Fancy little place to stop and have a look at what you're missing if you come by during normal business hours, and for a change I'm off by about half the day. Nice brightly lit rest area for your peace of mind with ample parking no matter what you drive. Plenty of luncheon tables across the grouds, some covered most not and a couple places to sit inside by vending. Big honking bronze inlay on the floor and relevant artwork and displays welcome you to the Commonwealth, the "Miles to..." post in the middle of the lobby adds just a touch of whimsy. Monolithic slab out front to recognize coal miners everywhere but especially those who lost their lives in a 1962 tragedy beneath this site.

    vitamin d and picnics please!

Not all rest stops are created equal. And this one sets the bar high! The picnic areas were actually nice. They have a lot of grass and a forest next to the picnic tables so it doesn't feel like eating in a concrete jungle. Some of the tables have a pavilion (one table per pavilion) so it felt like a nice picnic date. The interior was great as well. Clean bathrooms (a roadside treasure), a museum area to read history while stretching your legs, and an actually good selection of travel brochures. And by good I mean great. In fact, they have hundreds. You go to what you want (excursion, activity, hotel, hikes, restaurant, etc) and there's a plethora of decisions. Then, there's a big beautiful welcome with even more divided by region of PA. There were also two people on staff that were knowledgeable of the areas and had a gift of hospitality. Overall a great stop!

It also has an Apple Green desk, and its sign said that customers could "order ahead, pick up and go." Other amenities are an ATM, restrooms, lots of tables and chairs, information for tourists, etcetera. During my visit on a Sunday morning, I thought that the building and grounds looked to be in good condition. My husband purchased gasoline at the Sunoco. We browsed the products in the 7-Eleven but did not like their snacks and beverages. The Auntie Anne's did not appear to be open, but the Burger King and Starbucks were. I used the women's restroom, and it had lots of available stalls that were fairly clean.

I made my way there and then decided to make my way inside. What I can say about this area is that even though this service plaza is newer, it was poorly designed and poorly enforced on where vehicles can park. Inside, it almost looks deserted given the time you stop here. It looks underutilized and almost gives off a dead mall vibe when you walk in. Like every possible business was like, "Nah, I'm out." It also gives off a bit of a dirty feel to it as well. Like it wasn't properly cleaned in a while. The bathrooms have a smell to them. The dining area looks as if there is a film on tables, and it is so dim inside.
