The woman that runs the front of the store gives you the eye and quietly sizes you up. It takes her a minute to warm up to you. You'll have a better experience if you speak Tagalog (National language of the Philippines). Hot foods aren't ready until 11 or 12 noon but there's popular Filipino snacks (Chippy, V Cut, Clover), pop, C2 green tea, and bakery items to snack on while you wait. There's 4 stools at the bar table for dine in and a TV set to CP 24 (no, not a Filipino station) I noticed a lot of people ordering bags of Chicharron (Fried pork skin). I figured I should try some since they were so popular. Holy cow! They were soooo good: Crispy, crunchy with a little salt and tiny savory bits of meat. A fatty indulgence that I thoroughly enjoyed dipping in spicy vinegar. While I was waiting for the hot food to come out I met the hubby who cooks. He's not Filipino, WHAT?! No wonder the TV was set to a Canadian station. He was very friendly and told me their story. They have been in business for 10 years and they've built up their business strictly through word of mouth. They want to stay a small business because they don't want to change the vibe of the place nor sacrifice quality. When the food was finally ready I ordered a Caldereta combo with rice and two empenadas to go. Tried the empenadas first. They were cold, the pastry was flaky and the filling meager. Heating it up in the microwave didn't help, it just tasted bland. The Caldereta however was delicious. The meat was tender, the veggies were not overcooked, and the bell peppers still had a little bit of a crunch to them. The Caldereta was on top of the rice, so the rice was covered in the savory sauce. A comforting and filling dish indeed. Glad to know there's a Filipino grocery close by where I can also get my chicharron and Filipino food fix. I will be back when the craving hits.
