Unfortunately, the actual pub doesn't serve food. The pub staff are always really nice even when they're busy. The clientele range from older men to hipsters to young professionals to everything in between. It's a really good place to grab a pint and they even allow four legged friends. I had a lovely time here last night listening to a blue grass band. There was lots of people there and even some dancing. The atmosphere was great and we really enjoyed ourselves! Now that I've listed all the positives, I do need to talk about the negatives. The pub needs a restoration as it is beginning to look a little worn. For example, the carpets need to be replaced and it could do with a fresh coat of paint. However, the place is pretty clean for a pub! This is pretty minor as the other elements are way more important to a night out. On the other hand, this is also part of the vibe. Overall it's a charming aspect of the community that I'm glad is around!

Grow is a new venue just opened that joins the selection of hipster venues in Hackey Wick…read more Just like Number 90, Crate Beer and Turntables, Grow is located right next to the canal, with a lovely outdoor beer garden, right on the canal edge, full of plants. Stocking a selection of craft beers and ciders, with an outdoor BBQ including Mezze and wraps, it's a lovely venue to spend a lazy afternoon wistfully by the river. The beer garden however does close early evening, but the indoor remains open and has space for live bands. This is a charming venue, very much in keeping with its local counterparts and prices are very reasonable for both food and drink. I'm loving grow right now because I don't think many people know about it and it's hidden and off the beaten track, so it's reasonably quiet and you can get a seat very easily, however I am not sure what it's going to be like when people realise it's here as I expect it'll get busy as soon as people do. Whilst I want them to succeed, I just hope it doesn't grow too much to ruin it's character.

The place wasn't air conditioned, so I had a bit of a Marilyn Monroe moment as I walked past the fan and into the bathroom area. I'm not sure I'd make it back here again (it's a bit far) but it looked like a cozy, intimate, and fun place if you're into the slightly strange. As I'm about to move away from East London for a quieter life in Hampshire, I decided this would be the best place locally to have my last supper. I wasn't wrong. I booked a table for 5 on a Saturday night I didn't book it until late afternoon but they were able to accommodate us. It's a set menu only on a Saturday night (I forgot to ask how much that was but it worked out, including wine, beer and a couple of spirits to around £30 per head). For that you get meze starters cold starters such as taramasalata, hummus, delicious aubergine bake thing etc with constantly topped up fresh sesame seeded bread and more dishes being brought out, then hot starters such as cheese & spinach filo parcels, little lamb kofte kebabs, breadcrumbed fish, grilled haloumi etc. By now you're quite full (especially if you overdid it on the fresh bread with your hummus) and you think it must be the end, when you're told you can order more (as much as you like) meze starters, it's all included in the set price. So you order more of your favourite items. And then, when you are well and truly stuffed, you are brought out your rather large main meal! Mine & my friends were a mixed grill & salad with lamb, herbed sausage (and I can't remember what the 3rd thing was but it was delicious anyway) and I'd already advised when I booked that my brother's family were vegetarian / ate fish so theirs was 2 fabulously cooked melt in the mouth swordfish steaks. And finally, after all that, we were brought out 2 large platters of very refreshing fresh fruit slices (kiwi, pineapple, grapes etc). The waiter & waitress looking after our area were excellent and very attentive always on duty watching, without being obvious, when any table had finished a dish / needed topping up or someone wanted them to come over, and the atmosphere, with the Turkish live music / singing was happy, fun and relaxed like a family party. It was a real ideal family restaurant and I'm kind of kicking myself for not going more often before I moved away!

There is a very good reason why this pub happens to have Iron Maiden playing on repeat - this was…read morethe pub that they played at before they because one of the biggest heavy metal acts of the 80s. Yeah, this is basically the pub that every Iron Maiden fan ends up at when they go to London (though I mustn't be such a huge fan because, well, I didn't realise that this pub existed until recently). Mind you, it isn't the easiest of pubs to get to, but it isn't bad. Hey, they even have some good beer on tap, but yeah, it's the Iron Maiden that attracts me.
