So, I had been wanting to try this place ever since it opened, but each of our trips to Door County never seemed to coincide with their business hours. Finally, on our last trip, the stars aligned and we made it in. It was soooo worth it. We had a bit of a wait, as they don't take reservations, and it is a VERY popular place. We sat at the bar and enjoyed drinks until our time came to be seated. The bar area has ample seating at the bar and there are several tables, as well. On one end of the room is a small bump out where they have a few items for sale (shirts, et). On the other end is a huge stone fireplace that actually sits in the middle of the building and separates the bar from the dining room. There are animal mounts everywhere, but not overly so. I ordered Hunherschnitzel (chicken) and my husband ordered Jagerschnitzel. Both came with sides of sauerkraut and red cabbage. For dessert, I got a slice of cheesecake. Everything was so delicious! We love German food and were hoping for the best. We got it! I see that they are closed till 2026....I hope it's to expand or remodel and not to close, because I definitely will be coming here again! 9/2025 read more

I'm glad we stopped at Hugel Haus for dinner. We ordered a pretzel and some potato pancakes to share as appetizers. Both were very good, and the emmentaler that came with the pretzel made it even better. For the main course I ordered the hühnerschnitzel. I ordered it with the hunter gravy on the side, but they forgot to do so--luckily, although there are mushrooms in it, it wasn't overpowering and it wasn't bad. The meal was pleasant, as was the setting. Our server was very good, attentive, and knowledgeable. We went earlier in the evening and it was not too busy. I think I'd visit again if I was looking for a place to eat in Door County. read more

One more thing- high quality German food and fun woodsy dinning room. Comfort food on another level. They often close in the off season so be sure to call ahead. read more

Sadly, the Hugel Haus owners did not renew their lease, so it is now closed, permanently. Some disagreements over the terms of the new lease, but we also heard that the owners, one recently married, were burnt out and wouldn't meet the demands necessary to keep it going. It was a good run and we will miss them. read more

Found this place on Yelp. Glad that they served food at the bar. It was much quicker than waiting for a table. They had baseball plying on multiple tv screens. This past October, we were in Door County during the very busy last weekend of the "season." Adding to the tourist rush, businesses were affected by a lack of staffing and supply chain shortages. As one can imagine, there was no room at the "inn" and dinner reservations, unless made months before, were impossible to get, and seating at popular walk-in spots often required an hours-long wait. Despite that, we did not go hungry. While most eateries were OK, a few stood out as exceptional and well worth a visit. One of the best is Hugel Haus, in Ellison Bay. We did arrive early for dinner, which may have helped us get seated immediately. The courteous hostess escorted us into the spacious main dining room, which had plenty of open tables, and sat us in front of the enormous fireplace, a pleasant touch that set the stage for what was to come. The menu featured a variety of typical German fare of schnitzel, wurst, spaetzle, and sauerkraut, along with Wisconsin cheese curds, pretzels, and various burgers. There's also a wide selection of German and local beers and German wines. Being a sausage lover, I couldn't resist the "Best of the Wurst" platter, which, according to the menu, includes "Locally made bratwurst, knockwurst, weisswurst, red cabbage, honey herb sauerkraut, German potato salad, stone ground mustard, Dijon, horseradish." It was superb, and I would not hesitate to order it again -- even though I'm eager to sample schnitzel. Hugel Hus is connected to the Hillside Inn. For our next visit, we're planning to stay there. Just need to remember to book early! read more

Hugel Haus - The "Best of the Wurst" platter. What a treat!. - German Near Me - Ellison Bay, Wisconsin

Outstanding! The best German restaurant we've ever been to. The jagerstrudel was phenomenal! The breading had a tempura flare to it and the sides of cabbage and kraut were top notch. The star of the evening was their Old Fashion. I got the brandy one and it totally made my evening...the best Old Fashion in the Door! read more

Hugel Haus - Jagerschnitzel - German Near Me - Ellison Bay, Wisconsin

Hugel Haus was by far one of the must stop dinners when up in Door County. The brat sampler appetizer was out of this world. We enjoyed so much we stopped by their supplier to pick them up for our at home bbq. Drinks were very well prepared and you must come hungry because the portions are very large. Hunter gravy on the schnitzel was very good as well. We went back for a second time for drinks and the staff was well trained and very customer focused. Will be back in the fall and cannot wait. read more

Carried out the best little picnic dinner! All the food was so good but the sauces were out of this world! The cheese curds and pretzel came with mustard sauces that we could have just drank! I was skeptical about a German spot for dinner but it didn't not disappoint! We will definitely be repeat customers. read more

Hugel Haus - Cheese curds, soft pretzel, and Jagerschnitzel - German Near Me - Ellison Bay, Wisconsin

Wonderful food--- BUT permanently CLOSED. . Glad we got to eat there last year. It was really good, old school

We were excited to try Hugel Haus based on all the great reviews and yummy looking photos, but we were actually a bit disappointed. There were some pluses and minuses to our visit, which I have listed below, but overall, this place is fairly average. Plus: We ended up getting food to go (see why in next line), and they made it super quick and packaged it up nicely. Minus: We really wanted to eat outside at the restaurant, mostly for social distancing purposes. However, the server told us that was impossible because they were "all set up for Oktoberfest" (which was happening the next day). That setup turned out to be just a tent over the picnic tables (see my photo)...which gave us the impression they were just making excuses. With COVID still being a factor, no restaurant with outdoor seating should ever deny patrons the option to eat outside, IMHO. Plus: The pretzel was really, really yummy...one of the best pretzels we've had. The dipping sauces it came with were also delicious. A must-order. Minus: The Jagerschnitzel was actually not very good. Yes, it looked good, and the hunter stew that came on top was quite tasty, but the breading on the pork was far too thick and way, way, way too salty. We really didn't like this dish at all. Plus: They have beer to go, and they had my favorite Oktoberfest beer on tap! Score! All in all, Hugel Haus is a fairly average German restaurant, ok if you are in the area, but I wouldn't go out of your way to eat here. read more

Great German food in this warm, traditional space. One of the tastiest meals I had while visiting Door County. We got takeout and ordered the wurst sampler, Jägerschnitzel dinner, and a portobello mushroom sandwich. Their dining area is inviting, intimate, and comfortable. There is a large bar, dining room, lounge area, and a large fire place in the middle, harkening back to a different era. It's also attached to a local, family owned inn, which definitely complemented the local vibe. Everything was legit tasty, it brought me back to fond trips to Germany and reminded me why I love German food. All of the different wursts were legit, and the variety of mustards to complement the sausages worked well together. The schnitzel was huge and well prepared, crispy, flavorful, without hammering you with salt. The cabbage and krauts were also great, and the portobello sandwich was really nice overall. My only regret was not being able to stay longer in Door County and trying more food from Hugel House! Highly recommend. read more

Not to be overly critical, but we are used to German restaurants in Chicago and Milwaukee. So we compared the schnitzel to those. HH seemed overly salty and lacked the flavor we were used to. Kind of tasted like chicken fingers. The bright spot were the martinis and mixed drinks. We would return just for those. Service was excellent in the bar and at the table. Ambiance was upscale and comforting. Maybe next time we will try another offering. read more

We visited here last night after checking into the adjoining Hillside Inn and had the curry wurst with a side of kugel and a cheeseburger with a side of spinach. A wonderful dinner all round! read more

My only regret is that we didn't come here sooner. German cuisine is not always easy to find, but we decided to give Hugel Haus a try yesterday. I've had substandard German food too many times, but this place is special. I haven't been to Germany yet (going this summer), so I can't compare to how the food is there, but everything was wonderful. It's obvious that they prepare their schnitzel from scratch, not pre-breaded and deep-fried from a food supply company. I went with the Huhnerscnitzel (chicken schnitzel) because I'm wary of tough pork and beef schnitzel. It was perfect. It comes with cabbage, sauerkraut, and spaetzle. I don't like cabbage in any form, so they graciously offered to substitute mashed potatoes for the cabbages and it was definitely homemade from real potatoes in their kitchen. For future visits, I'll try the other schnitzels. They have a very nice selection of tap German beers, too. We'd been to the location when it was the Fireside restaurant, and the decor inside is perfect for a German restaurant, right down to the mounted game on the walls. They have a good children's menu, and the mac and cheese is legit. We'll definitely be regulars. read more

Went with a party of 9 (including young kids) at 5:30 on a Thursday and spent one hour waiting on the pleasant front yard drinking and looking at the hummingbirds. The kids even found a large toad! Also the ambiance is so cosy and great live music. read more

Good, because who doesn't love a German restaurant in Wisconsin! We were a little taken aback to find that this place is in a motel, ha ha! They seated us immediately but it was a long finger-drumming wait for beverages... which when they arrived were pretty good. They have a little work to do in the kitchen however: Best of the Wurst was, sadly, dry - the method used to reheat the sausages resulted in loss of all life and moisture. The seared salmon suffered a similar fate. We did expect that a WI beer haus would at least have a handle on the sausages if not the fish. The accompaniments to the wursts were all kind of sweet. Alas, but kudos to them for trying. Portions were generous enough for a next day helping. We would try them again. read more

Hugel Haus is worth the drive to Ellison Bay. It's authentic German food and has a nice variety German beers on tap! Just had another awesome meal tonight, my wife had the Beef Stroganoff and I had the Jager Schnitzel and both were excellent! Servers were very friendly and efficient and the bar is not a bad place to enjoy a beverage before a very solid German meal! They should serve bread with the meal, but I know that they want to sell you a giant warm pretzel which is a good choice if you are extra hungry! If you like German food this is a must try while in DC! Highly recommend and reasonable for a DC restaurant! read more

Super fun bar with a great vibe. Bartenders were friendly and fun even though it was busy. Appetizers we tried were all good especially the potato pancakes and giant pretzel. Stopped in for dinner on a Saturday in October. Very busy, but we found a few spots at the bar. Best Manhattan we've had in Door Co. Both delicious and we left stuffed. Will be back. read more

We usually stay south of Egg Harbor, and rarely venture this far north. I had seen it, but didn't think much of an unassuming building attached to a motel. We recently stayed in Sister Bay, though, and one of our group was interested in German food, so it was just up the road. Tremendous! The food was great. We got three of the schnitzels and the fondue appetizer. Our server, Cody, a transplant from Florida, was extremely capable. The dining room was much more pleasant than the exterior would predict. Highly recommended for the food. Sadly, with 300% markups, the wine was overpriced, as is almost always the case. read more

Stopped in last October. We had heard great things from locals and decided to give it a try. It's kinda surprising this is the only German restaurant in NorDoor. We were SO happy we decided to try them out. Good beer and wine selection. Food was fantastic. The ambience was like a Swiss Lodge with the high wood ceiling and the massive fireplace. My wife and I dined here last night and totally enjoyed the experience. The restaurant is not big, but it did attract a crowd. The German food is excellent! We each had different "schnitzels" and were both very pleased. The portions were very large and prepared exceptionally well. My wife could not finish hers, so I had to "help" which allowed me to try 2 different varieties. They were both awesome. The spatzel was perfect as well. I normally am not a fan of red pickled cabbage, but what I was served last night was different and I enjoyed all of it! My wife raves about their kraut, but I draw the line and don't indulge in that. The service was very friendly, helpful in explaining some of the dishes. She also checked on us a number of times. There is not much true German food on the north end of Door County, so this place is a true gem. Can't wait to go back again! read more

The service was excellent in the bar and dining areas. It's deceptively spacious inside which is great as I can get claustrophobic. Most importantly, however, was the quality of the food. Obviously German. fantastic. The food was great and filling. loved everything. So it was a little bare for patrons as we visited at the very very end of the season late Oct 2022. (yeah, i'm a busy guy and reviews took a back seat.) This place was well recommended and still impressed us. Beer, whitefish, wurst, Weinerschnitzel, we tried it all. The waitress knows tourists, and shared about the area and more places to see on the short visit. i remember the dining room like an open lodge. good times, don't pass it up. read more

Great food, great service, and would recommend it to anyone. The outside of the building doesn't do it justice.

Had an amazing dinner here! We started out with the giant pretzel, which 4 of us fought over because it was THAT good. We had the weinerschnitzel Friday night special and the curry wurst. They were both fantastic! I'm not a huge German food lover, but this was top notch. Can't wait to come back and try everything! read more

We went for dinner here last night. Admittedly, it was not our first choice, but our two other favorite restaurants have closed since the last time we were in Door County. And, well, everything happens for a reason, because now we have a new favorite - this place. Our waiter Daniel was so kind and helpful. My husband and I each had an Ayinger beer - he had the Celebrator, I had the Maibach. Both wonderful. For dinner, I had the Käsespätzel with pork schnitzel, and my husband had Jagerschnitzel. MY GOSH. I haven't had German food this good in years. That honey herb sauerkraut? Only thing missing was some German tunes to make the experience feel even more authentic. read more

This is some of the (or perhaps THE) best German food I've had (including in Germany!). Been going here since 2020 -- both in the restaurant and carry out. I love the portabella mushroom schnitzel (and all the other schnitzels, but seriously try the vegetarian schnitzel -- you won't regret it), the cheese curds, potato pancakes, wurst (best?) sampler. Phenomenal burger. Great beer selection, and really nice "ski lodge" type dining room with a big cozy fire. Cocktails are very good, too. And love that they stay open all winter! Super nice people doing great work. read more

We tried to eat here when we visited DC in 2022 but the restaurant was closed the night we went. There was a sign on the door stating that they were closed due to COVID. We were happy to see that the parking lot was full when we pulled in at 5:15 last night. I was worried that we would have a long wait since they don't take reservations. But we were lucky to find a parking space and only had a 10 minute wait for a table. The bar is spacious so we waited there until our table was ready. Our waitress was busy but attentive and friendly. I had the special, which was a chicken schnitzel served with spaetzle, red cabbage and sautéed spinach. The schnitzel was huge! The breading was heavier than I like, but the chicken was moist and the sauce was flavorful. My husband had the jagerschnitzel that came with red cabbage, spaetzle and also a side of honey herb sauerkraut. He commented that the red cabbage was bland and the spaetzle was nothing special. He's a German food connoisseur and is particular. He had a draft beer and I had a perfect old fashion. It was a good dinner to wrap up a nice DC get away! read more
