It's really great to see places like this still flourishing in a town where there's a local…read moreSainsbury's, Tesco AND Co-Operative, all within 100 metres. I always prefer to go to a good greengrocers. You know that the products are going to be local and in season. They usually have a better selection of products than little supermarkets, and they don't generally sell out before the end of the day. (Oh, Tesco, why can't you ever order enough apples and carrots?) The staff here are lovely and, quite importantly, have lovely Welsh accents. This is a great place to come to feel a little more inspired about your five a day. Be warned though, they don't accept cards, but there's a cash machine just outside the arcade.

Like a good child of the late 80's early 90's, well conditionned by society to rely for my weekly supply only on mother supermaket, I used to buy my standard sized fruit&veg from loyalty checking megahouse, believing of course that this was the best thing for me. Sadly in the area where I used to live, small shop keeper where a thing of the past. In our village we had 2 small supermarkets and just the 1 butcher. Although my parents used to have fresh veg boxes delivered regularly, this was quite an expensive choice for them. When moving to Penarth a year ago, I discovered lodged under the Arcade this small but magnificient grocerer gorged with luscious all shapes and sizes colourful amazing, fragant and CHEAP fresh, unpacked, unprocessed fruits and vegetables. Amazingly too, since they are sourced locally they are fresher thus keep longer (well that the theory since we eat them quicker as they are nicer). So anyone reading this: go there and try them. The staff is friendly, the products are great. They also have some old stuff such as liquorice sticks and some very old fashion sweets.

Located on Cowbridge Road East it's a great pit-stop for Canton residents who are looking for fresh produce. Items are displayed in crates either around the shop itself or out on the pavement on tables, and everything is loose so you can hand-pick exactly the pieces you want. Prices aren't bad either, and service is fine so if it's not busy you can be in and out in a few short minutes. The last time I was there I dropped in on my way past to grab an apple and only 30 seconds and 10p later I was on my way.

It's also ruddy cheap and jam packed with plenty of items to set you on your way to five a day. No pre-wrapped nonsense here, everything is open for a good old fashioned fondling. I have a confession to make. I have no idea what I'm looking for when I pick things up in a greengrocer, I just feel I have to pick up and put down at least three items before popping something in my basket. It's like a ritualistic dance of fruity consumption. Closer to Christmas they start to stock nuts and sugary things and I think they do Christmas trees too, but I can't really remember as we always use a plastic one. Canton Fruit Market is cheap, friendly and convenient.
