THE lounge in the Madrid airport. Lovely decor, well staffed. Efficient process expedited us through the lines for check in and picking up food and drinks. The coffee is outstanding, the juices good. Small bottles of beer and wine for the taking. The food line had almonds, chips and small bowls of olives, feta salad. The hot line had basmati rice with curried lentils, meatballs marinara with mashed potatoes and a pasta with artichokes.

This was a major disappointment. There's nothing like a nice lounge to refresh one's spirits when coming off an overseas flight, dog-tired from lack of sleep, and early, early, so early in the morning. But not this time, alas. This Madrid Aeroporte's Terminal 4 (not 4S - which has a terrific lounge!) Iberia club was closed for renovations apparently and as an alternative, I was given a limp piece of paper that allowed me into a cafe next door. This in turn, allowed me to have a complimentary glass of orange juice and coffee, and a piece of pastry. That's about it. Went back to the gate and had a better experience there by far.

For being a very sub-par member of OneWorld, Iberia sure invested a lot of time and attention to crafting a beautiful, comfortable, and worthwhile lounge for its users at MAD. It's the best you'll find in Spain, but compared to other lounges, it doesn't necessarily shine above the competition. After flying from ORD-YYZ-LHR-MAD, I was ready to take a break and relax before the last leg of my flight to Mallorca. Sala VIP Iberia Dali is the only major lounge for Iberia and its partners, but certainly provides a quiet space to getaway from the intricacies of this Spanish airport. The lounge is laid out in two separate sections- one that lacks an easily accessible open bar. I am sure you know which one to head towards then. Once you find a comfortable seat, you can easily people watch and admire the airport's architecture. There is a dedicated computer space near the entrance, showers, and public restrooms. For food, they had a decent liquor selection, and some fine wines to sip on before your flight (which will literally give you nothing if you are flying Iberia- sans business class). Their snacks of crisps and olives were nice, and I enjoyed the packaged pastas, rice salads, etc. I ended up taking some bites with me on the flight so that I wouldn't go hungry or thirsty. Unfortunately, the Wi-Fi here is lacking. I ended up using my roaming data plan instead as I was actually able to connect to it than the Wi-Fi. I appreciate the lounge for providing solace after a long journey across the Atlantic (and then some), and know I'll have somewhere to turn to if I wind up back in Madrid again someday.

While other lounges update in an attempt to reach mediocrity, this lounge has long been above average with a nice selection of Spanish wines, small salads and sandwiches and if you desire a libation, there is an abbreviated bar. While the furniture is getting a little tired, it is still OK for its purpose. Showers and plenty to read make a longer stay comfortable. Well done!

This is what a world class lounge should look like.

Nice lounge in Madrid, has a decent selection of food and drink and a fair amount of seating with power outlets.

They have a nice buffet with quite a lot of hot and cold food options. There is also a snack area with popcorn, chips and other nibbles. They have a large bar area with self service wine or a bartender to help with a more complicated drink. There is a water filtration system if you would like to refill your water bottle before boarding the plane. The staff has always been so helpful and accommodating, and available to answer questions. The lounge setup is actually done very well with sections decidated for a specific area from a play area for children, to some clear quiet areas for work and everywhere in between. Even the buffet is setup well where it can be accessed from both sides to reduce congestion. As for the food, I was generally disappointed as the hot foods looked unappetizing and the cold foods consisted mainly of salads, notably missing a large selection of cheeses and the famed Iberian ham. That said, the candy bar with popcorn, chips, and candy makes up for the sweet tooth component. The drinks on the other hand is well stcoked from a large variety of non-alcoholic fizzy drinks for all childrens desires to a generous selection of wines and beers for adults. The lounge also has separate areas for showering and resting, which are incredibly useful for those with tiresome connections or are otherwise just tired. Accessible by flying One World Business or with OW Sapphire, this lounge offers a lot of greatness outside the food department. I was happy to see, given airport rules and the fact we were about to board a super long direct flight back to LAX, that despite it being mid-morning, all the drinks were out, by which I mean a decent number of pretty good looking Spanish wines, a decent handful of relatively mid-tier spirits, two amari, vermouth, cans of beer, as well as espresso from an auto-espresso-machine, and several juices. Everything you need to make a whole bunch of cocktails if you're that sort of nerd. (For good and bad, everything's pour-yourself. The upsides are obvious - the main downside was that they didn't have anything for measuring, you just had to pour by eye. That's fine though, I was just making them for myself :D.) Obviously being still mid-morning, I didn't have a chance to try *all* the wines (though one other benefit of being pour-yourself is that made it easy to pour a *small* amount of wine, if you did want to try a couple, which I did (pretty decent.) I was amused to note that the two amari and the vermouth were all classic Italian brands rather than Spanish, though. Also had a solid brandy Negroni and a great Giribaldi (orange juice and amaro :)). And an espresso by itself, which was just decent (decent enough for free, that's for sure.) There wasn't any line for it when we were there (again, mid-morning), either. Food-wise, at the time, there were a handful of different sandwiches, which were all fairly mediocre by themselves. They also had a diy selection of salami and cheese, with olive oil and vinegar. Put those together and you have much better sandwiches! There was plenty of space when we got there - and it was nice that it had a solid 2nd-floor view to outside that got plenty of natural light... even if it was a view of a parking lot, not the runway. If I were paying to get in, though, I dunno. Might still be worth it if we wanted to do a wine tasting while we were there... wine at an airport outside a lounge would be like 15+ bucks a glass. Maybe not mid-morning though. I already miss having a card that let me and my wife into places like that for free, and I haven't flown anywhere else yet since, lol.

We had a 6am flight out of Madrid to our connecting flight to Frankfurt prior to getting back to the States. It wasn't the easiest to find at the airport, we had to ask for help. Pros: fairly large with plenty of seating, great drinks selection, clean Semi-con: no hot food options for breakfast - only cold cuts, bread, pastries, fruit, yogurt, packaged cold sandwiches. This is typical Spain breakfast food so it is normal but I'm always sad when there isn't any hot foods available.

Cons: We came in around 11am-ish and they had pastries out and cold cuts so they were still in breakfast. I was expecting to see eggs or something but they had no hot food options. I asked one of the staff when they would have hot food and she gave me the most stank look!! and grunted at me, HUHH?? w/the facial expression to match. She was so rude. I asked the question again in Spanish this time, and she rudely snapped at me and said (in Spanish) no hot food until 2PM! and stormed off. I later realized that I misunderstood her or maybe she didn't even know. But anyways, as I was serving myself the cold cuts, I accidentally put the tongs back in the wrong spot. This same rude grunty woman came up next to me, grabbed the tongs and literally SLAMMED them hard onto the tray and walked away. it made such a loud awful sound! As she walked away, I did not hold back and I yelled at her in Spanish, "WOW WHAT A RUDE WOMAN!!!" and other people looked up. She just kept walking. I had another opportunity to tell her again and yeah I did tell her. Not that I was looking for her, but she just happened to be in my path. They didn't do a good job of taking away dirty dishes from the seating areas. There were stacks of cups and plates and bowls, trash, and empty beer and water bottles everywhere. It looked really sloppy like the morning after a party. At about noon, they brought out some hot food items, and more dishes to stack. Dessert items were meh but there was only 2 options, a strawberry cheesecake and another, I can't remember. it wasn't memorable I guess. Wish there'd been more dessert options and hot food options for breakfast.
