpful, always walking around and offering help if you need it. Great top rope routes, set with incredible care; not as many as at RoKC, but it's quality over quantity, and there are plenty of problems at all levels to keep you occupied until they reset the routes, as well as a good mix of slab and overhang. Love the bouldering area, the crash pads are cushier than most and make you feel more protected. Clean and cared for. Also not nearly as pricey as many other gyms I've been to. I grew up in the area and often try out different climbing gyms with my family while visiting. This is by far my favorite! I climb 2-3 times a week at my LA gym and found this gym to be a really great place to climb for me with experience and my 5 year old nieces. They staff explained the rules to the kids in a way that they could understand and didn't give more info then they needed... another local gym requires you to go on a 20 min 'tour' before you can climb... the kids got it here AND got to climbing quickly and safely! The staff also was able to belay test me quickly and safely- yay! They don't have as many auto belays as other gyms but the staff are VERY kind, the gym is good and the routes are great! Will definitely be back over thanksgiving! read more

IBEX has been acquired by new management. I can personally say the new management is responsive, cares about customer reviews, and will do anything within reason to earn customer loyalty and satisfaction. I have 9 young children in my immediate family. They have been to IBEX and really enjoyed the experience. I have been a ice, rock, and mountaineering climber since the mid-1990s. I have used this gym to touch up with climbing in the off season. I'd say it is the place to go in Kansas City. read more

Good, except the pulley that lowers you to the ground, because there is a loose part that doesn't completely secure you, when I let go, my body would jerk on the harness and the next day, my back has been sore. Y'all need to fix that. Sorry, but I have to give one star. read more

I've just gotten into rock-climbing recently, and I was so excited to find a place in KC that offers an great facility with ever-changing routes to climb and friendly, knowledgeable staff. If you've already climbed in the past, they're pretty cool about letting you test out of their official "belay safety class" (you know, as long as you sign your life away on the waiver!) The prices seem pretty fair--especially for girls--Thursday nights are ladies night, and you can climb as much as you want for $10 and that even includes renting shoes and harness. Pretty sweet. This is a great place to bring friends and family, someone on a date to get their adventurous side out, or to meet some really cool people that love climbing! I would definitely recommend checking it out--it's fun for all levels and all ages! read more

I started rock climbing here thanks to a great Group on offer. I love the routes and the layout of the place. I went last Sunday 9/2 and greatly regretted it. They had a class that easily had 20 or more people in it. When the class let out and people were being checked off by the instructors, the instructors told the class to tie in to a route and wait for them to come check them off. Do the math, 10 couples tied in to routes but not climbing.....we went and complained to the young lady working the front desk and all she said was they will get them checked off as soon as possible. I understand everyone has to be checked off before climbing! It's always best to put safety first. I wouldn't want it any other way. But to have 10 routes taken by people that are just standing there is not ok. Take one or two routes and check people off. Also the instructors need to be sure to inform new climbers that they have to watch out for people coming off the wall. I was coming off the wall and my belayer told a lady from the class that I was coming down and she refused to move. She said she was trying to tie in and when she was done she would move. Again, safety first. I'm hanging off the wall and you are worried about tying in? The instructor should have corrected the lady right then and told her she needs to move but he just stood there. What can I say, when you have young people that are easily intimidated, they aren't going to correct those Type A personalities. While talking to one of the ladies that sets routes during a quick break, she told us that they booked so many people in the class that day that they had to call in additional help. So, needless to say, we won't ever go back on a Sunday. I didn't mind driving from Shawnee to Blue Springs because we love the routes and the environment but if you can't climb, it just isn't worth it. read more

My Husband and I took the intro belay class yesterday. It was really fun and we enjoyed learning to climb. The gym is a really great size (especially in comparison to others in the area) and the price for our class was pretty reasonable. All that being said, we wouldn't go back. The class was taught by two kids. The female instructor was lovely and very helpful. Unfortunately, the young Asian guy was a total jerk (edited my choice word for this review). I don't know what his problem was but he was rude from the moment we got there and bordered on insulting through the class. Also problematic, there were little ones everywhere. I think perhaps their parents were climbing, but no one was watching them while they madly ran around the mats. read more

Ibex is a great gym! I've been climbing at Ibex on and off for about 10 years - For the past 5 years I've been climbing there 2-3 a week when I'm not traveling. - Staff is awesome. High focus on safe climbing, as it should be. - Routes are refreshed fairly often, which is important if you are coming into the gym a couple of times a week. - Bouldering setting has improved greatly. Worth a trip upstairs to check out the bouldering too. - Great top rope and lead routes. This is the best place to climb in KC and caters well to new climbers in addition to more experienced climbers. read more

I purchased a gift card for my grandchildren and specifically said that I wanted to pay for all gear. When I called the facility to schedule a visit, I was told that I needed to pay a small additional expense, $4 or so, because of local tax changes. Upon arrival, we were told that we needed to pay an additional $20 to cover shoes which I was initially told were covered by the gift card. Another issue is that another child joined our group. Therefore, each grandchild had less time to actually climb. When I spoke to a manager about the issues above, I was told that my grandkids climbed for a couple hours after their session. This is absolutely untrue. When they were told their session was over, they immediately took off their gear. BEWARE-If you get a gift card, get details in writing regarding what's covered. Management response was untrue and offensive. read more

Ever had one of those nightmares where you walk into an operating room and they hand you a scalpel and everyone is looking at you to save someones life, or some such equally impossible task. That was kind of the feeling I had as I walked in to Ibex and looked up at the four story wall curving around above my me. Did not see anyway that was going to happen. However, as it turns out the staff is extremely patient at explaining and showing you how to setup the rigging, knots, etc. And sure enough an hour later I was climbing to the top of the wall.... granted it was the easy one, but still it was more than I saw myself doing. And for just $25 it is a pretty cheap way to have a good time and try something new. read more

Love Ibex! The staff is nice and makes sure everyone is being safe. The setting is really great, and there are new routes often enough to keep it interesting. The leading is great, with lots of variety, overhanging routes and vertical routes to work many different techniques. The lead cave is the best feature they have, and the routes on it are always varied enough to have super hard routes and easier (5.9-5.10) routes on the roof as well. The atmosphere is always fun and friendly and positive, and I love going there! read more

Ibex is a beautiful gym. It's clean and a good location. As a owner of my own small business I appreciate and see what most won't. With that being said though customer service is a must. It doesn't matter how much you spend on equipment and the extra hours you put in to have your facility top notch from the front door being clean to technical skills on the routes. Customer service will scare away any customer. I am sure many dollars have been spent to get new members into your gym and now the customer service has to keep them coming back. I realize there are regulations and I am sure since there are many risks with a gym such as yours it is so important to make sure every climber is following those rules for their own safety. I have given Ibex 4 different attempts to help me feel at home with their customer service. I realize I will be watched, as I am not part of the "climbing regulars", to which I respect. Not only do I feel as if I am being watched and clearly being spoken about but then when I am approached about a technique change it has been done in such a rude, higher power manner. I keep trying to come back in hopes that it was someone just having a bad day but it keeps reacquiring and the friends I bring in to enjoy the climb as well notice it too. Not everyone attending the gym will be climbing professionals. Some such as myself just enjoy doing a new workout and learning a new sport. I would love to come back and just see employees obviously watching for our own good but when approaching doing it in a sincere humbling friendly way. Even approaching a customer with a smile makes a big difference. I am taking time out of my busy day today to make this review to truly show an improvement that I believe will really help business. I have received the opinion of the guests I bring into Ibex as well as the other day a gentleman at QT noticed my Ibex key ring and asked what I thought and after hearing my review he agreed he had the same experience. I believe you guys have worked so hard in all the other departments to better yourself for your community and customers its just this little area that leaves your customers leaving the business with a sour taste. read more

Absolutely best date idea! I found this gym on Groupon and was interested. I bought it and surprised my boyfriend with a "date". Keep in mind, neither one of us have rock climbed. We got there and the place was pretty big. The staff were so friendly and helpful! We took a class with Jake and he was phenomenal. He really made our experience fun! I walked into Ibex yesterday, nervous and terrified of heights. Today, I walked back in, eager to get back on the wall and try a harder route. What changed? A thorough review of safety in the Ropes and What-Knots course, and interactions with a fantastic staff. While it was clear the trainers have done this hundreds of times before, they still took the time necessary to get everyone on the wall. Sure, that meant we had to wait around some while others had their turn, but it also meant we had the instructor's full attention when it was ours. I made it up the wall, had my trust fall, and was immediately hooked. Your first two weeks are included the class price, so I walked back in today to get in some more time. While we were there, we got to watch the experienced climbers pull off moves I didn't know were possible, and inspiration to keep trying. Can't wait to go back! read more

Ibex is a solid place to climb. It's the only dedicated climbing gym in Kansas city, and I appreciate the spirit of the staff. It's small by gym standards, and the staff are sometimes a little grumpy, but I'm always happy when I leave, so it's all good. The route setters are great, and have imagination. my only complaint is that they don't use the v-scale for bouldering. All in all, quality in kansas city! read more
