I posted about her in anticipation of her appearance on the adoption page. Their Instagram reposted my story days before she was put down.

In March 2025, I brought a stray Australian Shepherd, whom I named Joni, to Humane Colorado after she was abandoned in my neighborhood. She had been tethered outside for several nights with no shelter or adequate food. The night after I brought her in, there was a frost and temperatures dropped below freezing. I truly believed I was doing the right thing to protect her. Joni was about two years old, bright, affectionate, and gentle. I spent hours with her in my yard. She knew basic commands, played sweetly, and greeted my mom, boyfriend, and neighbors with calm friendliness. She was clearly a good dog who had been let down. I took her to "Humane" Colorado thinking she'd have the best shot at adoption. She had no microchip, so I surrendered her--believing it meant she would be cared for and placed in a new home, I mean who wouldn't want her? She was absolutely gorgeous. At intake, I was told I couldn't leave my contact info for any potential owners that might claim her from lost and found to tell them how I found her. I was not given a copy of the "surrender agreement" that I was verbally read. I thought e**th was in the case of a something as extreme as a rabid or deadly dog, not a dog like Joni. I mean she was literally hiding under my partner and I's seat in the intake room panting in fear, not engaging. I was told she'd be listed on the Lost & Found page for 3 days, then the Adoption page. She was, in fact, listed on the Lost & Found page--but she never made it to the Adoption page. I checked both pages multiple times a day. When I called to the shelter to follow up, I was told she had been put down six days after intake, following two behavioral evaluations. I went on-site to get more info on what happened. According to her intake transcript, she had barked and jumped at staff--a normal response for an anxious dog in a stressful environment. These actions were interpreted as behavioral red flags. The clerk I spoke to kept reiterating that "legally, we can't do anything with them for five days," as if that alone explained or justified the lack of transparency and the rushed decision to be put down. When I questioned the outcome, a staff member said, "Yeah, but unfortunately, you guys did bring her to a shelter that is really big, we..." implying that space and capacity played a role in her fate. Joni was killed under the guise of "behavioral issues," when in truth, she was a victim of an overwhelmed shelter system. She needed time, decompression, and compassion--not judgment in a chaotic setting she didn't understand. I believed I was giving her the best chance. Instead, she was gone in less than a week. Humane Colorado must do better. Clearer communication with the public, transparency around e*th*nasia and behavior evaluations, and more humane intake practices are urgently needed.

Instructions for their walk in hours
Debbie C.

They're the best, most thorough vet in Denver. However, their phone system either doesn't work, or they pretend they don't receive messages because they're so severely understaffed. They have walk in hours, but you better be in the parking lot by 7am. Ask for the day off from work. Be prepared to spend up to 6 hours in your vehicle for a vet to finally see your pet. Call their phone number and do NOT hang up until they get to you. They won't call back so don't leave a message even though the voice response system says so. Their voice response system doesn't work. It will take an hour or two waiting, so bring a charger for your phone. Get comfy. Bring a book or something. You pay with lots of money for quick service at a regular, vet or you pay with your time at DFL. Everything they did for my cat to finally determine he has stones: X-rays Ultrasound Full health exam where they found a heart murmur An antibiotics shot good for 2 weeks Pain meds Vaccinations An overnight stay at the clinic I left with a prescription to purchase special food for him, pain meds for 2 weeks, and his tag and paperwork saying he's vaccinated I was charged $170 for everything. This facility is a godsend.

Since his visit upon rescue Orange Boy is living his best life. Indoors! And he doesn't mind it one bit.

They deal with her professionally and with love. Dr. Sayer lets me sedate her before I bring her in and that helps a lot. She had a major middle ear infection, which you can't see by just looking. Dr. Sayer saw that something wasn't right and recommended surgery. Their surgeon was able to clean it all out and close it off to avoid further possible trauma. It was a very serious surgery that saved her life and it was only $1800. They have the best prices in town. Pearl had so much trouble with itching when we first got her. We tried everything. AHCD allergy tested her at a very reasonable price. It turns out that she's allergic to everything we walk in and around every day. She is now on an allergy medicine that is made for her specific allergies. She no longer has any sores or itching and is a happy girl. Everyone at ACHD takes the time to hear your concerns. They always offer options when available and have good solutions. They are all very good at what they do and they really love your pets!

Many times over the years, I show up on time only to be put in an exam room with my dog and wait 15-20 + minutes with no check in. I missed 1 appointment and was 8 minutes late to my last appointment due to road construction and they turned me away. Then my appointment for today they called and "scolded" me about my "history" with them and needed payment up front. Judy their receptionist used to be kind and friendly but not anymore. I am beyond upset and disappointed but will certainly feel good moving forward with another veterinarian. Would absolutely not recommend them to anyone as after 15 yrs this is how they treat their customers.

My dogs situation became somewhat of an emergency overnight. Dr Shelly was so compassionate and listened to what I wanted and gave me a price quote before doing anything. My dogs situation turned worse in the next week and had to take him back (nothing to do with the procedure that was done or how it was done) Dr Shelly and Jen were once again amazing and helped Saber. I had to take Saber back every 3 days and every time they made me feel comfortable and I felt like they truly cared about Saber. The whole staff was/is amazing. Thank you all for everything you have done.

This is based on three issues with three different cats. And these are not even complex, uncommon issues -- urinary issue, vomiting, and diarrhea. Most recently we brought a cat in because of diarrhea. We were prescribed a probiotic. They didn't tell us what to look for or what to do if it didn't work but after 9 days of treatment and no improvement I called to ask what they suggest next. I also asked if we should be concerned about it spreading to other cats since we are a multi cat household. The vet prescribed a medicine but gave no indication what it was for. I called and asked what are they treating. The kind person on the phone checked the notes and said diarrhea. Well, okay, but bacterial, viral, parasitic? What did you rule out with the first treatment and what are you testing now? Maybe I'm nit picking but this seems like basic, helpful medical information that should be communicated to a caretaker. I also failed to receive an answer about whether whatever they thought it was now would be contagious, which is frustrating because I told them another cat had similar symptoms. Super nice people don't get me wrong. Just completely underwhelmed.

First- 2 visits ago they had him listed as a 2 year old. He's been going there 3 years so it's not possible for him to age backwards. Plus they have his file scanned from his adoption showing his birthdate. I informed them he was 6. My most recent visit I see on his file that he is now 4. I crossed it out and changed it again back to 6. The reason this is serious to me is because they keep referencing his age when analyzing his conditions and saying blah blah "for such a young cat." But he's not 2. Or 4. He's 6. And his name also is not Oliver... I went in on a Monday and had bloodwork done. They were supposed to call the next day with results but didn't. And not the next day either. His vet had gotten sick and called out and it would've been under her specific file to call me, but given I had called inquiring I feel a different professional should've been able to at least convey the results to me more quickly. Finally, today I dropped him off at 7:45 for an ultrasound. I had been under the impression and told that it would occur between 9-12. I just called and the tech didn't even get there until after 11. Now he has to sit there for a bit longer and I had been counting down minutes to get his results. I loved this vet and I'm really sad about what's happening there. Not sure if the switched systems or something but normally they, and especially Kim, are super good at communicating and doing everything they can. Now I feel weird leaving him with them because they don't even know his name... age... when the doctor will be there...
