Listen, the main reason this place has got three stars is because of the daiquiri. Let's get to…read morethat in a minute. I'll be honest, this place isn't really me. Remember Gatecrasher? It's impossible to think of how this place was that, now that it's had a re-fit. My mate and I were trying to suss it out and, although I like a lot of the elements, it's a bit disjointed -- there's beautiful tiling at the entrance matched with quaint al fresco style cafe tables and chairs, placed next to diner-ish booths, with a big open hall of a space by the bar, replete with Victorian boxer images on the walls. It's all lovely, but I'm not sure it matches. We decided it might be a sports bar for hipsters. There are TVs everywhere and lots of advertisements for the upcoming games they're showing. I don't know much about footie, but there is lots being shown, so I guess it'd be the whole season. Or what ever you call it. I didn't dig the "commandments" that pop up on the screens -- the cult thing is too force fed for my tastes. I didn't like it about Reds and I'm not a fan here. I wasn't sure I liked content of the messages, either. Speaking of Reds, that's pretty much how I'd describe the branding vibe here, only they're preaching footie and boxing and other sports over ribs. What did I like? The bar staff -- these guys were really solid and good fun. Hard working, fair at the bar (I hate it when they don't serve in order), and made a damned fine drink. Before even getting started, he asked how I like my daiquiris: nice. I said a teensy touch on the sweeter side, but not crazy. He let me try it before serving -- also impressive -- and it was way up there in my top daiquiri times. Appleton White was the go-to: good call. To established cocktail folk, I guess that doesn't sound amazing. However, you'd be surprised how hard it actually is to get a decent one -- even though they should always be a basic balance -- so for that I was really chuffed. Clientele weren't my scene, but it was Friday night? Anyway. If you want a good cocktail, seems like they've that covered... which feels a bit strange when surrounded by spray tanned ex-Gatecrashers (I'm guessing?) next to Liverpool vs Arsenal (the first teams I could think of) but perhaps this quirky mix is part of the charm. Or part of finding their feet. Check 'em out. They also serve pie, I think!

The bar staff are fab and offer cocktails not on the menu, such as espresso martinis (my fave). We had some fun trying different versions and they were goood. FYI Tia Maria can work instead of Kahlua. They have created an outdoor area for the summertime which as a location has much to be desired (right next to a very busy road) but is still nice enough to be in the sun. The bar itself inside is nothing to write home about and is a little dark for my taste but they do have a pool table and a table football (not many have these too and I enjoy it a lot). I will be going back here, especially as it is dangerously on my walk home from work.

While it's good that it gets so busy in terms of atmosphere and banter, it can sometimes get unpleasantly overcrowded, and you get the impression that the bouncers don't really care. Thus, getting a drink at the upstairs bar (the more lively area of The Box) usually takes a fair while. The beers themselves are priced similarly to those in The Arc and Trio, but they do offer a nice selection of bottles here (Desperados obviously being the best) - although you'll be paying around £3.30 for a bottle. During the day, The Box serves reasonable food (the pizzas are probably the pick of the bunch) and is usually frequented by students playing pool and watching SkySports News, meaning there is always a good atmosphere in this place. Overall, The Box is a good venue for ending the night if you can't be bothered with town, but it is equally good as a short stop on the way to town; it's a classy bar but also student friendly, which makes for a good atmosphere, and I'd particularly recommend it to anyone who smokes, as it has perhaps the best smoking terrace in Leeds.

The decor is flash, with plush leather seating and shiny black marble floors. Such decor makes The Box stand out from the mostly basic, traditional pubs on the Otley Road. Although slightly over priced, the variety of drinks is vast and serves my favorite,(a nice cold bottle of Desperado's) as well as cocktails. The clientele is mostly the richer student (surely that shouldn't be possible!), therefore the fishbowl drink is a popular and recommended drink to purchase on a weekend booze-up. The menu includes breakfast in the morning, gourmet burgers, salads, pizza and other pub meals, tarted up a bit. The food is presented as a mini art form, however portions seem rather small for what you pay. (especially as surrounding pubs offer such cheap and tasty food offers) At the weekend The Box is hoarded with students and there is often a queue at the door. The club evenings are more the definitely a hit with the locals and well dressed students. Chart hits are played until the early hours of the morning. The terrace is nicely decorated in leather also for the smokers, those with a coat and those too drunk to care! The box has a trendy, chilled out vibe during the day more suited to me. Nevertheless friends of mine live for a drink and dance at The Box at the weekend!

Being a veteran and lover of the Christmas german market beer hall that graces Millenium Square…read moreevery year, I was caught in two minds about going to Bierkeller. My first thought was YESSS!!!! It'll be like the amazing nights I get to have every Christmas, but I can have them any time I want! But then I stopped and thought - would this ruin the novelty of singing along to many an anthem played by the wonderful Manny and his oompah band? Would it actually take some of the joy out of one of my highlights of the year? I chose to give it a go eventually, and have now been twice. I've taken in the experience after work on a weeknight when it's a little quieter, and also on a full on weekend evening when you get the full experience. The weekday evening came first, and left me wanting. The drinks are expensive - around £8 for the cheapest stein I think they were, and I had to wait for my drink for way too long considering there were only a couple of people in the queue, and the bar staff weren't very nice when I eventually did get served. They weren't rude or anything, but there were no smiles and didn't seem to care how long it took for anyone to get their drinks. Fortunately the place itself looks wonderful - almost like a proper beer hall but smaller. This saved it from being a bit of a nightmare first trip! Anyway, after being really quite unimpressed I nearly gave up on the place for good, but decided I should try it out at the weekend before I do. Fortunately, this was MUCH more like it! First of all, the staff were far more on the ball, and seemed to be enjoying themselves a little more. The drinks were no better, but the novelty of the stein was still there. But most importantly, the atmosphere was completely changed. Once this place gets packed out, everyone is clearly up for a big silly night of singing and glass clinking (although the latter is discouraged!). Once the oompah band came out I was back to loving the experience again. So, if you were to head into the Bierkeller at any other time than a Friday or Saturday night, I'd knock a star off my score. BUT if you do go on a Friday or Saturday, add one on. Once the atmosphere kicks in it's a joy to be there, but bear in mind you'll probably have to book seats in advance as we did.

It was mid-afternoon so I knew it was unlikely that we'd see the full musical show or get the full atmosphere, so we were just expecting a pleasant pub experience. What we had didn't come close. The venue itself looks like a lot of fun - long wooden benches, ceiling beams, brick archways, It's theatrical rather than authentic, but I think it works - I'm pretty sure it's designed to poke a little bit of fun at itself. And I can imagine it's a memorable experience to glug a tankard or two, cosily squeezed between your friends in a corner. We sat down where we could fit on a bench, shimmied off our soaking raincoats and muscled in between two guys who'd clearly been there a while (indicated by the empties around them) and a few girls who were surrounded by shopping bags. Being underneath the Sports Bar, I imagined it being a little male-orientated so it was nice to see some post-shopping ladies grabbing a beverage next to us! However, then I laid eyes on the waiting staff. All the men were dressed smartly in black shirts and black trousers and they were all a wide range of ages. All the female waiting staff, however, were basically teenage girls trundling around in poor-quality skimpy leaves-nothing-to-the-imagination leiderhosen. Talk about your double standards! And I know it probably sounds prudish - buxom barmaids are quite the stereotype and I appreciate it can be seen as "part of the experience", but it was just plain tacky. Really tacky. More than anything, not a single waitress could muster a smile the entire time we were there. They just mooched about by one corner of the bar looking fed up and miserable. ...which then leads on to the terrible service! We couldn't actually get anyone's attention to come up and serve us for a start. We tried to make eye contact, we waved, we shouted when the waitresses passed us, but each time they had their eyes down and strode right past us. Eventually we did manage to order drinks and food and we found that being able to pay for a round of drinks at the table is a really nice touch. And the menu itself was exactly what you'd expect, bursting with bratwurst and schnitzels and pretzels. However, the food really wasn't anything special. I had fries and a frankfurter and they arrived lukewarm and pretty average. For average pub food prices, I knew it wasn't going to be gourmet, but I expected more for my money. The place was only half full and it was late afternoon, so it wasn't like they were struggling to get orders out to a busy restaurant. Overall, I would never go back there. It's tacky, the beer is overpriced, the service is appalling and there are too many wonderful bars/pubs/more-appealing rainy street corners in Leeds to bother going back to the Leeds Bierkeller.

However, it was loads of fun and I'd recommend it for anyone who fancies 45 minutes of ridiculousness! Aside from the general levels of fun, the staff all seemed very friendly and everything was run smoothly. I did come out with a lump near the old coccyx from the ice slide - do NOT sit down too far into the ring or you'll bash it on the jumps! But we paid £16 for a 45 minute session where we got to endlessly run up the lovely snowy slope (very impressed by the real snow!) and race back down again on either section. Also, we were all pretty tired from running up the slope by the end so the amount of time is probably spot on. Oh and another recommendation - do your tobogganing with at least 2 people in front/behind one another. Alone you can all too easily go off course and grind to a halt, but in a line you soar down like a majestic, errm, penguin?? Next time I'll definitely go for the skiing though!
