So the whole fried catfish is swai. Which technically is a catfish, just not what people expect from usda farm raised. The oil on the fried foods tastes a bit old and burnt. The fried mushrooms are good, but no saltiness to the seasoning. The part that really put me off today on my meal was INSTANT mashed potatoes. Really? Youre gonna say youre a restaurant and serve fast food crap mashed potatoes??? Even if the previous owners served swai, the mashed potatoes were still homemade, not pasty dry lumps of potato flakes. Best gumbo with sausage chicken shrimp and oysters!! The boudain balls are homemade and the best I've ever had! The dipping sauce that comes with it has just the right spice. We were there over an hour. My order was wrong but when I finally got my food an hour after we got there it was not good. Hush Puppies used to one of my favorite places for gumbo. This was nothing even close to what they use to serve. My husband got a baked potato with nothing, not even a pat of butter and although requested nothing was brought. I don't blame the server that was trying to wait tables, answer calls and be the host, I blame the owner that was walking around laughing and visiting and not helping his people when it was apparent the place was understaffed. We won't be back, it used to worth the drive but unfortunately that is no longer the case. read more

Twice we drove up to eat and they closed early vs the time on their website. They were sitting outside and said we got slow so we just shutdown. The food was delicious, and the prices were reasonable. My son got the crawfish, and even though it was towards the end of crawfish season, they still tasted great. I ordered the stuffed crab, and it was amazing as well. We were just in town for the weekend, but I will definitely come here again if we're ever back in town. read more

I definitely have to make it a point to stop by Hush Puppies again. I am from South Florida but will definitely make an attempt to drive through in order to have another great meal at this little diamond restaurant in East Texas. Before I even get to the delicious food, I need to address the country-like atmosphere. Everyone from the local patrons and the staff at Hush Puppies we're wonderful. Very, very friendly and always with a smile. Everyone in the restaurant, including the customers, treated us like as if we were long time friends. What a warm feeling one feels when entering this fine establishment. Then comes the food... all cooked to order and somehow served quickly, even though it was super busy when we went in. I only took a couple of pictures but everything that we had was delicious and had that home-cooked appeal. Thank you to all the wonderful hostesses, servers, cashiers, cooks, bus crew, management and all the wonderful employees at Hush Puppies for providing us (party of 4+a service dog) a wonderful meal and a great experience as we passed on through the great state of Texas. read more

Nice family owned place to eat. Good cajun style fish and seafood and I highly recommend the Monterrey Grilled Chicken with Shrimp.

We have enjoyed eating here for about a year. Very good seafood, good service, great selection of sides. However we were not very happy about our visit today. My husband called to see if they still had inside dining and any restrictions. They said they were seating at 50% capacity. So we drove the 30 minutes from Tyler to go eat there. When we got there, none of the tables were marked for keeping empty. We were seated in the back section at a table, and there were about 4 other tables seated. But by the time we were nearly done with our meal 100% OF THE TABLES WERE FULL! We were lied to, and they put our health at risk. This made my husband very uncomfortable and did not enjoy his meal. We used to love this place and would drive over 50 miles one way to come eat. Lart few times have been horrible. Fish and shrimp are too greasy to eat. Kind of like they don't drain them when they come out of the fryer just dump it on the plate. We couldn't eat the squash because when you cut into it, nothing but grease. Fried crawfish tails tasted old. We decided to get dessert; figured can't mess that up.. wrong. Buttermilk pie was ice cold right out of the refrigerator and blackberry cobbler with ice cream was old and freezer burnt. We normally give a place a little slack just in case they have a new cook or something that would cause less than average food. This was our third time to get a plate full of grease. We are done with Hush puppies! We will find a new place that understands the importance of draining fried foods and having fresh foods. read more

Very nice little restaurant- much bigger inside than it looks. Cute rustic atmosphere. Sweet waitstaff. We had the catfish fillets- crispy cornmeal breading. Not greasy at all. Perfect portions for us. Be sure and save room for dessert! The chocolate pie was divine! read more

We started with Gator Bites, for our entrees we had catfish with okra & cheese grits and frog legs with mashed potatoes and pinto beans. A new find for us but one where we will definitely stop again!! Discovered dessert on the way out but no room left. Stoped about 11:45 and our downtime was only 45 minutes! Restrooms were very clean. So this was the first time I went out ans actually sat down at a restaurant since March. Their precautions with utensils and cups were great, and because we were in a small town, I felt safe with the amount of people inside. The catfish was very good: Hot, well- seasoned with a good cornmeal coating. Not greasy. The pinto beans were excellent, as was the tomato relish. The young lady who was our server was very attentive and nice. The restaurant itself is a throwback to older fish camps around on area lakes. It is very clean. I liked being able to choose from a large selection of sides, rather than the traditional beans, fries, and slaw. Being able to control the number of filets served is also nice. Neither my husband or I can eat enough to justify the "all you can eat selection. Prices are not what they used to be, but it isn't sticker shocking, either. Stopped by for lunch on a road trip. Huge portions, fresh ingredients, well seasoned, properly prepared - these folks know their stuff. We had fried crawfish tails, fried gator, Cajun shrimp tacos, Cajun pasta, gumbo, Boudin, and a bunch of sides. Everything was great, even the excellent remoulade sauce and perfectly brewed ice tea. It's very reasonably priced, especially considering the large servings. Be sure to try the tomato relish - not too sweet or sour - just perfect. Highly recommended. read more

I was there last night for my 50th high school reunion. Our waitress, Bree, did a very good job. The food was very good, well seasoned and hot. Just happened to find this place by total chance... staff was friendly and quick... I opted for the Thursday special.. chicken fried steak... now I'm a bit picky when it comes to CFS... this was so amazing... hot, fresh, a thick cut of meat and it literally cut with a fork. Ya'll that's not even the best part! I had some turnip greens and fried okra as my sides... the okra gave me flash backs to my childhood and found myself looking for my grandma... it was that frickin good. I've eaten here 3 times. The first time my wife and brother-in-law both got sick after eating there. The second time we did a pick up order and the orders were wrong and the food was, meh, at best. The 3rd time, tonight, we decided to give them a 3rd try and our food just sucked. Our po-boys had no sauce with ridiculous amounts of lettuce. My wife's shrimp po-boys was made with cheap pre-batted shrimp despite all the fresh shrimp in that place. The fries were cold and barely cooked. My seafood gumbo was supposed to have oysters, shrimp, crawfish and sausage which all I had was 3 tiny pieces of shrimp. We spend $70 3 different times and was let down. It's a shame. Hush Puppies has really degraded in both their food and their service. At a time, where new restaurants are popping up in Henderson (one), Hush Puppies should be doubling down on their quality of food and their service. Some of the menu items, like their fried catfish, are still very good. But their side items, such as french fries, coleslaw, okra, etc have all gone to cheap bulk type foods. Their burgers have taken a bad turn as well. Hush Puppies has always been a great meal for a great price I know inflation drives prices up and teenagers are expecting more per hour. It's my opinion that Hush Puppies is trying to keep their prices low by lowering the quality of food. But as a consumer, I'm willing to pay more for good quality of food and service. Possibly the biggest disappointment is the degradation in friendliness. Nobody smiles there anymore. Everybody looks upset. There's a high turnover in waiters and waitresses. People don't seem happy. Even Vernon doesn't seem to greet people are talk to people at the tables anymore. When the waiter brings you their food, they don't say "thank you". They avoid eye contact when they're walking by instead of asking you is there something you need. When you walk out the door, the staff doesn't say thank you, have a nice day, or even go bite a frog. They no longer care about their customers. Perhaps the management has changed? I don't know. But the last four visits have been increasingly disappointing. I'm sorry to say that I will not likely go back. That's a loss for me...and a loss for Hush Puppies. For years, Hush Puppies has been the best restaurant in Henderson. Hushpuppies used to be the best. We loved everything and went there every week! Recently they have gone to the dogs, increased their prices by a lot, no longer cater to Seniors. I just had my usual Monterrey Chicken Breast. It was dry and overcooked. Not even edible. Our son ordered a shrimp po boy, and he left almost the whole thing. It was like Dairy Queen shrimp, obviously frozen, tiny and had heavy greasy batter. He even asked before ordering if it had full-size shrimp. Server said yes. She apologized, but that's all. We live in Henderson and were so proud for such a good place to eat. The last three times, were terrible. We have no desire to go back. read more

There were at a minimum, 5 employees around us, and not one of them took the time to greet us or tell us to buzz off. They literally ignored customers coming in, waiting to be seated. I've heard this place was great, and we were in town for a basketball game so we stopped here. Saying it was great was an understatement. This place is wonderful! Our waitress, Diane, was extremely attentive. My husband had chicken fried chicken and he said it was one of the best he has ever had. My daughter had butterfly shrimp and said it was amazing. I had the catfish filets and all the fixings. Their tarter sauce was the bomb. Seriously I get so sick of under flavored tarter sauce....so many places barely make it distinguishable from straight mayo. Fresh lemon, tomato relish, perfectly cooked beans, excellent cole slaw. Sweet tea was perfect. We were too miserably stuffed to consider dessert. Our bill with a $10 tip was $47 for 3 adults and a 4 year old. I must add how much I loved the decor. Not your average service; rather, far superior. We were fortunate enough to sit in the section of "Tasha" the day we visited. She was so pleasant and friendly. Her recommendations on what to order was a perfect choice. We all enjoyed the meal very much. Not sure we will ever be in the area to stop by again, but we will certainly remember Tasha and her great service. Spoke with the owner of business upon leaving and he was a very nice man. He appeared thrilled that we had a nice experience. Gumbo, Cajun Shrimp Tacos and All you can eat Catfish were among some of our meals.
