I have absolutely no issues with Dr. Mayer, who is a terrific surgeon. He explained the entire process and was proactive after each surgery. He went above and beyond to make sure my recovery was comfortable and progressing hours after the procedures. Each eye was 20/20 after separate cataract surgeries, so I consider that a total success.
But beware of the total charge. If you think you're paying the price Washington Eye Center claims, you are kidding yourself. I was quoted an out-of-pocket price of $1,900 per eye, not including the pre and post visits to the eye center. The total cost wound up being about $5,600 instead of $3,800, and it's not like I have a rinky-dink insurer (UHC) for coverage. The add-ons were enormous, and no one at WEC, Palisades Eye Center or others involved in the procedures were interested in providing me with an itemized bill explaining each charge.
Now we get to Hylton's staff. The techs performing the preliminary and post exams before my Hylton consult are terrific, and the front desk personnel are personable and quite helpful. But there are so many times when the rest of the staff shows little disregard for your questions once the surgery is completed. I had trouble getting calls returned. My requests for itemized bills went unheeded. They also double-booked me for my second surgery, and I have yet to learn if I had to pay extra for their mistake.
Bottom line? Hylton is fantastic, but read the fine print in your contract and realize that no one gets out of there paying just $3,800 for cataract surgery on both eyes. read more
