Amateur grumpy bartenders during weeknights that don't have any sense of awareness (heads down) and as other reviewers point out - crappy attitudes. You can stand at a not so busy bar for 10 minutes or longer to wait to order. Tap beer was definitely not right either. Fun bar that's tucked into a side street. If you're looking for a dive bar vibe, this is the place to be. Their drinks are inexpensive and strong, & they have plenty of games as well. Awesome, interesting, huge bar surrounded by video and bar games to make the night just the right amount of interesting. Cozy, friendly staff and crowd with just the right amount of dive. God I love a dive bar*, and Hudson House is the king of 'em. The rumor is that this is the oldest bar on the island, and it certainly feels like it is when you walk in. It's dark, they don't serve food, for some inexplicable reason there are modern games all over the place, oh and it's old. Really really old. I love all of it. The place was clearly a house back in the day, and in my humblest of opinions whoever did the retrofitting did a great job. Who wouldn't want a huge bar full of people looking for cheap beer instead of a living room, am I right? The fine folks who run this place also understand that you might have places to be, and being the forward thinkers they are, have set up a to-go beer section by the front door (there must be a bell that goes off in the back, because every time the door opens the kid who sells to go cases comes running). Hands down one of the best and most unassuming dive bars in existence! Tucked within a residential street headed towards the beach and looking like Hudson decided to convert his first floor man cave into the ultimate bar, Hudson House is one of those rare bar treasures that's easy to miss without catching a glimmer of their signage or colorful art logo. But upon entering you quickly take in an awesome bar experience that's filled with cheap drinks, plenty of arcade & bar games, a bad ass jukebox, and the perfect spot to people watch among both vacationers and regulars alike. The bar is cash only, but between the the somewhat shady ATM and most drinks ranging between $4-5 its very manageable. $4 let me the savor the likes of Magic Hat's Single Chair, their seasonal pumpkin ale, and Yuengling; while $5 secured a Victory Hop Devil. There's also a widespread assortment of bottles to drink on site or enjoy as take away, and boozy libations for the non beer drinkers. Upon entry you can't help but make note of the full sized shuffle board game while you overhear people taking a shot at the strongarm punch tester. But theirs also a solid pull table, a classic arcade collection, a bowling game, and good reason to say PINBALL ALERT thanks to the classic Playboy table. Add in the classic punk and rock filled jukebox and there's plenty of ways to have fun within, especially when your song encourages barroom dancing. Hudson House is one of those perfect additions to LBI and the Jersey Shore. But its also one of those kick ass neighborhood dive bars that you wish you could find in your hood! read more

There are sports bars, cocktail bars, craft beer bars and probably a few other places to grab a beer I haven't named. Hudson House is none of those things. This looks like a bar that was popular in any city in the US, back in the 50's or 60's. They still have a Strike 90 bowling machine (sorry folks, didn't play so I have no idea what it costs) and even rarer, a shuffleboard table. The kind with metal pucks that you slide down the length of the butcher block table. For those of you unfortunate enough to have never played, you should stop in just for the experience...a real piece of Americana. Dark and forbidding when you first walk in, it's a friendly place once you sit down. Like I said, a real piece of Americana, not a trendy, touristy bar. read more

Bartenders take care of locals first - renters please don't get frustrated plenty of booze to fill you on tap. I've been hanging in LBI for the past 13 years, and I rarely venture out into the night life. Most of the bars on the island just aren't my scene, and it seems kind of pointless to spend money out in an overpriced club when you can drink microbrews on your deck in the ocean breeze. However, I was bringing a handful of friends to our family beach house and wanted to see if I could find a fun place we could hit on a Saturday night. I logged into Yelp and searched..... lo and behold, a bar listed as a "dive" in LBI? With all 5-star ratings? I had to check it out. The bartenders were as friendly and awesome as could be, the beers were relatively cheap, and the ambiance was fun. Very mixed crowd, from 21 year olds to couples in their 50's and 60's. We didn't stay very long, but we had a great time. I'll definitely be back next time I'm in LBI for the weekend. read more

Dive bar on the island has been here for years and for some reason I don't think I ever went in. Very friendly staff (Casey) and fun atmosphere. Full size shuffleboard, nice pool table, darts etc - lots of beer to choose from. Never any trouble in the place but be forewarned- it's cash only! No food. Just booze and games. This is my kind of bar! A small, quiet, divey bar sandwiched between houses on the street. You would drive right past it without thinking twice if you weren't looking for it and although it has a small private lot, a lot of people walk or bike there so it doesn't look like anyone is in there either. They have darts for free, a pool table, boxing game ($1.00 for two hitS), shuffle bowling ($0.50 for 10 frames), a free shuffleboard, and super shot ($50 per game). There is also an older jukebox with a solid selection from older No Doubt to Santana to Janis Joplin to Forest Gump soundtrack. We had a blast at this bar. So much so, we were there for a couple of hours, left to get food at Cheg, and then came back because we were enjoying ourselves so much. There is no kitchen, just some chips and pretzels. There was some confusion about drink prices. When we were first there, all of our mixed drinks (Captain and coke, Jameson and ginger, and Jack and diet) were all $5 - later that night, the other bar tender said it was $7 per drink but only charged us $5 after we told him we were paying differently before. Beer was about $4.50-6. Small crowd, not too empty, not too loud. Bartenders were all younger, cool guys who were fun to talk to and joke with. Another young guy posted out front to check IDs was also fun to talk to while people stole a smoke. read more

Awesome dive bar. Wood everything, shuffle board, darts, billiards. This is the type of place that you should be drinking in down the shore. Everyone that we encountered was friendly. It felt like everyone was a regular, even if they obviously weren't. Cash only is the only drawback. There is an ATM in there somewhere. I liked the selection on the old school jukebox. Great place to go if you want that nostalgic feel. When you walk in the drunken ghosts of the past send you that welcome feeling. The beer is cold and the service is friendly. Best place to go on LBI if you are looking to pound some lagers or do some shots. Don't look for a "la la pink lollipop with a spot of lime sweetened vodka adorned with a rainbow colored umbrella." Hudson House is seriously throwing some local vibes out to the world and I am *here* for it. We were driving back to the mainland and decided to stop in for a beer or two since it was early still. You drive up to a house with minimal signage, a small narrow parking lot and a TON of parked bikes. I was in shock of how big the space was inside. The bar runs right down the center of the first floor of the house with plenty of stools and tables littering the aisles. There is a pool table, shuffleboards and other gaming stations at the rear. The second side has a few dart boards, restrooms and even more seating. Even though it was still daylight outside, you would not know it from our seats. The windows barely showed any natural light and the bar lights were dim. They only accept cash, which thankfully we had, so we ordered a few rounds and enjoyed people watching. It is pretty cheap compared to some of the other places that have been popping up all over so I was not complaining with $5-6 well drinks (I think?). This is a must stop for dive bar lovers and those who just want to relax away from the crowds. read more

When you first walk up to the HUD it is extremely sketchy and you might have thoughts of turning around and going elsewhere. I urge you NOT to leave. This place is so much fun, low key, and really laid back. Really cheap drinks and GREAT beers on tap. Plenty of great games to participate in that keep the good times rolling. The shuffle board table is the place to be! The only downside- sometimes you get some nasty newbies who think they own the place and want to erase names off the shuffle board chalk board. Picture this: My friends and I are on LBI looking for a good time. We're city folk and wary, but decide to take a chance on the local bar scene. Since we've seen the pink Nardi's party bus around town, we decide to head there. Imagine our surprise when we see a line out the door! A particularly intrepid member of our group sidles up and asks if there is a cover. There is. It's $10. What the fuck? For some tacky-ass "tavern & grille" with a no-name band from nowhere? I don't think so. we head down island to the Marlin. Same effin deal. Finally we tumble into the Hud, right around the corner. No line, no cover, so far so good. What?!? $20 covers all four drinks?!? SIGN ME UP. We spent the rest of the evening happily crushed into the crowded little Hud, drinking cheap Blue Moon on tap (served with orange slices, natch) and G&Ts while getting tips on how to get the perfect punch on the bar's punching bag machine. You have to try it if you go. My high score's 678. Think you can beat that? If not, there's a host of other bar games waiting for your triumph. Bottom line: so far the only place I've found on LBI that's better for drinking than my fridge at home. read more
