He was moved quickly to the triage area and then placed in a private area in the ER. All types of monitors were attached and several different medical personnel came in asking questions. Lots of tests were ordered and the ER doctor stepped in to tell us what they were doing and what types of tests were being ordered and why. I expected to be in the ER for 4-5 hours...we checked in around 11am and I left around 6:30p. Although we were there basically all day, lots of tests were run and the decision made to transfer him to Forsyth where they were better equipped to handle his care. Each test result was clearly explained. Every person we dealt with was courteous, kind, helpful and knowledgeable. When their expertise was maxed out they used wisdom over pride to make the best decision for him. I have no complaints or concerns about the experience we had at Northern ER. It's worth noting that they have an amazing coffee shop next to the lobby.

Today I had an appointment at Hugh Chatham for a MRI. Being the Saturday after Thanksgiving, it…read moreseemed to be pretty quiet. The regular check-in entrance for Imaging was closed with signage directing you to the Emergency Room entrance. The ladies there were so pleasant and helpful. They directed me to the main check in area. Following color coded signage made the twists and turns easy to navigate. The hallways were totally empty, which seemed odd but I appreciated not being around sick people, especially this time of year . I found the check in desk and again spoke with a team member who was extremely pleasant. She directed me to Imaging, again following color coded signage. I only waited a minute or two before I was called. The intake tech was also very nice and easy to talk to. She helped get me situated on MRI table. The MRI technician took the lead and again, I couldn't have asked for a better group of people. They made sure I was comfortable and had the emergency call button in my had before rolling me in. I wasn't the least bit concerned about becoming claustrophobic once they rolled me into the tube but clearly that's an issue for lots of people. They were very attentive to ensure I felt comfortable and relaxed. Except for the loud clanking noise (they do give you earplugs), it was a positive experience. The section of the hospital I was in appeared to be immaculately clean with no smells. Kudos to the cleaning crew members! I can't speak to what it is like to be a patient at this hospital, but for testing/imaging, my experience was top notch.

You should also know it's ok to advocate for yourself. I broke my ankle hiking and chose Hugh Chatham due to proximity to my house. About five minutes after arriving, the questions began about my insurance, employer, etc. At this time, I was out of it from the pain meds I received from the paramedics and the pain was starting to kick in again. After an x-ray was taken, I was told it was a sprain. I was almost immediately checked out without being able to receive so much as Tylenol for the pain. Instead, I was treated like I was drug seeking when I asked. My partner even had to hunt down a wheelchair himself because I couldn't walk on my ankle, the whole time feeling rushed to leave. We even had to purchase crutches the next day so that I wasn't hopping around on my good leg, because you don't need crutches for a sprain. If I had been there by myself that night, I could only imagine what that entire ordeal would have looked like. After two weeks, I still couldn't put weight on my ankle. I finally went to see someone after my boss recommended it, even though I was hesitant because I was treated so poorly at the ED. After I told my primary care provider why I came in and about my experience at the ED, this provider basically told me that I just needed to give it time as the ED concluded it was a sprain. I insisted on something... anything... as I had broken the same ankle years before and not only did I hear the pops, but after two weeks I still couldn't even put weight on it in a pool. My doctor reluctantly ordered a second x-ray at that time which showed multiple fractures and I was immediately scheduled with a specialist. Two weeks of not wearing a cast and repeatedly trying to put weight on it... following the ED's instructions for a sprain. While I understand that sometimes breaks cannot be seen due to fluid buildup, the treatment I received left me feeling like I was overreacting and drug seeking. While I felt validated after the diagnosis, the shame I felt after my visit still sticks with me. If you suspect something is broken, I would seek a different provider. I genuinely hope that they have changed how they treat their patients, but I highly doubt it. It's not the incorrect diagnosis that bothers me, but the treatment I received... or lack thereof.
