We were very satisfied with just about every aspect of our recent stay at Hôtel Napoléon in Menton…read more Due to flight delays we arrived at midnight instead of mid afternoon as we planned. We alerted the hotel that we were delayed and they assured us that it would not be a problem. When we walked in at 23:49 we were promptly greeted and checked in. Not long after that we were sleeping off our jet lag. Our room, decorated with funky, brightly colored post-modern Euro-style furniture was compact, clean and comfortable. No complaints about the accommodations. The breakfast service was quite good. Unlike what we get at hotels in the USA, the bakery, the cheese, the charcuterie and even the coffee were excellent. And nothing beats pain au chocolat with your second espresso of the morning. On our final evening in Menton, after a stroll through the city we returned to the hotel and ordered some drinks from the bar (open 24 hours). The lack of bar tending skills by the employee on duty was the only blemish we experienced--but a minor one. He didn't exactly understand what I wanted and even after explaining, it still wasn't quite right. But, all I really wanted was some alcohol, and I got all the booze I needed at a fair price, even if the proportions of the drink were off. I'm not sure that I'll ever be back to Menton, but if I am, I'll book my room at the Hôtel Napoléon again.

Situated in the South of France on the Italian border, Menton is surrounded by gorgeous mountains and the bright blue Sea. Hotel Napoleon is a 4 star establishment with a laid-back feel. All rooms have a balcony with either garden, mountain or sea views. It is extremely clean with a nice shower, comfortable bed, mini-bar, and a bistro table on the balcony to enjoy your view. There is a nice pool with chairs and beach towels, a fitness room, bar and cafe. The best part is the location. You can walk anywhere in Menton to shop and eat. It is also less than a mile to walk to Italy and about 6 miles to Monaco. The staff was very helpful and friendly.Check in and check out was a breeze.

Helpful staff, good location, clean rooms…read more This is a clean and convenient budget hotel. The staff is great; they are flexible, helpful, and engaging. We had a reservation for three people for three days, then two people for three more days. Toward the end of it, we realized that we'd need to make another reservation for two on a weekend; they set things up with very little notice. It's a good location: the hotel is a short walk from the beach. The hotel is a few minutes west of the city center and the tourist shops and restaurants--it's a quick walk, but you are away from all the people. Within a couple of blocks you can also find cafes, restaurants, bars, and groceries. There is a farmers market, too, and the train station is directly across the street: from there, you can jump on a train to Italy, Nice, Monaco, etc. The cons: if you are on the Rue Albert 1er side, it's loud. We were on the third floor, and I'm glad we weren't lower. You can hear everything: televisions in the apartments across the street, cars and scooters driving by (especially at 3 a.m.), the insane seabirds that like waking up at 4:00 a..m. and making as much noise as possible. You are also across the street from the train station, so you hear the trains.

Of all the places we stayed, Villa Amiel in Sospel stands head and shoulders above the rest in terms of size and quality of the rooms, breakfast, setting, but more because of the super welcome we got from the proprietors Patrick and Mark. When we arrived we got offered a welcoming drink and they also took the time to chat with us - telling us about the places to visit in and around the village such as the old Maginot line forts and the old chapels in the village. Mark has a wealth of information about great walks in the valley and beyond and his descriptions are spot on too. Come the evening when we wanted to know where to eat they also gave us absolutely honest recommendation for the restaurants (which they booked for us too) Needless to say the food was excellent! (la Mordagne and Relais du Sel) In fact we were so taken by the way we were treated, we stayed another night and frankly we would have stayed longer but they were fully booked after that. But the courtesy and service did not end there. We were going on towards Menton via Castilar but Mark suggested we went by St Agnes and stayed there overnight instead. Again they recommended we stayed and ate at the hotel St Yves (Good food, reasonable accommodation) and then took a route down to Menton that passed by the old town of Roquebrune and even told of a a great place to stay in Menton as well. All in all, our whole holiday was greatly enriched by our stay in Sospel and at Villa Amiel in particular. There is so much we would have missed if we had not met Patrick and Mark. Oh, and one last thing. When we can to pay our bill, the welcome drinks we got on arrival we not included - they were free - which was really quite a nice touch.
