I have 3 real estate loans with HSBC, which requires my loans are paid thru an HSBC checking account. Because of the size of my loans and monies deposited in my checking account, I am considered a 'Premier Client', which, as it turns out, means NOTHING! ALL of my dealings with HSBC are fraught with anxiety and fear as there is NO personalized or premier treatment of my and my accounts. The only time I hear from them is when they are trying to sell me something. Whenever problems arise, even ones created by them, it is a complete nightmare to resolve. Based on my experience, it seems you would have to be a very high net worth client (above $20 million) n order to get any sort of decent and professional treatment. I do not trust that they will take care of me, nor that they have my best interest at the forefront of their mission. Hence, why I get so anxious and stressed when an issue arises. Horrible customer service! The lady at the first box started asking me personal questions in the middle of the bank at loud with no respect of my privacy at all. She never invited me to sit and I was holding my toddler in my arms. So I asked her to sit, she asked 2-3 more questions and I decided that was time for me to leave. If this is the way you treat potentially new customers, I don't want to imagine once you have me as one. I came with the intention of opening two accounts and transferring the money from another bank, but with this horrible experience I'm taking my money somewhere else. Be careful of this place! I tried to close my account and the teller simply gave me my money and the account was down to $0. I saw my online banking and was assessed a $15 fee. I called HSBC, and the banker claimed to close the account and reversed the fee. 2 months later, I chatted with an agent on hsbc.com because I saw my account was still open with -$30 for 2 months of fees. They told me they'd close the account. I called mid-next week and asked a banker if they had any idea about the closure. They did not!!!!!! Now, that banker told me they made it official, it was closed and a letter would be set to my address in 3-5 business days. Looking at my online banking now (day 1), it is *still* open. Withholds information! Bad customer service! Seems like no one wants to help unless you can make them a lot of commission. They also don't tell you about the basic account. I asked them for account info and they gave me all this info for $15k or up accounts. After they were done trying to upsell me I asked about their $2k bank account, which they pretended they didnt have bc i asked for the lowest amount account they have and they didnt tell me about that option. Only then did they tell me info on the 2k account. This place is NOT trustworthy!!! DONT GO HERE! If you insist on going with HSBC, go to the Daly City branch. read more

This has been truly one of the worst banking relationships that I have had. Recently, all I needed to do was pay off a mortgage, which you assume would be a rather simple process, no? Instead of being able to give me a final number, and allow me to write a check, they kept me on the line for 45 minutes and stated (incorrectly) that paying off some of my principal could only be done via a wire. After closing my account with HSBC, I plan to never use any of their services again. read more

I recently made a trust and want to put my assets into it. At Menlo Federal Credit Union, it took less than 5 minutes. It was a different story at HSBC. I tried to call them because it's a long drive from my house, but the only number I was able to call (the one on my bank statement) put me on hold for 10 minutes. A woman who barely spoke English finally answered and managed to communicate to me that it was the national office and she couldn't connect me to the Millbrae office and she couldn't give me their number. I drove down to the bank and was told that the person who does things like that wasn't in. The manager wasn't in either. What a waste of my time. read more

I opened a checking account here because they had a $300 promotion going on. During the 3 month I was here, I visited the branch 3 times, first time to open the account and was met by a male associate who could care less. The second time I stood in the teller line for a good 10~15 min before the only teller working finished his private Cantonese conversation with his friend. They carried on like two friends having a nice chitchat at a Starbucks. The third time I came in to close my account, only to find out that the branch closed at 4 pm on a Monday. read more

Crap customer service which is advertised as "World Class". The people in the branch are actually OK, but the corporation is crap. I opened a new checking account and credit card and they gave me three blank checks. Whoopee. I came by tonight and the ATM is closed, is that world-class customer service? When you call their customer service telephone getting someone on the line who can speak English is almost impossible. When I called tonight I just got a recording saying call back tomorrow. When I first joined this bank, I was really happy. There weren't the long lines that I had experienced at Chase and the tellers seemed very friendly and helpful. However, over the past year my experience at HSBC , and particularly this branch, has gone rapidly downhill. I'm not sure if it is plain incompetency or something else, but this year they have shut down my ATM card once (which caused quite a problem while out at night and not able to contact them) and charged exorbitant charges even though there was money in the account. It is this branch in particular that has done this. I've spent a lot of time on the phone with them (corporate couldn't do anything to help because it was the branch itself) and yet the mistakes keep coming. I am a very busy person and do not have time to deal with a bank that doesn't know what it's doing. I'm still an HSBC customer but I am going to change banks as soon as I can. It's a little bittersweet because I liked them so much when I first came there. It's also too bad for them because I'm at the point in my life where they probably could've done well with a customer like me. I still say the tellers are friendly and helpful. It's the competency that I question. read more

I went there last week to open an account. One of their male manager was really nice.

In October 2016, I received a promotional offer via a postcard in the mail. The offer was for $375 if I completed qualifying activities after opening an HSBC checking account. The qualifying activities I chose to perform was to complete two bill pays per month using the account, for the first three consecutive months or 90 days. Then, I would receive the $375 within 8 weeks after the 90 days. So I visited this branch on October 27, and was greeted by a very courteous young man. This was the only positive part of my experience. I told him that I was here to open a checking account and he set up with a banker. I showed the banker the postcard with the offer. She proceeded to help me open my account, but I could tell she did not really care. She was just trying to get me out quickly and did not explain details of the account and the promotion requirements until I asked. When I did ask questions, she was not too delighted. Ended up opening the account, depositing some money, and went home. I completed bills pays on 11/09, 11/14 for my first month (10/27-11/26). Then, two more bill pays on 11/30, 11/30 for the second month (11/27-12/26). Finally, two more bill pays on 12/28 and 1/03 for the third month (12/27-1/26). Then, I waited for my bonus. Eight weeks pass, the end of March comes along, and I still have yet to receive my bonus, so I visit the branch. A banker looks into my account, and tells me to go home and wait one more month. End of April comes along, and I still did not receive the bonus, so I re-visit the branch. The same banker looks into my account again and tells me that HSBC will do an "investigation", and that someone will call me in 1-2 business days. One week later, I receive a call from him saying that I did not get my bonus because I did not complete the qualifying activities. Already frustrated, I inquired about how I did not qualify because I know I completed two bill pays every month for the first three consecutive months. He said I did not complete two bill pays for December and January because they go by calendar months, and not by when I opened my account. At this point, I was furious because the fine print of the promotion did not say "calendar months". It said "three months or 90 days of account opening". He advised me to call HSBC customer service. Long story short, I called customer service, wasting over an hour my time trying to make my case to a representative who then got into a heated conversation with me and ultimately forcing me to request a supervisor to help me file an "appeal". Then, I had to wait some more for the outcome of the appeal. During this time, I was filing a consumer complaint with the Federal Reserve. A month later (end of May), I finally receive my bonus. As you can imagine, I closed my account shortly after. Most HSBC employees at this branch do not care about customer service unless you are bringing with you a lot of money. HSBC will also try to scam you out of your deserved promotions and bonuses unless you fight back. My word of advice is to stay far far away from this bank. No bonus they are willing to give is worth the trouble you are going to get. read more

I opened a personal account at the branch not long ago. The customer service lady was really nice, but later I found out this bank charges everything you ask for, even just a reprinted receipt. A lady who works behind at the tellers counter, think she is the supervisor of tellers, bad attitude. I will switch my account even it is very closed to my new place. read more

They don't know how to do their job. They have no knowledge of their own bank policy and system. It is a waste of time to bank over there. They will keep calling you every week and ask for your more information for your account after you have left the branch as they didn't know how to do their work the first time when you were there. And you end up wasting your time to help them out each time they call you, instead of they helping you as a customer. read more

Absolutely the very worst. I went to open an account and they told me I needed an appointment to open an account. I should have taken that as a hint of what was to come. They are closed on Saturday, their technical and fraud customer support is Eastern Time so they have all gone home before 3 PM PST. Their help desk is located overseas which doesn't have to be a bad thing however I have been on the phone for over 1 hour and 23 minutes now and they still can't figure out why I have over $1700 in my checking account but I'm getting insufficient fund errors for 2 checks totaling less than $75, combined. read more

I opened an account. The customer service lady has a very bad attitude. She treated you as giving her "additional unnecessary work" if you do not speak Cantonese and do not appear to be a rich Chinese investor. When it is done, she simply said "you are set" that is, no "thank you for your business" or "see you again" or some nice parting words to the client. Instead, she just turned to her computer and as if to say "get out now, I am busy." To be fair, an initial customer service man that I contacted has more client PR sense and more professional attitude. Unfortunately, he is too busy and refers this utterly unprofessional customer service lady to me. I read some of the reviews of their HSBC branch in New York. There the customer service ladies are even worst. Some said the customer service ladies think they are doing you a favor, not a service, by signing you up. However if you speak Cantonese, and have millions of dollar from Shanghai or Hong Kong to invest, you will be treated like a real person. In fact, one reviewer said the HSBC bank in the New York branch treats you "like an animal." I won't go so far as to say that is the case with the Millbrae branch, but it is close enough based on my fortunate encounter with this unprofessional customer service lady in the Millbrae branch. read more
