I've noticed similar concerns mentioned in previous reviews, so it's surprising this hasn't been addressed. The overall veterinary care here has always been excellent, which I truly appreciate. However, the front desk staff represent the first impression of the clinic, and that matters. When I called, they said someone reached out to me and I looked through my phone, and no phone call or message was found. Really enjoyed our experience at the humane society. Came in after the new year looking to add another cat to our home. The newish humane society is huge! Lots of kennels, playrooms, etc. The entire facility was clean and I love that the cats gets to roam in their rooms rather than being locked in a crate all day. This isn't true for all of the cats but the vast majority. We walked through all the rooms and finally found our guy. The directions of how to pick an animal could have been a little better defined but there were staff going through the rooms that were readily available to answer questions. We just had to pick up the paper with the cat's info and bring it to the front. We were helped by Ezra who was amazing. Extremely caring and wanted us to know all there is to know. The one thing to know: they do not test their animals for FIV/FELV upfront, likely do to cost. They will do it within minutes after your cat chooses you. If you have multiple animals this could lead to issues if your cat tests positive. read more

I have entered the Tampa Humane Society before but today I followed through with the adoption experience. I love this facility. The access to the animals. The cat rooms, the different sizes in dogs, the rabbit room. It is all amazing. The staff is friendly and so caring to all of the animals. The Volunteers are so loving and helpful. Today we found our New Family member and just fell in love. They encouraged us to take him in the yard area for play time... reminding us that this was a rambunctious pup and wanted us to be aware of the type of pet we were looking at. We had previously had the same type of dog before he passed, but we appreciated that they would express that concern for those who might not be prepared for a lively energetic dog. The adoption process was easy. We provided our driver's license. They explain all medical details any behavioral observations. They provide you with numbers of 24 hour vets and names of health insurance for your pet. We paid an adoption fee they provided some first couple nights food incase we needed it. The store onsite gave a percentage off if you are adopting so we were able to make a couple of purchases there before we left with our new furry family member. The process was easy and exciting. The staff was extremely helpful. I would recommend it to everyone. I will tell you as I noticed that the very small dogs and puppies go very quickly. I adopted a 13 week old puppy about a year ago and we adopted a three-year-old cat soon after that. The staff was amazing. The reason I'm giving a new review now is because I went there again to help my friend adopt an adult dog. It was an amazing experience as the people working with us were very patient. We ended up going outside with three different dogs, but ended up with the one we looked at to begin with. If I could take them all home, I would. But the level of patience, considering how busy it was that day was above par. I feel like we took longer than most would, but we had to make sure that we had the right fit. I'm so happy to report that Charlie was adopted by a dear friend who signed a weaver, He is such a wonderful dog and has shown no bad behavior issues, my friend loves him !! My furbaby, Cupcake, comes here for her annual checkup. I have had the best service from the staff. Usually, during a non pandemic yr. - I would do a walk in visit at 730am or earlier. That was the key to getting my furbaby seen. It's different nowadays with the pandemic - visit online/call for the new process. I really like this place because they are honest about what she needs from an annual checkup to Trifexa prescription (I get it filled at Costco - it's cheaper) to getting her annual shots to renewing her rabies + adoption tag., etc. I have the privilege of owning a Morkie at a fraction of the typical cost of getting her from a breeder due to TBHS and am so thankful for the opportunity! read more

I am at a loss for words when it comes to this shelter. I went to introduce my dog to a rescue and see how they react to each other. The woman who helped in the introduction was very knowledgeable about my dog not correcting aggressive behaviors from the rescue and wouldn't send us home with the dog we came to see for that reason. We ended up walking out with a 12 week old puppy and could not be happier. Within a week this wreckless pup fell off the couch and had a swollen leg. We went back to the shelter to have her looked at which was in the intake area. I waited a long time to see the vet but during that wait, I realized that I have no clue how these people hold themselves together doing this job. I'll be taking the extra 5 minutes of driving every time whenever I need food, toys, collars or anything else, just to make sure my money is going to a good cause like this. read more

This place is full of liars and snakes, they will rush you through the adoption process and a woman will advertise her pet insurance to you throughout the entire process until you sign up for it even after declining several times, they attempt to upsell everything in the shop for pet supplies, and what else? they claim to be a no kill shelter but I please urge any animal lover to not put a pet up for adoption here, if they have no room or if the animal has diseases they will be put down immediately, there is no care for the animals here most of them have diseases from being packed in kennels downstairs, they eat terrible food and are depraved of any attention unless they are being put up to be viewed, if you adopt a dog or cat from here and they bite or are aggressive they likely spent too long in these conditions. read more

We adopted a cat from this place. The process seemed very rushed. He was an older black cat. During adoption they had someone come in to sell us pet insurance because "you know with shelter pets you take them home then there's lots of medical problems" which we should have taken as a sign to the level of care they give (don't give) these animals. I've attempted calling, emailing, submitting complaints, and leaving voicemails for help with this cat. It's been just under 2 weeks since we brought him home, followed all the instructions (my degree is in animal husbandry so it's not like im new to animals). He hasn't pooped and won't eat anything. In 13 days. The vet said he has double ear infections that "the shelter might think they treated but they never checked him again to actually see how he is doing". His kidney and liver levels were concerningly bad. He had an enema and was given a cat laxative to help but nothing is working and he still won't eat. The vet believes he has rotten teeth and that's why he's struggling to eat as well. We are syringe feeding him broth as we can. He will be going to an emergency vet when they have an opening. I've told the shelter this and they haven't responded at all. They seem like the place to push out animals that are sick so they can sell you pet insurance and then don't care if the animal lives or dies when it's out of their hands. 0/10 don't recommend and will never support this place again. read more

my Cat got out and was immediately picked up and brought to them from out of county. They should not have accepted an out of county animal. I found the person that turned him in and got all the details as to the time and date- but until that point several people repeatedly denied having ever come into contact with my cat. Once I had proof that they had taken him in and from a different county ( all documented on the paper work) they told me they had already adopted him out. They never posted his picture- as is required- on their site as having been found. He was there 9 days before they had given him to another family. Honestly one of the worst adoption/animal hospital experiences I have ever had. This is going to quite a long review because I have a lot of problems to cover. I adopted a 2.5 month old kitten here about 2.5 weeks ago. He was clearly neglected and not taken care of whatsoever. I had to bring to their attention that he had a respiratory infection, ear mites, and an ear infection during the adoption process. He also had numerous fleas on him that I was still finding days later. I have another cat at home that has been put at risk because of their ignorance which will now cost me more money. He was also sickly skinny and extremely hungry. During the adoption process we waited 3 hours to see someone. When you're finally seen, half the time is spent with a pet insurance saleswomen essentially forcing you to sign up. I brought him in for next round of shots and to check in his ears and nose to the animal hospital they run. I had an appointment for 8:30 AM and was not seen until 10:15. After my appointment I had to wait another 30 minutes just to check out. What's the point of making an appointment if you have ti wait over 2 hours? They tried to upswell me on everything possible in the office as well. When checking out my total was $195 instead of the $71 I was told. One of the medications he needed was added to the bill for $60. You can get this on Amazon for $20 same day delivery and they would not price match. Very scummy business practice. Avoid this place at all costs. They do not take care of the animals and fail to disclose issues and risks to other pets. For appointments find another vet. Very unorganized and lost. I though this place was great when I was choosing and adopting a dog (although in retrospect there may have been some red flags I ignored). Then I walked out the door. Now I'm very unhappy with the way a couple problems and questions Ive had since adopting have been systematically ignored to the point that I am convinced it is a deliberate practice of this facility to get the dogs out the door and from that point cut off all communications with the adopter. In particular, I had two substantive issues I needed help with as a novice pet owner. First, they gave me antibiotics to give my dog, who had a nasty cough when I adopted her. They told me to wrap it in cheese if she wouldn't eat it otherwise. I did this. She chewed the cheese for a second, noticed the pill, spit the whole thing out, then ate just the cheese bits off the ground, leaving the pill. I can't figure out how to get her to take the pills. All my calls and emails to the Tampa Humane Society asking for help have been ignored. They NEVER answer the phone (always claims they are too busy so to leave a message), they never return messages left at their number, and they never respond to emails. The first vet appointment I could get was a week and a half later, so I hope my dog survives until then. Second, they told me my dog had a microchip implanted and they gave me the number. They said they would email me later with more information about how and where to register this number. They never did. I have no idea what I am supposed to do with this number they gave and how to make use of the microchip. Again, they never answer the phone, never return calls, never answer emails when I follow up to ask for the information they promised me when I adopted the pet. Very frustrated with this experience. In retrospect, maybe I should have been wary. The adoption process was a bit of a hard sell to sign on the bottom line it seems when I think back on it. Worse, at one point a second Humane Society person came in, in a Humane Society uniform, and started talking to me about a particular brand of pet insurance. When I told her I wasn't going to buy pet insurance at that time, she got up and left the room without a word. Evidently this was an insurance salesman in effect posing as a Humane Society adoption counselor. It would have been one thing if she was there to talk to me in general about insurance, but, no, she was pushing a particular brand and had no interest in talking to me if I didn't want to sign up for that brand at the terms she offered then and there. read more

Sadly, there are people who buy pets without putting into consideration the labor intensive work it takes to owning a animal and the costs. Took our yorkie in for teeth cleaning he has been having issues for 3 weeks now. He shakes ,tail is always down his back is up and he litterly cry's like he is in pain. Not sure what happened I had him to doctors twice for this the only thing they came up with is a stiff neck. When you go to Tampa humane they have you sign papers that they are not responsible for anything, that should of been a sign. I've been meaning to get around to making this review but the situation still seems so unreal to me. I went to the humane society with my s/o 2 days in a row. May 28th and 29th. For our anniversary, we decided to add to our family by rescuing little paws. The first day we went (Friday), there were no puppies and the dog we wanted to see, we were told we're not allowed to play with because we had no intentions on getting her that same day (reason being it was coming close to their closing time adoptions couldn't be made). Fair enough. So we left and came back the following day (Saturday). On the car ride there, we saw puppies on their website and decided to take a look at these puppies prior to getting around to the dog we thought of taking home the prior day. We saw one we really like and grabbed his paperwork. His name being Zan (later named "Wrex"). The process of adopting wasn't long but the wait time to get to a representative was probably about 2/3 hours. Which we were fine with. We got all his paperwork and headed to the shops to splurge on our new little man! The following day (Subday) we received a phone call (around 9am) from Humane Society stating that one of the puppies in the litter has been tested positive for Parvo. We asked what we should do in this situation and the individual expressed to just watch out for the warning signs. Which we did, started up a routine with him after a few days and nothing ever seemed to change in his mood, eating habits, energy or his bathroom habits. He was great! The days were going by quite smoothly until we made it to Friday morning (June 3rd). He typically woke up 7am and would bark to use the bathroom, however this day is when he started showing all signs of Parvo. We called the humane society and left messages on their voicemail for someone to get back to us in regards to his health and tried to make an appointment to get him into a clinic asap. Finally we got a call around 11:30p stating we can bring him back and they will take care of him. Of all the individuals we spoke with Kim was extremely helpful. She called us everyday and even left voicemails on the condition of our puppy. Unfortunately he did pass away June 12th. I was offered a paw print and his ashes (the ashes I opted out of) and was told within a week that someone should be calling to inform me of when I could pick up his memorial items. Hadnt heard from anyone in a month. I know companies have been operating differently due to covid so I gave them a couple more weeks just to see if there might have been some delay. Nope, not the case. On top of throwing his collar and tag away I never received his paw print because they just cremated him and disposed of everything. Never was notified, if I hadnt reached out I wouldve never know. I would never recommend this company to my worst enemy. $225 to adopt a puppy seems like a steep price to begin with especially when rescuing these animals. On top of that, they are not checking their animals to truly send them to a forever home. Ive heard of too many horror stories with this company from friends and my s/o family (after the fact). I also feel like, when dealing with some of the individuals there that I was racial profiled. I was not treated with the same respect as other individuals of other races. Which is fine, im a paying customer nonetheless and should receive the same satisfaction as any other customer. But this isnt about me. Its about the animals! Why 4 stars? Because this is a spectacular service. --- --- --- I'm an animal lover, and one day I hope to take a dog home from here. I love coming by just to pet them and pay them a bit of attention. I'm not sure if the employees/volunteers of the Humane Society are a fan of people like me, but I feel like it's a good thing to go show the animals some love. I wish we were allowed to open the dog cages and pet the dogs, because I feel like that would be something that might be the difference in influencing a potential adopter. However, I recognize that this would potentially lead to a lot of problems with people accidentally letting the dogs out to run amuck. Amuck is a fun word, but not a fun situation. During my visit, I was surprised at the low number of cats, I hope that means folks of the Bay Area are picking up plenty of feline friends in the recent days.
