We're already back in the US, so I can't remember the names of the dishes: we got some some kind of rice vermicelli dish, ma po tofu, stir fried vegetable medley, and vegetarian dumplings (see photos). We really love this model, small, cheaper dishes so you can get more variety to your meal. Never have I ever been treated like this in America. This sucks! We waited more than 30 mins for our take away food. I had to ask how much longer for our food to be ready. The server said 2 mins but I'm sure our food wasn't made until he went in to remind them of our order. They were probably prioritizing the food of the people dining in. Waited another 5-10 mins for our food. I had to ask for utensils but they don't have plastic spoons. How are you supposed to eat soup with a fork and chopsticks?!? Smh... never again!!! Mink was craving Asian food again (after 2 meals in Italy) and so we looked at different options online. Based on photos of the food, we decided to give Mao Hunan a try. I made the commute myself and got us takeout. When I got there, only 4 tables were occupied but shortly after I ordered my takeout, the entire restaurant was full and there were people waiting outside! I seriously was getting excited to try the food after seeing this. While waiting, I noticed their modern and clean decor so I wasn't worried about the cleanliness of the restaurant. It only took around 15 minutes or so to get my order. We got a fried rice (Riso saltato di Changsa con salsa soia uovo e verdurefried rice with egg vegetables and soy sauce I think) and beef dish (possibly Manzo con pepe e verdure beef with pepper sauce and vegetables). Not 100% sure on the names of the menu items because I showed him screenshots of what we wanted from customer posts. I also asked for spicy sauce on the side along with a fork and spoon for Mink. Unfortunately, they only offer chopsticks. I rushed back to the hotel so we could eat. The bag was pretty heavy and when I opened up the containers, I could see that they were very generous with the beef. They took great care to pack the beef dish and the chili oil. It was wrapped up very well with Saran Wrap to prevent any leaks. Great attention to detail on this. I let Mink dig in first since she was starving at this point. All I could hear was "aroi" which means delicious in Thai. When I finally ate a few bites, I could see what she was talking about. It was unexpectedly really good. The chili oil also had a slight kick to it so it didn't disappoint. I'm starting to embrace Mink's Asian food cravings in Europe now because we have been finding some amazing places to eat. This place reminds me of some food I had while in China so the reviews are accurate. For those of you in Milan that haven't been to China, this is just like eating from there. All of it for only €21! What amazing value for what you get! Fast forward and Mink wanted Asian food again! She specifically said to go back to Mao Hunan because she really liked it the first time. It's extremely rare we go to the same restaurant twice in a trip but we did. This time we ordered a Tagliatelle di riso con manzo e germogli di soiarice tagliatelle with beef and bean sprouts and Ravioli di maiale in salsa Sichuan piccante dumplings of pork in Sichuan spicy sauce. First, the decor and service are both emblematic of a 5-star restaurant. I'd be surprised if anyone were to disagree on either of those points. And the food? Well, Gong's menu and food were not what we are accustomed to eating in the NYC metro area, or anywhere else I've had Chinese food in America, including many times in Boston, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Yet, it was clearly Chinese food, yet really different and special. For wine, we opted for a French Bordeaux by the glass. At 18 Euro per glass this was expensive by comparison to other restaurants we'd eaten at in Italy. However, this was well worth the cost, as the wine was truly superior. The grilled pork dumplings were our appetizer. These were the closest to what we are used to, but they were really something exceptional in taste. The next three dishes were all variations on roast pork lo mein, seafood fried rice, and kung po chicken. However the resemblance was only slight in both appearances, which were amazing, as well as the taste - all three were incredibly tasty. All these dishes were also different from what we are accustomed to, as they were small portions. The fact these were small portions though left us room for dessert. We often skip dessert. We find that desserts often are nothing special and do not measure up to what came before, even in the best of the best restaurants. Here though, the desserts seemed unusual, interesting, and tempting. The dessert we chose was enough for two. This was a little surprising when the other courses were on the small side. We had the saffron foam, mascarpon cream, gianduia, nut crumble and saffron granita specialty, which comes to the table looking like you're eating a framed painting. This was spectacular and really memorable. So, if you're in Milan and want something different, Gong is a place not to be missed. It is located right off the Tricolore station plaza.
